Our charming garden cottage is located in the heart of Berkeley's historic McGee-Spaulding district. It is the perfect place to unwind as it is safe, quiet, and tranquil, yet only a few minutes by foot to downtown Berkeley and the UC Berkeley campus.
The Goldfinch Cabin is nestled behind The Green Dragon. Home to the Dragon's Eye Commune in the 1960's and 70's, the houses remained communal for about 40 years. Michael Rossman, a leader of the Free Speech Movement, was one of the early members.
Known since the '70's as the "Dragon's Eye" and more recently as the "Green Dragon" this property has turn of the century charm with lots of interesting architectural details and Berkeley character.
The winsome, one-bedroom Goldfinch Cottage is situated in our backyard garden, sleeps 2-4 people, has a full kitchen, living room, full bath, 2 small decks, and lots of warmth. It is ideal for 1-2 adults or a couple with 1-2 kids. The bedroom has a queen size bed. There is a foldout couch in the living room that can fit 1 adult or 2 kids. The cottage has radiant heat under the floor, cable TV, wifi, and laundry facilities.
Depending on the time of year, there may be plums, figs, strawberries, raspberries, or other delights growing in the garden and waiting to be eaten. Oh and hummingbirds!
Perfectly situated in central Berkeley, we are a 6-7 minute walk to BART, downtown Berkeley, Trader Joe's, movies, BAM/PFA, and many multiple star restaurants Comal, Gather, Ippiku, Corso, to name a few.
No smoking, be respectful of neighbors, and most importantly...make yourself at home!
The Goldfinch Cabin is a sweet retreat in Berkeley. It's in a safe residential area and is an easy walk to public transit, coffee shops, grocery stores, and restaurants. We took BART to the airport which was easy.
The cabin is in a beautiful yard with lemon and fig trees and the light in the space is amazing! Bed was super cozy and comfortable, water pressure in the shower was awesome. The kitchen has everything (more than everything, actually) that you'd need to make meals-we had breakfast at home every morning.
Anne and Chris were available to answer questions-our interactions were fun even though we never met in person. There was coffee, fruit, and oatmeal waiting for us when we arrived.
The Goldfinch was truly a home away from home. As I said to Anne, I kind of want to live there! Oh, and I did see a hummingbird the first morning that I was there, which was a treat!
Many thanks, Anne and Chris. We'll be back!
It is a really beautiful cabin, which can fit about 4 people. It's very quiet, and we had a grate time in the cabin. Anne and Chris are very nice.
This was a fantastic location for a relaxed week in the Bay Area. The cottage was clean, comfortable, and exactly what we were looking for. The hosts were attentive and welcoming, yet gave us plenty of privacy. I highly recommend the Goldfinch Cabin for anyone looking for a home-away-from-home in a quiet suburban setting just steps from downtown Berkeley and a short commute to other surrounding areas.
A beautiful, clean, quiet, comfortable, private garden cottage just a few blocks from downtown Berkeley. Hosts are lovely people - friendly, responsive and helpful.
Our hosts were caring, responsive, and yet respected our privacy. A wonderful combination.
Maybe the best place to stay in Berkeley. Excellent location, well equipped and super-friendly hosts. Recommended!
I have mid-western roots and California branches, and my background includes cooking, gardening, renovating, sewing, designing, calculating, photographing, painting, and mothering. We love sharing our cottage, which has a lot of warm character and Berkeley history, with travelers young and old.
