About this listing

This sunny, cheerful, and calm room is nestled in a quiet countryside-like setting minutes away from Yosemite-like hiking trails, yet it's in the middle of Silicon Valley.

The space

I offer a private serene room in a beautiful house in Silicon Valley. The room comes with a shared bathroom with tub and shower and lots of free street parking.

There is a family room and a fire place to hang out, as well as a relaxing patio and two decks for enjoyable outside seating. I am an easy going, open-minded, well-traveled person, who enjoys good company and conversations.

The house is in a quiet neighborhood in Emerald Hills. Restaurant and shops are within 2-10 minutes driving distance. I offer free wireless internet, a library with TV, and coffee or tea if needed. Please don't expect absolute perfection though, because the price reflects what expectations should be. The hotel room prices in this area are $165 per night for a single room for three-star accommodations.

I love eating out and have lots of good recommendations for ethnic restaurants on the peninsula as well as in San Francisco.

There is easy access to 280 and 101 and you are within minutes in Palo Alto/Stanford. San Francisco is a 35 - 40 minute ride by car depending on traffic. SFO is 25 minutes away and there is Caltrain access

Guest access

Guests are welcome to ask me for anything they need. I'm the kind of person who has just about everything on hand - my mother always said I should open a neighborhood store! But for my Airbnb guests, I won't charge anything of course.
Obviously, as well, absolutely everything that a top hotel would provide, like comb, razor, toothbrush and toothpaste, sewing kit (am I missing anything?) will be provided, just ask.

Laundry is $5 per load

I was considering how to write this review because I have been very disappointed in both Airbnb Help team and this host. I have rated individual issues during the rating process (please check it out too). Bit of a background I was there to work on my startup with an accelerator programme I was part of in Redwood City, I am originally from London England so had no idea of the area, local rates and things and distances. Here are some factual points that I will raise serious alarm bells about, now that I have had a few days to recover from the stress, bullying and aggravation this property host and host manager had caused me. 1.) I paid for a large room advertised, which was equivalent to $1506 but instead got charged £1506 - on any given day that is almost $800+ higher than what I should have been charged. To add to this, I wasn't even living in this room that I paid for, instead, I was shipped in a much smaller, darker room that had very poor wifi connectivity because the original room did not have curtains, opened on the deck and had no locks, all the wardrobes and drawers in all rooms were full of stuff so no space to store anything for 1 month's trip. 2.) Cleanliness - the place was advertised as a clean home with weekly on-site cleaning by the host manager (Marc); the reality was quite the opposite, it was not clean at all. The rooms were dusty to a point where I could draw things on it, unfortunatley due to my allergies I could not sleep for the first few nights in the room. The kitchen had and still does have tonns of old food with bugs in them, tonns of women stuff all over the kitchen. And food from 2008 or older; the place stank, the floors in kitchen and wooden floors were sticky and mucky. The carpets in the room, stairs etc were full of dust and smothering. I had to alongside other housemates take pictures and send it to the host (Maylen) and Airbnb to raise the concerns. At this point Maylen was very aggressive, she bullied me into saying that as I raised these health & safety concerns that I was stressing her and sent me several abusive and aggressive messages here and on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN), where I had to block her and repeatedly request to not contact me. The reality is - as a host she should have been ashamed at the state of the property & should have been apologetic not bullying. 3.) Wifi - if you are working or need any form of entertainment; forget it. The wifi at first broke every 2 days; then they decided to change their box and it did not work for me mostly, at all. So during my last week's stay I was almost in tears because I had to go to an office to work on a Saturday...

This is a great room in a great location! The room is very nice and private! I opened the sliding door every night so I could hear the sounds of the woods and feel the breeze, it is very calming! Maylen is very sweet and accommodating! Highly recommend!

I very much enjoyed my stay here. The room was very comfortable and offered a high degree of solitude which is just what I was looking for. Nice big deck off of the room was a plus! Maylen and Mark were both very gracious hosts and interesting to talk to but never imposed. Great little Mexican restaurant just up the hill! I will definitely come to stay again. six stars!

Maylen is a very cool and attentive person who is great to talk to. She responded very fast to my request and I was happy that I could stay at her place a few hours after she accepted. The house is in a very nice and quiet area in Redwood city about one hour walk to the main Camino Real Boulevard. There is a grocery store nearby with a couple of restaurants.

Big and private bedroom. Full use of kitchen. Even though sometimes was difficult to reach out to Maylen because she was out, she has been always kind, communicative and willing to help. Sometimes house was a bit overcrowded, and could be a bit noisy, specially being downstairs and hearing steps above, but most of the time it was quiet

The neighborhood is pretty and quiet, up in the hills above Palo Alto. The home is a nice, roomy mid century craftsman? Once I got to meet my hostess, on my second of two nights, I found her warm, accomadating and lovely. But before that difficult to reach. I understand she is very busy with studies...but, no I had no sense of welcoming.
