If you love tasting the raw beauty of Bali's greenery, are looking for an experience of the unusual, and get off on the amazing architecture that can be found on the islands of the Gods, then Sun Moon Villa is the place!
Sun Moon Villa is like the love-child of Gaudi and Hundertwasser - an open air affair with curved walls, open stair cases, massive high ceilings, a moon themed cave-room with countless glass doors opening up to the bamboo wilderness close enough to touch. The kitchen does not feature a single straight wall with an open Escheresque stairway leading to the upstairs Sun Room, which is set under a towering pyramid roof looking out into the bamboo framed jungle and river some 60 feet below.
Nothing at Sun Moon can be described as the usual or normal which makes it a great place to stay even just for the experience of it, let alone longer term (if you can get in that is).
Tucked away behind a family compound of the friendliest of locals, the villa is perched on 6 are of land right at the edge of the jungle only a few minutes from Alchemy Raw Cafe, sought after Secret Panestanan, Bintang Supermarket and only a 5 minute scooter ride from down town Ubud.
The villa is rarely vacant and sought by many; loved by all that have stayed there (well almost all - it is unique and not everyone's cup of tea) making a stint here surely a highlight of your stay in Ubud.
So, what do you get for your money... well, there is the large open bed and living room known as Sun room overlooking the jungle upstairs (it does not close or lock but has a lockable cupboard) plus the downstairs cave-like Moon room etched out of the wall of the cliff (this room is lockable and is super safe). The villa was not designed for families with young children or elderly as the stairs and patios are open and without railing. It is set in a magical part of Ubud set right against the jungle in your private garden complete with it's own fish pond and Bale. Many animals have been sighted when sitting in the open air kitchen including monitor lizards, porcupines, monkeys (that luckily stay away from the house) squirrels and other large fuzzy things that I can not even identify plus bird life abounds... It is quiet, private and feels like being in another world and time...
To the luxuries... it has great water pressure and the temperature of the hot water is the best I have found in Bali (hence the large bathtub I had built), there is a comfy king size bed up-stairs with uninterrupted views from your pillow of magical mornings as the mist dances in the bamboo, a gas oven (even rarer than good water pressure), a full size round futon bed in the moon room, plus a cosy sleeping nook with the ceiling featuring an impressive slice of the moon's surface, the room tiers in layers to look out through four massive glass doors to capture the beauty of the location.
Every space has its own feel... from the lush gardens that frame the chairs and table near the Bale and fish pond, to the dining area boasting a massive teak slab table large enough seat 12 staged on yet another split-level above the open kitchen, which has endless bench space and a lockable pantry; the upstairs deck, the curved walk way to the moon room... the mood changes as you move around in the place
Living at Sun Moon Villa - even just for a few days will make your Bali experience memorable.
Ok, enough of the brag, Sun Moon is only available at the odd times when I am travelling for pleasure or work and when it has not already been snatched up by friends of friends or those on the pulse...
Sun Moon Villa is fully serviced. Our pembantu comes five times per week (more if you like at extra cost) to clean, make beds, cook (western or Indonesian) run errands, shop and get you anything from a scooter hired, a driver or fresh coconuts, to getting your laundry done and a massage book at home... just ask.
The rate includes power and fast wifi, drinking water and the villa comes with linen and towels supplied. Just bring yourself, an open heart and mind and your bag of clothes...
If you love to write, paint, meditate, dance, do yoga, write songs or simply chill out, Sun Moon Villa is sure to inspire you like you won't believe...
I look forward to hosting you in my beloved paradise Sun Moon Villa.

A total gem - our stay at Sun Moon Villa was awesome - it is a slice of heaven in Bali, tucked away from bustle of Ubud in the welcoming community of Pennestaan. The villa was more than we expected, our hosts had provided everything for our needs and were on hand via email should we need anything else. The tranquility, quiet and magic of this special place with its extraordinary interior design rubbed off on us and provided five days of unutterable bliss to relax our minds and bodies. We didn't want to leave and know we will be back.
"Cassie was so wonderful to deal with, giving us lots of information about the property and about the surrounding village area, great cafes and walks to do etc. The house is so unique and a real treat to stay in, a true Bali jungle experience. We loved seeing the moon shining brightly at night, and listening to the sounds of the night jungle around the property. It was very peaceful and super relaxing. Plus, a great shower, seriously good water pressure!"
Sun and moon villa is a unique and fabulous place to stay. The villa is nestled in the jungle so you have a lovely feeling of being surrounded by the sounds of nature and the vibrant animal life within it. There are many nooks to chill in, a great deck area for sunset yoga and a Gaudi-esk feel to the place. Awesome bathroom with large bath and great water pressure.
Cassie is a warm, friendly host who was ever so helpful. We would certainly recommended sun and moon villa to anyone looking for a more unique villa experience. In short we loved it.
