The Space

Step out of the hustle and bustle of your real life - and straight into a fairytale - with a stay at the enchanting ‘Underhill’ house.

Underhill is part of Canopy Camping Escapes collection of unique and beautiful glamping sites around New Zealand.

Set on a Waikato farm, and built into a hillside, this remarkable hobbit-style house has been beautifully hand crafted with rustic native timbers and ironwork. Created over 15 years ago, it has remained a closely guarded family secret - until now.

Underhill is the perfect romantic retreat for couples. Huge timber doors open wide to overlook a picturesque pond and farmland beyond. You’ll enjoy the warmth and ambience of an old coal range... the soft glow of candlelight... a glass of wine on a seat by the pond, under the stars. Or just snuggle into the luxurious, specially shaped bed - with pure cotton linen, comfy pillows and thick, wool duvet.

A second small earth hut, contains a private bathroom with steaming hot shower and wash basin, and a small building just outside accommodates a clean and pleasant-to-use composting toilet.

Underhill is power-free, with all cooking done on either the coal range or the outside BBQ.

For those really wanting to relax, full and part catering can be supplied on request.

Underhill is a truly special place to unwind, switch off and reconnect. So... treat yourself. Immerse yourself in the stillness and peace of Underhill Valley and take some time to fully enjoy life’s simple pleasures.

  • I won't even try to describe how wonderful, magical, beautiful, and amazing this place is because honestly, there are no words. You really just have to experience it for yourself.

I would like to talk about the amenities though, since that was my one concern about ataying here and because they were so far above and beyond what we were expecting. We really thought we'd be "roughing it" the night we stayed at Underhill, but other than the fact that there's no electricity, it's really got everything you need! The kitchen was really well stocked with cooking essentials our hosts had even saved us some fresh eggs and milk in a cooler. They have gorgeous dishes to use and all the cooking utensils you'd possibly need. The bathroom (or "bath cave" as they call it) was amazing. It basically feels like a little mini spa, and they had plenty of clean towels for us to use, and even some nice soap. And finally, the bed. OMG the bed! This may have been the best night's sleep I had the entire week we traveled around New Zealand. We'd been getting a little chilly at nights and were slightly concerned about it here since the place is so open. But the bed is super cozy and is piled with fur pillows and blankets. It was super warm and felt so luxurious!

I could seriously go on and on about this place. Suffice to say if you are even considering staying here don't hesitate to do it! Even if youre like us and not normally into camping or cabin-type places. You won't regret it and it will be one of your best memories of New Zealand. At least it is for us :)

Director of Canopy Camping Escapes
I am an at-home mother of two children (Charlie, four and Henrietta, two) with a background in marketing and communications. I am also one of the Directors of New Zealand company, Canopy Camping Escapes. Canopy Camping Escapes is a new company, setting up a network of 'glamping' or glamourous camping sites on private land around New Zealand. So far, we have three 'glampsites' that we help manage and market on behalf of their owners. Kawakawa Station in the South Wairarapa, Underhill Earth House, set on a beautiful Waikato farm, and finally Hurunui Jacks near Hokitika on the West Coast. The campsite at Kawakawa Station is hosted by Alex and Christine Furniss who are the farmers that own the amazing 2,000 acre property. Underhill Earth House is owned and hosted by owners, Jessie and Craig Moon and Jessie's mum, Colleen. The luxury tent at Hurunui Jacks is owned and run by Maureen Cook and John Plows. In all cases, our hosts are lovely people who will do their utmost to make sure you have a fantastic stay. We believe that glamping in New Zealand will give both domestic and international visitors a great opportunity to get off the beaten track and explore some of New Zealand's most beautiful and secluded spots. We hope you do too!
