Tommy Bit is our shepherd's hut for 2 in Borrowdale, the heart of the Lake District. Enjoy fantastic views, cook up a meal on the campfire or curl up on the sofa in front of the wood burning stove. Fabulous walks from the hut to the lake and fells.

The Space

Tommy Bit is our cosy, traditionally styled shepherd's hut in Borrowdale, the English Lake District, which is nestled at the foot of the fells with wonderful valley and woodland views. Shower and toilet facilities are in our barn about 40m away. Glamping at its best!

Keep snug in the winter with Tommy Bit's wood burning stove, or cook outside in the summer on the fire pit. Relax after a day exploring the Lakes in our wood fired outdoor hot tub (£25 for exclusive use for a day, please book in advance).

We provide tea & coffee and Tommy Bit has a kettle, toaster, microwave and fridge inside and a fire pit outside for you to cook up an outdoor storm! Or you can try one of the local hotels for dinner.

Tommy Bit has a fold down small double bed (4ft wide instead of 4ft 6), which folds away, fully made up, into a sofa in the day. There is a folding table with stools inside as well as outdoor table and chairs. In case of rain, a tarpaulin can be suspended from wires above the outdoor area.

There is a shared room nearby with washer, drier, lots of tourist information and puzzles and games that you can take back to the hut. We also provide all our guests with our 'walks from the door' which we have written ourselves: 12 walks of varying lengths that you can enjoy straight out of the gate.

Guest Access

Guests have their own parking space and exclusive use of the hut and outside area, with table and chairs. They are welcome to explore our small wooded fell side behind the studio. They nearly always have exclusive use of the nearby shower room (it is very occasionally shared). They have access to a shared utility room with washer, drier, extra tourist information, games, puzzles, books and portable bbq.

Interaction with Guests

Our family have lived at Manesty, a traditional Lakeland farmstead in Borrowdale, for nearly 200 years and have a long history of welcoming visitors to share our beautiful part of the world. We live in the house near the original farmstead built by Alan's father and grandfather and let the original farmhouse and converted barns as holiday cottages. Tommy Bit is nestled in at the bottom of our wood half way between our house and cottages. We're here to help you get the best out of your stay if you want and are always happy to offer advice.

The Neighborhood

Manesty is less than a mile from the Derwentwater lakeshore and about the same distance from the pretty village of Grange, with its teashops and double hump-backed bridge over the River Derwent. The 'Honister Ramber' bus takes you the 5 miles into Keswick (which has the nearest shops) from the doorstep between Easter and November, or the launch runs all-year round, as does a bus from Grange.

We're in a perfect location for walks, water sports, touring the villages, or just sitting back to relax! We're at the foot of Catbells, which is well known as the Lake's favourite beginner's fellwalk, but there are also challenging day hikes up Scafell (the highest mountain in England) or relaxing rambles by the lake or in the woods.

Getting around

From Easter to October a bus (77 and 77A, the 'Honister (website hidden)') goes from Manesty's front gate to Keswick. All year round the 78 goes to Keswick from Grange, less than a mile away and there is also a boat, the 'Keswick Launch' which picks up from High Brandlehow and Lodore landing stages, both less than a mile from Manesty.
From Keswick, there is a bus to our nearest railway station Penrith which is well served by high speed trains (less than 3 hours to London).

  • Wow! Such a beautiful little getaway destination! We stayed for three nights and enjoyed every minute! The location is great, the hut is gorgeous and the hosts are lovely! The hut is small, as expected, but has everything you (website hidden) on the fire pit added a bit more fun to the experience! We rented the hot tub for one night and it was well worth it! My boyfriend had to manage the fire in the tub for a few hours beforehand but it got wonderful and hot! The bed folded down from the wall and was really comfortable. All in all a great little place! We would definitely go back!

  • Great stay in the Lake District. Alan and Cheryl were great hosts and talked us through the local activities and recommended some lovely spots for lunch and dinner. We saw so much wildlife and luckily managed to see some baby owls who lived behind the shepard's hut. Just behind there is the start of a great trail up to Cat Bells and some of the best views around the Lake District. The shepard's hut is spotless and so well looked after, with everything you need. Thank you

  • Alan and Cheryl were great hosts and made our stay super pleasant.
The hut was everything we hoped it to be, with cozy little fireplace and proper wood. Everything you would possibly need to feel comfy and beyond was there. The information about walks/hikes/tours/food/attractions provided by the hosts was absolutely spot on and overwhelming at times since the choices are so so diverse.
The area is absolutely beautiful so there is really not much I can say except that this trip was everything we hoped for and much more. If only there was more time..

  • We were very lucky to find this lovely place to stay in such an amazing area. Our initial worries of this being quiet a small cabin were quashed with our stay. Really nice facilities brilliant friendly atmosphere and we felt very welcome and looked after with lots of help with local knowledge. There are so many amazing walks from the door that we wish we had stayed longer than three days and hope to come back to complete the walks we wanted too. We also had an amazing time in the hot tub that even the rain failed to dampen our spirits;). Really recommend such a great opportunity

  • This Shepherd's Hut is fantastic!! Everything about it - the view is to die for - we will never forget waking up and lying in bed looking out over the valley with nothing but green hills and blue sky. It was wonderful having amazing BBQs outside the hut - everything is provided. The hut is very comfy and comes with great facilities, especially the bed and super warm duvet, the little wood burner and the tiniest but fully functioning kitchen I have ever seen! The hosts were great - they got back to us very quickly with answers to any queries we had, and made sure we had a plentiful supply of wood for BBQs. If you are looking for a unique but comfortable holiday in the Lakes then look no further.

  • What an awesome place! Although it was not as large as we thought, we loved it.

My rating to the host 10/10.

  • Had a fabulous stay at Tommy Bit this weekend - Alice, Alan and Cheryl were all lovely and so helpful - particularly Alice who helped us get organised with a taxi into town! The Shepherd's hut is so adorable - perfect for a long weekend break and super cosy! The Hot Tub is a must - worth every minute refilling with fire wood.

We took a stroll out along Catbells Terrace and round to the Swinside Inn using some of the suggested walks provided by Alan & family - the pub is well worth the leisurely walk - roaring open fire and home cooked meals!

We also did a brewery tour at the Keswick Brewing Co in town - it was a nice activity for anyone interested in the brewing process or craft ale in general.

  • We spent a fantastic 3 nights at the Shepherd's hut. We were greeted on arrival by Alice, who was extremely welcoming & full of helpful information. The hut itself is really cosy, clean & equipped with everything we needed for our stay, including information/maps for various walks. I thought the '12 walks from the door' put together by the hosts were fantastic. Each walk gives a duration, terrain type & difficulty rating + a map. We managed to do 3 of these during our time at the lakes. We also hired the hot tub for 2 nights of our stay. This was a perfect way to relax after a long day of hiking. It was lovely sitting in the tub amongst the trees listening to the owls hooting above!
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay & completely fell in love with the Lake District. We have already discussed planning another visit soon!

Alan's family has lived at Manesty, in Borrowdale, for nearly 200 years. Our children (now grown up) are the sixth generation to have lived here. Our family has a long history of welcoming visitors to this magical part of Borrowdale and we are proud to continue the tradition of sharing our beautiful little corner of England. If you want, we're able to provide you with a wealth of local information and tips. Our 'walks from the door' is just one way that we try to make sure you get the most from your Lake District holiday. We live next door so we're always on hand to answer questions, help you book activities and recommend things to do but far enough away though that you don't need to see us if you don't want to. We're really proud of our cottages and glamping accommodation and love our area. We hope to welcome you soon!
