About this listing
This rustic, antique Javanese wood house is a part of Casa Serenita and shares a large kitchen/dining/living space and a 11-meter-long pool (and two cats) with one other bedroom. A rare opportunity to experience cozy quietness in large open space.
This is a part of our villa, Casa Serenitá (please see https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/945721 for the listing of the villa). An antique Javanese wood house transported from Java, it is full of rustic charm with modern comfort.
The villa is located in the popular Nyuh Kuning village, just south of Ubud, a mere 15 minute walk through Monkey Forest. It is built on 18-are (20,000 square feet) overlooking a small river valley and terraced rice fields. Despite the closeness to central Ubud, the property is secluded and serene. No sound of passing vehicles can be heard - all you hear are birds, frogs, ghekkos and the gentle streaming of the river below - thus we named it Casa Serenitá, House of Serenity.
The villa is comprised of four buildings: Master bedroom with half outdoor bathroom (bathtub, rain shower, and two sinks); Second bedroom is a Gladak—an antique Javanese wood house transported from Java—that has a private half outdoor bathroom (shower only) and a porch with a view; Complete kitchen/dining/living space that is large enough to accommodate small group yoga or other gatherings; traditional Balinese-style gazebo in which to sit and relax.
There is a 2.5m x 11m swimming pool in the garden.
The house is maintained and managed by a friendly staff from the village - a full-time gardener, a night-time security, a part-time house caretaker/cook, and a manager who can assist you in any aspect during your stay.
The villa was built with one thing in mind - harmony and integration with nature. The design is traditional and authentic Balinese bale style architecture, completely open to and part of the beauty of the surrounding nature. It does not aim to be super-deluxe or unnecessarily luxurious. Rather, it is a down-to-earth, simple and comfortable nest for those who want to be as close to nature as one possibly can be, while still enjoying all the modern comfort and convenience in total tranquility. This is a perfect space for a writer's retreat, meditation, yoga and other spiritual/inner work, or just to unwind and relax.
There are two cats that live on the property, Winston (aka Ton-Ton) and Winona (aka Nona). They are friendly and cuddly, and roam freely on the land. They are taken care of by our staff and there is nothing you need to do, but if you have severe cat allergy, maybe it is not a good idea to stay here.
The price indicated is for the Gladak with full use of the kitchen/dining/living space and the pool, and includes breakfast for two. Airport pickup/drop-off is available for US$30 one way.
As a rule of thumb, check-in is at 15:00 and check-out at 11:00. This is, however, flexible depending on the bookings before/after, so please contact me if it needs to be altered.
Please feel free to contact me for any questions.

We loved staying in the villa, we felt very welcome. There was another couple staying at the place for one of the nights we were there, the rest of the time we had the place to our selves. The villa is a great little jungle getaway. The staff were so lovely and were very helpful with us organising to get around the area.
The villa is a little tricky to find on your own or at night as it is tucked away, a torch was handy.
We had a very nice stay in this authentic place.
People working there were very kind, Desah cooks delicious (indonesian) breakfast every morning.
The view is amazing, the place is quiet, we really felt good there.
The bungalow is a bit rustic but very cute and charming (we loved the bathroom!)
Nuyh Kunning is a bit far from ubud (and this was perfect for us) so it is better to rent a scotter to discover the surroundings
I would definitely recommand this place !
This is a beautiful oasis of a place. I real surprise find and so beautiful and peaceful. Situated south of central Ubud where it quieter and more tranquil but still has restaurants and amenities locally. The staff were lovely and we had great traditional Balinese breakfasts every morning. The swimming pool is stunning and room is cosy and clean. Highly recommend.
We spent 6 wonderful nights at the Charming Gladak and we're glad we chose this secluded spot. We loved being away from the hustle and bustle, the lap pool was divine, the gladak comfortable but I think of all the delights the highlight was Desa's delicious breakfasts!
We arrived in Bali in the evening and were met at the airport by driver Kudek. This was essential as it would be difficult for anyone not familiar to find the address especially at night.
Thanks Desa, Kudek and Ketuk for a lovely stay : )
We enjoyed our stay in the Gladek, there is a beautiful view down to the river, where you would hear the children come to swim and play in the morning. The staff, Kadek (manager) , Desak who is a wonderful chef and Ketut ( security ) and gardener, who keeps the surrounds looking lovely, went out of their way to make sure we had a lovely time, they are all very welcoming.
The property is well situated and very easy to walk to Ubud or to the local Restaurants in the village. The village of Nyuh Kuning is an absolute delight .z
I stayed in Naokos gladak for a week -but wish it would have been a month!
A beautiful place.
Desak prepares a great breakfast in the morning and Ketut is doing everything to make you feel comfortable.
Thank you both!
Amazing place! Can't recommend it highly enough. Not a sound to be heard that is not from nature, a great kitchen and living area under a high thatched roof, beautiful outdoor shower, stunning infinity pool that looks out onto the jungle, and really lovely staff... What more can one ask for?!

About the Host, Naoko
Hi, I am Naoko, the owner of Casa Serenitá.
I am a book translator and I divide my time between Tokyo, Bali and Seattle. My love affair with Bali started back in 1990. I have returned for visits over the years and built relationship with this very special village, Nyuh Kuning, just south of Ubud. In 2012, after 10 years of planning, a house was finally built on a very special, secluded piece of land overlooking the river.
I am unable to live in Bali all year round, and therefore, offer this house for visitors while I am not there. Hope you will come and stay - and enjoy the beauty of old-style Bali in the serenity.
