Charming Mission/Bernal Studio

Apartment - Entire home/apt · Alabama Street, San Francisco, CA 94110, United States

Located in Bernal Heights--SF's most popular neighborhood--this cozy studio-like suite is ideal for independent travelers who enjoy quiet and privacy. You have your own entrance, kitchen basics for light meals, and bathroom with clawfoot tub.

The Space

This bright and comfy suite features:

• A queen sized bed with new Sealy mattress, quality linens and down alternative pillows and comforter

• A private entrance from the street and through the garage (Not much curb appeal, but you won’t walk through someone else’s living space as you come and go)

• A private bathroom with a clawfoot tub

• An improvised "kitchenette" for light meals with a mini-refrigerator/freezer, microwave oven, convection-toaster-broiler oven

• A radiator/space heater to warm up the room on those cooler San Francisco days

Guest Access

You have access to our washer and dryer in the garage. These are older appliances shared with the tenant on the 3rd floor, but they get the job done.

There is free wireless access for your laptop or tablet. There is NO TELEVISION, but you can stream media using your accounts with Netflix, Hulu, etc.

You are welcome to enjoy our warm Mission sunshine in the garden, just outside your room. Presently, the YARD IS IN ROUGH SHAPE, but we're working (slowly) on making it a bit nicer. We welcome cigarette smokers in the garden too, but please throw butts in the garbage.

Check-in is after 4:00 pm and check-out is at noon. Let us know when you are arriving and departing and we'll do our best to be flexible, store your bags, etc.

Interaction with Guests

I live in the separate flat upstairs and another tenant lives on the 3rd floor. Depending on our schedules you may rarely see me. But, I'm always a phone call, email or knock on the door away to give you any assistance, answer questions or offer directions or tips for sightseeing.

The Neighborhood

We are located on the border of the vibrant Mission District and charming Bernal Heights which was named the #1 hottest neighborhood in the country for 2014 (Redfin Research Center).

The neighborhood is reasonably safe, keeping in mind that no place is entirely safe. Anyone who is comfortable with urban living and street savvy will feel fine. That means watch where you are going. Don't walk around texting or talking on your cell phone. Never leave anything in your car. These safety guidelines are important in any neighborhood, in any city.

While parts of Mission Street can seem a bit gritty, look beyond and you'll find bucolic parks, tree lined streets with pretty Victorian homes, world-class mural art, and countless taquerias, bookstores, cafes, shops, bakeries and restaurants.

Getting around

Public transit will connect you anywhere in the city. There are several Muni bus stops within a block or two and the 24th Street BART stop is a 15 minute walk away, connecting you to downtown and either SFO or OAK airports.

The garage offers easy and safe parking for bikes if you bring one or choose to rent. The immediate neighborhood offers nice flat riding and your host can offer you tips on bike routes, bike safety (avoid theft) and taking your bike on MUNI.

We are just off the exits for highways 101 and 280. Street parking in this neighborhood is free (no meters, no permits needed). Parking is relatively easy compared to other parts of the city, but, there are times when you will need to drive around for 5-10 minutes before getting lucky. Watch out for signs telling you when parking is not allowed due to street sweeping or construction. Usually you can find a space on our block. If the space in front of our house is open, you may park there. IT IS OKAY TO BLOCK OUR DRIVEWAY, but do not park on the sidewalk. Keep in mind that usually a car is not needed or wanted for your sightseeing in San Francisco, since parking in other parts of the city can be impossible.

Check In
  • Shella is a very very great person. And the room was really nice and clean.
    See you again Shella :)

  • What a nice host. Great location and studio. One of the nicest places to stay in the city. Whenever I can I will stay there

  • Shella thinks of everything--after spending 2 weeks in her studio, I'd go back in a heartbeat!

After a long drive, I was able to stay in and rest because snacks, coffee/tea, towels, books and pamphlets about San Francisco, and much more were provided.

The bed was comfortable and noise minimal. The room was cozy and light, and the view out of the window gives you the feeling you're in the countryside with your very own green garden.

The separate entrance enables appreciated privacy. Shella leaves you alone unless you need something, and then she is quick about accommodating your requests.

Parking was a little tricky at times, but I was always able to find something.

Upon leaving, I felt fortunate that I'd found a little piece of affordable San Francisco heaven with an impressively kind and thoughtful host.

The words of a distinctive Kalifornian say it all. "I'll be back!"

    Response from Shella:

Colleen, It was a pleasure to host you. I hope the new baby and Mom and Dad are all doing well and that you will have a chance to visit them again soon. Take care, Shella

  • I was very happy with my stay here. The apartment is comfortable and hassle free, and I really liked the area. Don't miss the Precita Park Cafe, and I highly recommend climing up to the top of Bernal Heights for a great view of the whole city.

  • Great little apartment in good location. Close enough to walk to Mission district and fantastic coffee/food right at cool little restaurant across the road. Recommended!

  • Shella's Studio was amazing. It was everything that my girlfriend and I needed for our week long trip to San Francisco. The apartment had a lot of useful amenities (fridge, microwave, kettle etc) she even let us use her washer/dryer. But, it was her small touches that made us really happy. There was a small gift basket waiting when we arrived filled with snacks and chocolate; there was even a tiny cat sticker on the folded toilet paper in the bathroom :-) It was the little things that made the place feel like it was professionally maintained.

Shella was also very responsive to our questions and even brought us extra pillows moments after we asked. Our communications were all very pleasant experiences.

The only complaint we could have had all week was that we were running out of hot water during the second shower of the morning. It was a little frustrating but we just switched up our shower schedule so we could both have hot water every day.

In all, this was an amazing trip made only better by the studio we were staying in. The quiet neighborhood and silence of our studio was a welcome relief from the bustling chaos that was most of our days in the city. I would recommend Shella's place to anyone traveling to San Francisco.

    Response from Shella:

I'm so glad that you enjoyed your stay and I'm also glad you mentioned the problem with enough hot (email hidden) hasn't been a problem upstairs and I'd never heard about it before this. I'll take a look and see if there is something I can do about that. Thanks and good luck with your future travels!

  • My girlfriend and I enjoyed a wonderful stay at Shella's apartment suite. The apartment sits in the North part of the comfortable and convenient Bernal Heights. The room was clean, private and very comfortable - perfect for our needs! Shella was very responsive, even though she was traveling during the weekend of our stay. She was flexible in allowing me to leave my bags in the garage on the last day, which was much appreciated. Thanks for a great stay!

  • Shella was very communicative and flexible, the room is nice and very well located close to downtown in a quiet street.
She left us some breakfast fruits and coffee and some more goodies. The bathroom with all you need! The place was very clean.
The room is on the basement you will enter though the garage and it's a bit cold, but she has couple of nice heaters that solved that issue. I would recommend this place

  • Frequent travelers will appreciate all of the thought Shella has put into making your stay comfortable in her terrific studio. This is not an airbnb location that gives the uneasy feeling of staying in someone else's home. Instead, it allows you to relax with feeling of being a guest in premium boutique hotel suite, but with many of the added comforts of home.

Shella is a wonderful host and made the entire stay pleasant and convenient, the studio was very comfortable and the neighborhood was an added surprise.

  • This studio was a total gem. It was so clean and cute, and it had lovely natural light. We were there during a chilly week, but the heaters warmed the room to a cozy temperature.

The room felt completely private, and the "kitchenette" area was well-stocked with utensils and dishes, and Shella was nice enough to leave chocolates, oatmeal packets, fruit, and tea for us. The claw-foot bathtub is gorgeous and perfect for a long soak after a day of climbing hills. (It was spotless, and I had no qualms about taking a bath in it almost every night.)

Shella was very friendly and always responded quickly to any questions. She was totally accommodating and gracious about letting us drop off our luggage before check-in time when we got in early and letting us store our luggage before an evening flight.

The location was really easy as a home base. There were several bus lines within a 3-block radius that could get you anywhere in the city within 30-60 minutes, but there were also some great restaurants in the neighborhood. (We had a particularly stellar meal at Hillside Supper Club a few blocks away--highly recommend!)

The rate for this room was an amazing deal. Shella had just listed the property when we were looking, and we took a chance by booking before she had any reviews, but it worked out beautifully. (And looking at other reviews that have come in since we booked, she's had universally glowing feedback).

I've stayed in several AirBnB places in NYC, DC, Istanbul, Maui, and Santa Fe, and this was one of my favorites. I'd recommend it without reservation and would stay here again in a heartbeat.

I am the Director of Finance and Development for a non-profit organization--Legal Services for Children. Traveling is a big part of my non-working life. I believe in slow travel and often stay in one place for long periods of time in order to relax and get the feel of a place. Leading up to a trip, I immerse myself in research and planning, getting to know a little of the history, art and language of my destination. Some of the places that I enjoy visiting again and again are Mexico, Italy, France, Ireland and Fire Island, a barrier island along Long Island, NY where I grew up. At home, I enjoy music, movies, and reading. I organize a history-focused book club and an urban walking group called San Francisco City Steps. I am passionate about animal rights and volunteer with Toni's Kitty Rescue and Animal Care and Control, the local city animal shelter.
