Located in Bernal Heights--SF's most popular neighborhood--this cozy studio-like suite is ideal for independent travelers who enjoy quiet and privacy. You have your own entrance, kitchen basics for light meals, and bathroom with clawfoot tub.

The Space

This bright and comfy suite features:

• A queen sized bed with new Sealy mattress, quality linens and down alternative pillows and comforter

• A private entrance from the street and through the garage (Not much curb appeal, but you won’t walk through someone else’s living space as you come and go)

• A private bathroom with a clawfoot tub

• An improvised "kitchenette" for light meals with a mini-refrigerator/freezer, microwave oven, convection-toaster-broiler oven

• A radiator/space heater to warm up the room on those cooler San Francisco days

Guest Access

You have access to our washer and dryer in the garage. These are older appliances shared with the tenant on the 3rd floor, but they get the job done.

There is free wireless access for your laptop or tablet. There is NO TELEVISION, but you can stream media using your accounts with Netflix, Hulu, etc.

You are welcome to enjoy our warm Mission sunshine in the garden, just outside your room. Presently, the YARD IS IN ROUGH SHAPE, but we're working (slowly) on making it a bit nicer. We welcome cigarette smokers in the garden too, but please throw butts in the garbage.

Check-in is after 4:00 pm and check-out is at noon. Let us know when you are arriving and departing and we'll do our best to be flexible, store your bags, etc.

Interaction with Guests

I live in the separate flat upstairs and another tenant lives on the 3rd floor. Depending on our schedules you may rarely see me. But, I'm always a phone call, email or knock on the door away to give you any assistance, answer questions or offer directions or tips for sightseeing.

The Neighborhood

We are located on the border of the vibrant Mission District and charming Bernal Heights which was named the #1 hottest neighborhood in the country for 2014 (Redfin Research Center).

The neighborhood is reasonably safe, keeping in mind that no place is entirely safe. Anyone who is comfortable with urban living and street savvy will feel fine. That means watch where you are going. Don't walk around texting or talking on your cell phone. Never leave anything in your car. These safety guidelines are important in any neighborhood, in any city.

While parts of Mission Street can seem a bit gritty, look beyond and you'll find bucolic parks, tree lined streets with pretty Victorian homes, world-class mural art, and countless taquerias, bookstores, cafes, shops, bakeries and restaurants.

Getting around

Public transit will connect you anywhere in the city. There are several Muni bus stops within a block or two and the 24th Street BART stop is a 15 minute walk away, connecting you to downtown and either SFO or OAK airports.

The garage offers easy and safe parking for bikes if you bring one or choose to rent. The immediate neighborhood offers nice flat riding and your host can offer you tips on bike routes, bike safety (avoid theft) and taking your bike on MUNI.

We are just off the exits for highways 101 and 280. Street parking in this neighborhood is free (no meters, no permits needed). Parking is relatively easy compared to other parts of the city, but, there are times when you will need to drive around for 5-10 minutes before getting lucky. Watch out for signs telling you when parking is not allowed due to street sweeping or construction. Usually you can find a space on our block. If the space in front of our house is open, you may park there. IT IS OKAY TO BLOCK OUR DRIVEWAY, but do not park on the sidewalk. Keep in mind that usually a car is not needed or wanted for your sightseeing in San Francisco, since parking in other parts of the city can be impossible.

  • The little Studio was great. It was charming and lovely decorated. Everything was as described. - It was very clean, safe and lovingly decorated. The wifi was sometimes a little tricky but we figured it out.

The Neighborhood is just great. You have parks around the corner and the amazingly Mission district is just great! You can walk nearly everywhere and for downtown you can take the BART which is just a walk away.

Shella was very well organized and had a great manual with tips and mapping for us.

If you like diverse neighborhoods and enjoy walking and coffees and good food than come here.

Don't forget to bring you jacket to San Fran - it is surprisingly cold but a great place.

  • My husband and I had a relaxing time in Shella's cozy studio! She was communicative and helpful throughout the entire experience. Her studio is well portrayed in the photos; it was clean, and organized with everything you could possibly need for your stay.

It is also in an eclectic and fun neighborhood. It is not too difficult to find parking in the area. We often found parking near a school a block over from the studio. There is a park close to the studio with a great cafe called the Precita Park Cafe (the egg sandwich for breakfast is delicious!). There are also many other great local restaurants/bars in walking distance from the place. Would definitely stay there again.

  • We stayed at Shella's place for 6 nights and we could not ask for a better place to stay. The room has everything you need, was very clean and we felt really comfortable. The area is nice too with a park nearby, restaurants and a good public transport connections to downtown. Shella is a great host, responded right away to our questions and provided us a very warm welcome. Thank you!
I would definitely stay there again when in San Francisco.

  • We had a great time staying at Shella's. Her place was right near the best parts of the mission but was quiet at the same time. Check in/out was easy and Shella was very friendly and communicative. Only downside was the temperamental wifi connection!

  • Shella's place was perfect, it's small but has everything you need! The location is very convenient and I didn't have any issues finding a parking spot. Shella is flexible and responsive if you need anything. I'd definitely recommend to anyone traveling to San Francisco. Thanks Shella!

  • Shella was a great host - it was easy to get in contact with her when needed and she went out of her way to make sure that we were able to get the key right when we arrived. The room itself was very bright and clean, and we were pleasantly surprised by how powerful the shower was in the cool old-fashioned bath tub. We were there during the week and had no trouble finding parking nearby (no permit required) and only had to move the car once for street cleaning. Precita Park Cafe is a hip little coffee shop with great food that's right across the street, and we enjoyed it so much that we went there several times. The building itself seems to be in a safe location, but some of the neighboring areas are a little rough. (Since it's a decent walk to get to many of the local restaurants in the Mission, I'd suggest getting a taxi/Uber car if you're heading out after dark.) All in all, we really enjoyed our stay here and would certainly consider staying here again on our next trip to San Fran.

  • Shella was a great host, she was accommodating to our late arrival and was easy to communicate with. The studio was perfect, and was true to the listing. Although it was small, it did not lack San Francisco charm. The bed was very comfortable, and the claw foot tub and show had great pressure and hot water. The studio was very clean, and bright and you could walk to some restaurants and bars from there. I would definitely stay here again!

  • Shella's place is great and very cute! We really enjoyed our stay there and walking around the neighbourhood. The location is nice, right next to Mission where there are plenty of bars and restaurants. Shella was also very kind, informative and discrete.

I am the Director of Finance and Development for a non-profit organization--Legal Services for Children. Traveling is a big part of my non-working life. I believe in slow travel and often stay in one place for long periods of time in order to relax and get the feel of a place. Leading up to a trip, I immerse myself in research and planning, getting to know a little of the history, art and language of my destination. Some of the places that I enjoy visiting again and again are Mexico, Italy, France, Ireland and Fire Island, a barrier island along Long Island, NY where I grew up. At home, I enjoy music, movies, and reading. I organize a history-focused book club and an urban walking group called San Francisco City Steps. I am passionate about animal rights and volunteer with Toni's Kitty Rescue and Animal Care and Control, the local city animal shelter.
