Our secluded cabin in the woods has a spacious Master bedroom with doors that lead right out onto the (almost) wraparound second-story porch. Our property adjoins the Nantahala National Forest, and it's just a mile or two hike through the woods to reach Hiwassee Lake!
Our cabin is truly secluded- it's the last lot on the circle of mostly empty woods lots- in fact, you can walk out the doors and go for a hike down to the lake. The cabin is fully furnished and completely modern, so it's a perfect place to stay if you've been out camping or playing in the woods all day.
There's a washer and dryer in the basement, next to the Rec Room that has a ping-pong table, electronic dart board, HD DirectTV and an X-Box 360. There is wireless internet throughout the cabin. The kitchen, living room, and main bathroom are shared.
We are very friendly, and are available to answer any questions that you may have about local attractions, restaurants, and fun, outdoor places nearby. With that said, if you like your privacy, we certainly respect that, too! We do live on the bottom floor of the cabin, so we will be around, using the kitchen for meals, but generally do our own thing and keep to ourselves.
The neighborhood is on a private circle that wanders up and down hills through the woods on a gravel drive. There are cabins that people live in year-round, but we are far enough out that we don't really have any close neighbors to speak of.
You will definitely need a car to stay in our cabin, and a GPS, as well.
We are several miles from town, so if there's something that you really want, you should bring it with you or grab it in town at the Ingles Supermarket, to save yourself a drive to get it later...
NOTE: Western NC is home to the Southern Unstriped Scorpion. It grows up to one inch in length, and is about as poisonous as a bee sting. They prefer to live outdoors and avoid people, but we have seen them in the house. They are active at night, so please don't walk around barefooted at night, and keep your bed from touching the wall. Insecticides are not very effective against scorpions (nor are they healthy for us), so we just practice removal of their bodies after we swat them with a flip-flop.
The space remains as magical as the first time I went there. A fall colors fireworks show in the trees behind the house, the lake - deserted - still a great swimming temp by Northern standards. Favorite moment: rocking on the wood porch, cradling a cup of hot coffee on crisp fall morning listening to the sound of falling leaves. The place was immaculate yet homey and well arranged with amenities helpful for guests like me. Still my go-to place in Western North Carolina if I'm seeking a peaceful retreat.
I had a lovely weekend Sean Mark and Melisa's. The home is very comfortable and located in a beautiful, peaceful setting. Sean Mark and Melisa were very helpful and gracious hosts. I would definitely return!
What a pleasure to stay at Sean and Melissa's cabin.
They were adorable and cooked a delicious breakfast for us.
My girlfriend fell in love with Melissa's banana bread .
The room is very large with a beautiful view on the forest.
And the wooden deck is a great place to relax.
The best escape from the noisy, cramped, big city I could have hoped for! Great peace and quiet. A wonderful sense of space everywhere: from the rooms, to the wide wooden porch (with wooden rockers!), to the wide paths through the woods, to the clear, calm lake nearby, to the broad natural vistas on top of the hill. Sean and Melisa are wonderful hosts: friendly, easy-going, there if and when you need them. I felt like their guest. This will definitely be my go-to place for Western North Carolina R&R.
Stop looking! You want to stay here! My girlfriend and I were looking for a retreat in the woods by a lake and this was way better than we imagined! Sean and Melisa are the type of hosts that feel like staying with old friends. We had such a great time cooking and just hanging out with them. The house is awesome! Even though it's shared, we never felt like we didn't have privacy if we wanted it. The wrap around porch looks out into a forest and is such a great space to sit on the rocking chairs and relax. There's a beautiful path that winds down to a pristine lake with complete privacy-- we saw one boat and we were there on labor day weekend! At night, we had a blast playing ping pong and sharing stories. If you have kids (or are a big kid) there are lots of video games to play (I loved how each room had a different generation of gaming with Sega, Nintendo, and Xbox). I cannot recommend this place enough and we will definitely come back here when we want to get away from the city.
