Glenwood is a vibrant neighbourhood with coffee shops and a bakery worth visiting. The art gallery is adjacent to the huge park which has recently been refurbished with jogging/cycling/skateboarding tracks and an outdoor gym. The park is well used by many people, including myself and my family.
Public transport could always be better. And that is applicable to the whole of South Africa.
Other Things to Note
In the garden we have pets, including two dogs, one cat and two hens.
No smoking indoors. Our pets (mentioned above) are not allowed in the cottage.
We spend a great week at Gina's place.
The accommodation is larger that the impression created by the photo's and worked perfect as our office away from the office for the week with enough living space and space to relax. WIFI worked very well and the flat is kitted out for extended stays with everything you could possibly need.
As a bonus Gina and Paul are great people that are eager to go the extra mile. The coffee and fruit + snack awaiting us in the room on arrival after a long road trip was a welcome bonus.
Cina's will be my first choice for my next Durban visit.
Although located in the middle of the lively neighborhood of Glenwood, Gina and Paul’s cottage has some remote jungle lodge vibe to it. Thanks to the airy design of the cottage with plenty of windows and a big door, it feels like one would always sit outside in the Garden. When really sitting outside in front of the door and enjoying the sun, you are likely to meet Gina, Paul, and also the two dogs who like to stop by and say hello. Gina and Paul are nice to chat with and patiently help to fix the typical expat problems. Still, there is always enough privacy and the place quickly starts to feel like your own home with nice neighbors. This is also because of the personal and friendly interior design, which is a welcome change towards some sterile apartments you might have seen on Air BnB.
I used the place to work during the day, which was perfect. The garden cools the cottage down and the big space doesn’t give you the feeling to sit in one room the whole day. There is a desk and a real office chair. Internet speed is ok during the day and fast at night. As other commenters already wrote, the surroundings offer everything you need, including good coffee, food, parks, supermarkets.
We are happy to return soon for the second part of our stay (6 weeks in total)!
Gina and Paul's cottage is a wonderful place to stay in Durban and we would highly recommend it. My husband and I stayed in the cottage for six months - we made two separate bookings after our plans changed in January, and this review is for the second booking but applies to the entire stay. We were very happy to extend our stay and that is a testament to the comfort and hospitality we experienced.
First, the space is much larger than it looks in the photo. We had plenty of room to create work and living spaces without feeling crowded or cluttered. The kitchen has a full sized fridge and plenty of counter area, plus a full sized washer. The water pressure and hot water in the bathroom are excellent. Also, the shade from the trees keeps it from getting too hot in the summer. We stayed during the hottest months of the year and we were just fine. The cottage is very well maintained and it is obvious that a lot of effort had gone into keeping it clean and livable. The location is great, with plenty of shops and restaurants nearby; it's a short drive into the CBD and close to the major freeways.
Second, Gina and Paul are amazing hosts! Gina stocked the kitchen with some items that we were unlikely to pick up on our way in but that made a big difference the morning after our (very late) arrival - milk and tea, croissants for breakfast. From our first meeting until we left, they were very friendly, interested and understanding. They often helped us with everything from recommendations for leisure to medical care. They also respected our privacy, and even though the cottage is situated behind the house, we never felt that we were just living in someone's back yard.
Overall, we are grateful for the wonderful stay and would happily return.
The reservation was canceled 61 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
A nice, quiet, clean and welcoming cottage. Spacious and airy and bigger than the photos make it look. Well kitted out and everything you need for self catering. We were surprised with a selection of basics in the kitchen to get us started so we didn't have to go hunting for a shop on the first night. The private entrance means you come and go as you please without bothering anyone. Would definitely go back given the opportunity.
I go to Durban once a year since 2001 to supervise students at UKZN and the stay in Gina's place was definitely one of the best experiences. The place is really large and has a high roof with a roof window to see the mostly blue sky, a large door to the garden, large bathroom and is very nicely furnished. The kitchen and bathroom are spacious, there is a large fridge, a washing machine, large cabinets for clothes, heating, ironing board, ... just everything you can imagine you might need including fast uncapped internet.
Gina and her husband Paul are very interested and pleasant people and it is a very good experience to live in their peaceful place with a garden and nice animals. I liked the chicken (they are usually locked up on the other side of the garden). There is a garage and separate entrance giving the guests a lot of privacy.
A very good start of the day is Coffee Tree across the road (opens at 6.30 am and 7.30 on weekends). The area makes a safe impression with a large and beautiful park nearby that is well guarded. It is a short walk to restaurants (try Mooki Noodles) and bars like Amsterdam as well as grocery stores. Glenwood is a very interesting and vibrant neighborhood. I fully recommend the place to stay for short and long periods. It was a happy time.
Juergen was a very interesting and friendly tenant. He was a wealth of fascinating information and we had many great conversations in the back garden under the wide African sky. He was a very generous and helpful visitor who was exceptionally positive about this country, the students he taught at the university and life in general. It was a pleasure having him and his wife Rung to stay.
Really wonderful self-catering cottage, pops of colour in the interior and high ceiling made it extremely comfortable and airy. It was perfectly appointed - with enormous cupboard space, great bed with all the linen you need, to everything you need in the kitchen (incl a washing machine) it was easy to settle in and feel immediately set up for a long stay. It also has an automated garage if you have a car (which you need for getting around cities in South Africa), although the cottage is ideally located for walking to most of Glenwood's great cafes, restaurants, shops and parks while being in a tranquil street. Woolworths Food, Green Bean cafe, NSA Gallery, Corner Cafe, Mooki Noodles and more are all nearby.
Gina and Paul are great to chat with when you run into each other as you come and go, they're never far away should you need them, and (if it's a concern to anyone) their pets were barely noticeable and no hassle at all.
I really enjoyed staying here and definitely recommend it. And big thumbs up for separate waste and recycling bins :-)
