THE CAROUSEL ROOM" is close to public transportation, the perfect base camp for you to explore the City. We're just 5 minutes walk to public buses, MUNI subway, & historic streetcars--very convenient. We offer a large private room in a classic home in the Castro near cute shops, bars & restaurants. The room is decorated with antiques & Victorian charm, with a comfy bed, free wifi & a piano. If you like to go out, explore & love great food at all price points, we're the perfect spot for you!

The space
We offer a cozy bedroom for 1-2 guests, a comfy double bed in a charming Victorian flat in the center of town. The bed has hypo-allergenic pillows of different heights--one is a memory-foam. The room also has a small fold-out futon & a piano you can play if you wish (music hours are from 10AM to 8PM with respect for our neighbors.) Features: high ceilings, wood floors, central heating, a large kitchen, laundry room & garden. The 3 bedroom home is shared with my housemate Rebecca, myself, our cats Monty & Prudence, & our kitten, Winston. They are not allowed in your room, so please keep the door closed. Once a month, our friend Kevin drops by & sleeps on the couch, but is always gone by 6AM, so odds are you'll never see him.

Our building is a classic Edwardian mansion built in 1904. In the 1920s, many of these homes became 3 flats (apartments) and ours, a 3 bedroom, is lovely. It's a typical "railroad" style flat, with a long hallway and bedrooms off to the side. The living room, kitchen & laundry room are located in the back of the house. Your room is the middle bedroom & is far enough away from the streets to remain quiet. Victorian homes rarely have closets in the bedrooms, so I have provided a luggage rack, padded hangers & a coat rack in the room for you to hang your clothing. My grandfather was an All-American who played football for Stanford University & later for the Detroit Lions. I have some memorabilia from his time in professional sports, so if that's something you're interested in, I'm happy to share some stories with you. There are books in the room, many on San Francisco, & you are welcome to borrow them. There is also a CD player/CDs & a piano you are welcome to play. The room has wifi with a printer to use if you need to print boarding passes. Maps & coupons can be found in the House Manual binder.

Although many guests prefer to check out our nearby cafes which offer free wifi & fun people-watching, we do offer complimentary toast, tea & coffee in our large, sunny kitchen. There are 2 shared bathrooms, with a full shower & tub. We provide shampoo, fresh towels & washcloths.

Our home is great for travelers who want to experience the true San Francisco in a classic home situated in an historic neighborhood.

Guest access
We have 2 bathrooms (one with a tub & shower), a living room, kitchen (limited to morning coffee/tea etc. which are complimentary) and a washer/dryer onsite (you can purchase detergent & other sundries you may need at the corner store, 5 minutes away.) All guests must be fully verified. Air BnB prohibits 3rd party bookings (in other words--if you book the room, you need to stay here as well.)

Other things to note
Check-In is 4PM-12 midnight (if you need to check in later, it needs to be arranged in advance.)
Check-Out is at 11AM (Late Check-Out also needs to be arranged ahead of time-thanks.)

1) Parking is near impossible in San Francisco, & we don't have onsite parking. Luckily public transportation including subways, buses, & streetcars, are a 5 minute walk from our house & very convenient. The high-speed train BART is about a 10 minute walk away & it takes you to & from the airport--all very affordable & more convenient than parking a car.

2) San Francisco homes are built very close together.

3) This is a home shared with 2 women, 2 cats & a kitten--it's not a hotel, which is why it is so much more affordable. It's a bit like staying in the guest room at your eccentric, "artsy" Auntie's cozy Victorian home.

4) The kitchen is restricted for morning use only, & we offer complimentary coffee & teas. After 11:00 AM the kitchen is closed. Guests may not use the kitchen to cook evening meals. If you have a beverage or snack you want to store in the fridge, please label it, so it doesn't get consumed or turn into a "science project" if you accidentally leave it behind. But, you won't need to cook--restaurants are part of the San Francisco experience, & we have over 20+ restaurants within walking distance, at all price points from bargain cheap-eats to gourmet. Whole Foods Market also has a wonderful array of healthy foods in their deli including a variety of light salads--all organic & free range--soups & entrees you can enjoy at their indoor bar or outdoor picnic tables. Bi-Rite Market has wonderful sandwiches & other picnic items you can take & enjoy at nearby Dolores Park.

5) We don't have locks on the doors. We trust you, & you can trust us not interrupt your privacy.

6) We don't require a deposit because all guests are carefully screened.

7) Please--be mindful of the key. Don't lose your key or accidentally take it with you when you check out. The fee for a lost key is $100 (the cost of replacing the locks.)

8) The garbage collectors come early on Tuesday mornings. If you're a light sleeper & book a Tuesday, we have earplugs available--other than that, our home is pretty quiet.

Location

San Francisco, California, United States

We are located in "the Castro" an historical district in the middle of the City. This location is absolutely ideal because so many attractions, stores & restaurants are within easy walking distance. Public transportation to get around town is the most convenient in the City.

It's a great walking neighborhood. Much has been written about our enclave. Often called the "Gay Mecca," the Castro has been a destination spot for LGBTQ travelers for decades. The weather here & in the Mission is warmer than the rest of town, which is known for its microclimates--if it's warm in the Castro, walk 5 blocks, it might get windy. So, it's always good to bring a jacket!

The Castro is known for its bars & restaurants. My favorite, the Last Call, is a pub just a short walk from the house. It is very welcoming to travelers & locals, straight & gay alike. The owner Kevin is Irish & he has great taste in music--enjoy the eclectic juke box, & on chilly days, they have a cozy fireplace & good hot toddy. It's the perfect spot to have a conversation & not be drowned out by loud music.

A short walk from the Last Call, you'll find Castro Street. You can take in a movie at the Castro Theatre. Built in the 1920s, it's an art-deco palace which shows a variety of films. It was restored by director Gus Van Sant when he filmed the Academy-Award winning film "Milk," starring Sean Penn & James Franco. Also on Castro Street, you'll find a variety of shops, including Cliff's Variety which sells hardware + a wide variety of cute gifts, costumes, & wigs! There's a great bookstore nearby, Dog-Eared Books. Across the street & a block down, check out the best seafood in town at the Anchor Oyster Bar on Castro which serves fresh seafood (the garlic crab is the BEST.)

There are lots of local shops on Market Street, too. If you are interested in the metaphysical, you can check out the Crystal Way, which sells books as well as candles, crystals, incense, & unusual jewelry. There are a variety of new & vintage clothing stores & jewelry shops.

The Mission Dolores, one of California's famous missions built in 1776, is a 5 minute walk down 16th Street, & Dolores Park is just 2 blocks from there. This park offers spectacular views of the City, & is great for a picnic on sunny days.

As you may have guessed, San Francisco is a foodie-town. Other restaurants nearby our house include Chow on Church which serves breakfast-lunch-& dinner, the sidewalk Cafe Flor on Market @ 16th which has a farmer's market on Wednesday afternoons, & trendy foodie-destination Frances, to name a few. There are 4 sushi bars within a 3 block radius! My favorite is 1 minute from our house, Eiji. It's a 10 minute walk to the Mission for great Mexican food--OR--you can experience a 4 course Chef's tasting menu at Mr. Pollo for $15! I found out about this place when it was featured on the Food Network/Cooking Channel show "The Best Thing I Ever Ate," & you know what? It is! Don't let the name fool you--Mr. Pollo used to be a Columbian restaurant. Chef Johnny & your server Will kept the name & are now dazzling diners with their beautiful food. It's a small place--has only 12 seats & 3 seatings 6pm, 7:45pm, & 9. Reservations are a must.

I've lived in San Francisco all my life and love giving visitors tips about our hidden gems and fun things to do here. If you already know the ropes--no problem, but if you'd like some ideas about places to check out & things to do, don't hesitate to ask. The Castro where you will be staying is my favorite neighborhood. We're friendly, have fantastic restaurants & cool places like the historic Castro Theater Movie Palace & Dolores Park just a short walk away. I'm a non-smoker, pretty easy-going. I got into Air B&B because I enjoyed the experiences I've had traveling and wanted to open up my home to fellow travelers. The "City," as it's known here, is probably the most European city in the U.S. and that may be why folks from Europe tend to feel at home here (please don't call it "SAN FRAN" or "Frisco! ;))). San Francisco is internationally known for its gorgeous views and unique architectural beauty, excellent restaurants for any price-range, and of course, our free-spirited philosophy. It gives me a lot of happiness to share this experience with you.
