Beach Cottage on the lower Delaware bay (15 miles south of Dover) . Porch's on both sides provide views of the beach and salt marsh. One bathroom with Shower.
It is rustic - low ceilings keeps it cozy. There is a big TV for playing DVD's or VCR tapes (we also have a large supply of tapes at the house)
Neighborhood is small and friendly - only 38 total houses on the island.
There are no shops - bring your food and drink.
The House is right on the beach with a small boardwalk to cross the dunes.
Easy to have a bonfire on the beach. We have a supply of wood.
There are 2 Kayaks for use. You can Kayak on the bay or paddle up the river. Note - the current in the river can be strong.
We completely loved staying at Kim's cottage on the beach! The views are spectacular. As promised, it was easy to find enough firewood to make a fire on the beach. The neighbors were helpful and friendly, and we loved all the quirkiness of the house. We'll definitely be back!
I had a great Sunday evening on the beach at Kim's pad. The weather was perfect for early October and Kim was nice enough to welcome us and have the Kayaks ready to go.
The place is rustic but that's just what I needed to get out of the city mindset. The beach is just steps away and it's a beautiful place to catch a nice sunrise and sunset, did I mention how many stars you can see at night?
Bring food and drink, there aren't any stores nearby but that's the beauty of it all. Everything else is there including a radio with a connection for an Ipod, fridge, stove, a few dishes and best of all the Kayaks :-)
The cottage was as expected- nice, airy, clean, and had all that we wanted. This is a small beach village, and the sun rises over the bay in front of the house. Kim and his wife were very kind and let us use their kayaks. Hint: Don't go too far down the river as it's a major workout to get back up. We did get a little discombobulated the Sunday we left by rising water that covers the road to the bridge that allows you to leave what is kind of an island. Kim kindly offered to have us take our cars past the water, and then drive us back to the house. But we had to pack all of our stuff, so that was not really possible, so we left about 2 hours earlier than planned. All in all, a really nice peaceful weekend getaway for us with fresh air and friendly surroundings.
We had a great time here. The experience of staying right on the beach is unbeatable. Our weekend was complete with kayaking, long strolls on the beach, and watching sunsets. The experience of staying here is somewhere between camping and being in a hotel; the structure is pretty "open air", which lends itself to the faux-Caribbean motif of the place. The neighbors are especially friendly; make sure to bring extra beer as that seems to be the local currency.
This cozy beach cabin is a stone's throw from Bowers Beach in a casual, quiet waterfront community. The accommodation is basic but had all the amenities we were looking for to complete an escape from our city lives. The screened in porch is the perfect place to sit and read or daydream. The interior was large enough to accommodate at least one other couple, or a bigger family. The kitchen was stocked with the basics (pans, glasses, plates, etc) and had we planned to stay longer, cooking would have been doable. You'll notice there isn't much to do in the area surrounding the cabin, so bring whatever diversions and food/booze you think you might need. Nearby JPs on the Wharf is a great place to stop for a beer, listen to live music, and grab a bite to eat (a 20min drive around the canal, though). Wake up early enough to watch the sunrise over the water as the local fishermen start their day - you won't regret it.
I cannot express how much I love this place. I almost don't want to leave a review because I want it all to myself for next summer and subsequent summers, but being the bigger person, I'll share this with you all. Think Moonrise Kingdom meets the beach. This simple, no-frills fishing shack style home is a one-of-a-kind. Yes, there is a functional kitchen in which I cooked full meals and even baked a pie and cobbler; however, it is a shotgun shack in the best meaning of the words. Simple, open airy spaces and the photos tell the true story of the place- St Lucia style cabin with creative woodwork and tropical paint colors. The luxury is the location, in hearing the wooden floors creak when you walk on them, smelling the salt air, and saying hello to neighbors who treat you like you've been there all along. Right out front is the beach, right out back is a spectacular salt marsh. The majesty of this setting is breathtaking and you can hear the sounds of the waves as you sleep at night. South Bowers is a charming little private community with terrific white sand beaches on the Delaware, and many active fishermen abound in the channel. The hosts are lovely, warm folks and provided us with items that we needed in a flash. I highly recommend this rental to anyone who wants some peace and quiet OR wish to chat with locals and blend in with the full experience. Either way, you can't go wrong. I will be back.
