About this listing

Artistic Sanctuary surrounded by 80 acres of meadows and river access, yet a mile from Concord center. Once the famous Hallowell farm, a site briefly owned by Thoreau. Rentable while on the market to sell, rare opportunity.
While Walden Pond is just around the corner, the special combination of proximity to riding trails, and conservation land, is a timeless grand secluded retreat near many fine amenities. No Booking requests without inquiry first. I like to talk about your plans.

The space

A spectacular and rare rental opportunity while this house is on the market. Long or short term rentals are available at the moment.

This New England home is surrounded by brilliant colors reflecting off the Sudbury River, meadows and woodlands abound, and a spot to be enjoyed whatever the season. This is one of the most spectacular spots to see the New England leaves, the winter snows, or the spring colors.

Located in Concord Ma, 20 miles west of Boston and Cambridge it has easy access to schools and other towns and Boston hospitals.
One mile to the train, twenty minutes to Alewife station. This is one of the most beautiful and affluent historic towns in New England. There are so many biking and walking trails, historic sites and the home of Thoreau, Emerson and the Alcotts with near-by Walden Pond. The September issue of Boston Magazine highlights it here:

This estate, sits atop 40 acres adjoining the river and is surrounded by another 40 acres of conservation land behind it .While you experience a quiet area in the midst of nature, it is one mile to the historic Concord, filled with history, private schools, sites, and shopping opportunities.

The "rustic eclectic", 1905 home is perfect for a large family where family reunions or other holiday gatherings become the setting for entertaining and long term living.

Each one of the five bedroom suites is spacious with its own bath and often fireplace. There is about 7,500 sq. ft of living space plus balconies and screen porches, patios etc..

The turn of the century residence, built as a country summer home sits high atop 40 acres. The panoramic views feed inspiration and is one of the finest in New England with historic provenance, natural beauty and direct access to some fo the most attractive well guarded conservation land in the world. A true piece of Concord history, virtually untouched since described by Thoreau in his magnificent work, Walden Pond.

There is river access and the ability to ride the pontoon or canoes over from the North Bridge Boat House. Walking trails abound. Bikers peddle all over this area and in winter the cross country sking is everywhere.

This is a wonderful comfortable artist's home – a weekend country house and getaway or can be used as a main home with nearby schools and restaurants.

Prices are negotiable depending on length of stay and numbers of people. Looking for the perfect buyer or short term renter who might convert to a long term renter....with proper permitting events are available as well. There is an apartment attached to the house that can be included for a fee.

Guest access

Everything any family who lives there would...the joys of a town in the woods with all the conveniences of history and affluence. You enjoy the entire house and all of the 20 acres down to the river and into the woods.

Interaction with guests

By email and phone quite a bit before they arrive. My caretaker and cleaner are available throughout the stay.

Other things to note

The town is very clear about rentals being for a minimum of thirty there is as little disruption to the neighborhood as possible. Every effort should be taken to ensure the rental will be quiet with a minimum of activity and an awareness of the neighbors needs as well. Obviously no smoking, no large cars such as buses, loud things like motorcycles etc...things that might be seen as disruptive or loud, fireworks .

Karen made us feel extremely welcome. We held a reception for about 40 people after my mother's memorial service which was a great success. The livingroom and diningroom were perfect for entertaining and the local caterer had no trouble working in the kitchen. Everyone had a wonderful time. Several members of our family stayed in the house over the weekend and found the beds very comfortable and the spacious accommodations very appealing. We loved waking up to look out on the beautiful fields and autumn colors in the trees as the sun rose over the Sudbury River. This is a fantastic Airbnb!

From the outset Karen was extremely polite and welcoming through her responsive communications. This was required as we were coming from the United Kingdom and this was the first time we were using AirBnB. Karen was extremely patient in answering our tirade of pre booking questions. Once booked and paid for the information that we received both prior and on arrival at the property was extremely well presented. This made it very easy to settle into the property very quickly. The house itself is in a wonderful location and blessed with a significant amount of space and bedrooms which was key for our month long stay. For the few times that we were not working the grounds and house were peaceful and relaxing. I am certainly going to miss the view from the house down to the Sudbury River. An absolute bonus was Lee Ann Weatherbee. A contact provided by Karen. Lee Ann has a cleaning business and livery business which suited our visit brilliantly as we organised with Lee Ann a few airport runs and a mid stay clean. Lee Ann herself was extremely welcoming and her local knowledge invaluable. In summary, a fantastic host, a fantastic location and somewhere I will miss.

Our group of former high school friends had a reunion in New England and used Karen's house as our home base. We fell in love with the house - the views from different vantage points were spectacular, ample and huge bedrooms for everyone, comfortable beds to sleep in, huge kitchen where everyone invariably congregated. Cooking and eating meals here gave us more time with each other with the added bonus of working together to prepare the meal and wash up afterwards. The camaraderie that being in this house fostered can not be measured. The awesome views served as backdrops to pictures we took that will remind us later of the wonderful reunion we had at this place.

Karen's home is spectacular. I was truly sorry to leave and can't wait to have an excuse to return. It is obviously the home of artists and world travelers with a keen eye to detail, charm and beauty. Furnishings are extremely comfortable while simultaneously one feels they are living in a museum. My only regret was not having time enough to invite friends and family to enjoy the experience. Karen is lovely and an excellent communicator. Anyone with an opportunity to be a guest in this house should consider themselves quite fortunate.

Karen User ProfileKaren is a superhost.

Lauren Walters is an entrepeneur- He grew up in Missouri - worked in the US Senate, lived in Concord Ma. for 25 years - chairs a few boards, Education and Technology , Consensus Building etc. - and is now the founder and ceo of 2 Degrees Food - a social impact venture based in SF (URL HIDDEN) He loves travel, and spending time with his wife and two sons. He collects dots of information and people, curious about everything, but new ideas, frontiers in medicine as the son of two doctors are always interesting!

We have moved to the Mill Valley area and -have two sons, Ed and Peter. They often help manage these properties so we will mention them here. Ed is working in Cambridge, having just left DC and Brookings. Peter, more recently graduated from Trinity College, was working with 2 DegreesFood in business development and is a tall ship sailor! Currently Peter is traveling the world, having been to India and sailed to South Africa, just leaving Thailand for Nepal to trek for five weeks! Ed is now mid way through HBS and helping out with east coast properties.

Karen Cadenhead is currently a sculptor and was previously a professor of Art Therapy.- She hails from Oklahoma. (she is pinch hitting with Two Degrees when needed in art and account management )

As a couple we love to travel, meet new people and explore new ideas. We would be called early adopters. We spent the first years of our married life renovating and creating spaces..love to collect architectural salvage and make it into something.

Now we are exploring innovative ways to have social impact.
While network seems a trivial term, we not only know a lot of people but love to connect them in useful ways. We have found this site an unexpected way to discover like minded people and in some cases, have become friends.
