I just completed a 6-night stay at the villa with family (5 adults and one child aged 7). Therese is a warm and gracious host who is proactive in ensuring all accommodation details are arranged perfectly. The villa itself is magnificent - as others have said, pictures simply don't do it justice due to its spacious rooms and thoughtful Balinese decor, including many unique antiques. Simply gorgeous. The staff, including Wayan, Putu and Oka were always helpful. While there is no air conditioning, there are fans throughout the house and fresh air streaming in - the infinity pool is also a terrific way to cool off after busy days sightseeing. Having previously stayed outside of Ubud and in the city centre, this beautiful villa, which is only a 10-minute walk to Ubud through the lively monkey forest, offers the best of all worlds. Loved it and would strongly recommend a stay here!

It was so nice 3 days staying in Lila Bamboo Villa and doing Yoga with Therese. I promise everyone who love nature will fall in love with this HOME. You will feel so comfortable even though just lying in the couch or sitting on the floor. The beds are so cozy that you will sleep like a queen. pay more attention about the nature and inner peace, you will find Lila Bamboo Villa not only a place to stay but more like a connection between your heart and the not care the little bugs on the stairs or the step sound from upstair, they are all the flavour of life. I hope I can come back again someday. The staff here also very nice. The girl can help you making the breakfast and you just need pay for the materials. Also highly recommend to take a yoga class or experience doing yoga on yoga shalla. You will love it!

The Lilla Bamboo Villa was an incredible place to stay in Ubud. Our group of 6 adults loved the pool, property, and rooms. It was a short walk to the monkey forest and the shops nearby. We took taxis to dinner. Therese is an excellent host who was attentive, accommodating, and always responsive within minutes and helped us organize logistics and taxis. The staff is so nice and maintained the house is great shape. We had a chef come in that Therese organized and it was superb. We also had them do breakfasts for us and that was great as well. Highly recommend staying here.

Therese was a great host, very welcoming and helpful with organizing trips during our stay. The villa itself is beautiful and walkable to the main sections of Ubud. Therese organized a Balinese dinner our first night at the house which I highly recommend. The villa is open which provides great ambiance but can also be hot at times and definitely bring mosquito repellent. Overall it was exactly what we were looking for - a relaxing stay that felt isolated while also being close to the great features of Ubud and the surrounding area.

As everyone else has said, the pictures of this villa do not do it justice. It is beautiful and the staff/Therese are incredibly warm and accommodating. My mom had hurt her hand and Therese went out of her way to go get her a brace at the store. Therese also goes above and beyond to make sure you have everything you need. For example, there is bug lotion everywhere, and great working umbrellas, and lots of water available. These things seem simple, but not every villa provides them. Therese has really made sure to cover all the five-star villa bases. We all agreed that the villa was one of the most beautiful places we have ever stayed (if not the most beautiful). My older parents had some difficulty navigating the stone floors in the bathroom and by the pool -- they are very able bodied for their age, so it wasn't a problem, but probably something worth noting for those that are less steady. For the rest of us, the stones/river rocks were beautiful and not a problem. Therese is also a great resource - providing tons of information and great referrals (we loved our guide Joko so much that he ended up driving us around even after leaving the Ubud area -- well worth whatever the extra cost was). The staff was also incredibly kind and helpful. The entire team made sure we had anything we needed. We were looking at a few different places and this villa was he most expensive -- but the extra cost was worth it when considering the beautiful memories. We would highly recommend staying here.

Staying here was the worse memory in Bali. The first bad thing occured we arrived at the villa, We asked the male staff to buy the beers and asked about the price. But he said I don't know how much the beers is.So I passed him 200000Rp.But,he never gave us the bill after buying even if I asked him to give my bill back twice a day.He said that the female staff has the bill who had already came back to the home.I asked her to give my bill back in the next morning, but She said the male staff has the bill. Finally,They gave us the bill with their writing amount to 200000Rp.And We ordered the private chef to cook for us because of two little children (difficult to eat outside)But too poor menu ! Only a bowl of green curry ,the eight fried TOFU,penuts, mountain vegetables made in the garden ,fried banana rice! We paid 800000Rp for that.We were so hungry at night,And the staff was sitting on the kitchen all the time with talking ,We couldn't relaxed at all.the rude staffs made trouble with us unless twice. Finally We couldn't stand any more,my husband wrote the letter to them Don't cook for us, Please leave us alone. We were so dissapointed with staying here.

Response from Therese:
Dear Yukiko, I am truly sorry for any inconvenience that we have caused you. This is the first bad review we ever have had and I must admit I am in shock and will take up all your details of issue with the staff. Sadly I could not be there because of family matters. I am very sad to hear this information since people have nothing but loved Lila Bamboo Villa and we are known to be extremely clean and have great food. Warmest, Therese

Therese Poulsen is a mid wife, a Dr of acupuncture, a Ashtanga Yoga Teacher, and the founder of "Breath of Hope Foundation Inc" & Satyagraha Ashram for children.
A Journey of Heart into the Souls of Children.

I Love to make a difference in the lives of children. Breath of Hope Foundation was founded to fulfill this vision using the grounding signs of nature and the ancient science of yoga, which through BOH programs has created a network of hope for children and communities in South East Asia, in responding to requests and fielding interest in other parts of the world as well.

I Love the nature, Loving kindness and care. My children and my animals and the great sacred teachings.

I love the Sea, riding horses, skiing and running—my deep passion for yoga and its discipline complimented and supported deeper and profound experience, as well as gave great support to life's challenges and demands. As a dedicated Eastern medicine practitioner and with my science background and with my great passion and curiosity for answers of life brought me to have great desire to work hands-on with people.

Life motto:
The Breath of Hope Foundation, Inc. (BOH), is a not-for-profit international organization that fosters empowerment and transformation in at-risk children and communities through a therapeutic intervention of yoga, meditation and philosophy. In collaboration with educators and researchers BOH is advancing knowledge of the benefits of yoga and promoting integrative healing and resiliency for trauma-affected children and other populations. Its educational and training curriculum is designed to rekindle hope and peace in at-risk children through school/community based yoga programs that stimulate a ripple effect from the child to the family, school and beyond.

BOH has conducted extensive re¬search in Indonesia and in Sri Lanka with victims of the 2004 tsunami, generating scientific evidence for the benefits of yoga to children and communities. The studies have established that as self-awareness of the mind-body connection is heightened, overall physical and mental health also improves, circulation and blood chemistry are boosted, and the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems recover their equilibrium. Benefits to the psychological development of children include increased concentration and creativity. Their enhanced social development is reflected in a greater receptivity, sense of gratitude and generosity, and a new willingness to trust.

BOH is the seed in which Satyagraha Ashram for children was born.
“Satyagraha” is a synthesis of the Sanskrit words “Satya” (truth) and “Agraha” (holding firm), and it was characterized by Mahatma Gandhi in his peace movement. Satyagraha is culturally sensitive; we continuously research within the culture to see how we can serve in the best possible way.
Satyagraha Ashram’s vision is to provide children with tools, which offer them a view into healthy and self-sustaining lifestyles, manifesting love and respect for the planet. At Satyagraha we are equally committed to humanity and nature. This remarkable school for organic living is nestled within the village of Nyuh Kuning, Ubud, Bali. It is surrounded by beautiful old Blanggog trees; rivers run through the grounds, and the serenity of the landscape insulates Satyagraha from the bustle of traffic and tourism in nearby Ubud.

The Ashram garden contains an organic vegetable plot to provide the children hands-on experience of how to manifest pesticide-free nourishment, as well as a herbal apotek. A large com¬posting area recycles organic waste, and the Ashram’s three happy cows do their own recycling by mowing the grass, which they trans¬form into milk, and into dung for fertilizer. Satyagraha has donated two pieces of land to the village for growing flowers that are used by the local women for temple offerings, to support the old traditional Balinese culture. In serving one another the villagers help care for our gardens at Satyagraha. A beautiful yoga shala made of bamboo provides a platform for yoga practice, in which people of all ages from nearby areas participate.

Fundraising is an integral part of any not for profit organization. Therese Poulsen has thus far, used much of her own capital to stabilize the projects and conduct research. A key part of the Ashram however, is Lila Bamboo Villa - a traditional Balinese Wantilan bamboo villa with three stories - magnificent and luxurious, though thoroughly soulful. The villa was specifically built to be rented for private vacations, reunions, or small conferences and seminars. All the revenues from the rentals provide funding for the foundation’s work. Lila Bamboo is one of Indonesia’s tallest Wantilan structures. The traditional architecture utilizes sustainable materials: bamboo, palm leaves, alang alang, and local river stones. The interiors feature exceptional pieces of Balinese local wood and stone craftsmanship.
Sounds of crickets and frogs echoes like an orchestra; the scent of frangipani, the traditional Balinese temple flower, fills the air. There is a sense of living in the embrace of nature.
