Only steps away from the beach, hear the waves at night.
A Quiet, private bungalow surrounded by a protected garden and birds in a sweet little neighbourhood.
Simple, basic , rustique. In one of the most beautiful areas of the island.
Ideal for couple, or writers retreat. All amenities included. Small kitchen, refrigerator, toaster oven, blender, Bathroom, wifi, iphone station, towels, beachtowels and bedding etc.
There is a queensize bed and a single bed.
For shopping is Kilauea town about 10 minutes away and Kapaa 15 minutes away. ( by car) For wonderful smoothies, breakfast and lunch drive up the hill 5 minutes for the Moloaa Fruitstand.
Moloaa Bay is a minute walk away and is perfect for snorkling and swimming on both ends. There is also a beautiful hiking area up the cliffs.
We have a kayak and paddleboard available for use in the bay.
The microclimate in this particular area is unique. It has much less rain then Kilauea and Kapaa, and even a little further up the hillside. Pretty much always nice and sunny but never to hot.
Christel's place is a gem. We began our honeymoon here, and we couldn't have been happier. The house is essentially a screened porch, but it is totally hidden away and feels very private. Sleeping here was amazing- it rained in the middle of the night every night we were there, and the screens made that a dreamy acoustic experience. We loved watching the little geckos climb on the outside of the screens at night.
We stayed in two other AirBnB places on Kauai, and Christel's had the best kitchen. We were able to cook feasts, and her full-sized fridge stored all of our food easily. We had candlelit dinners every night.
The location is perfect (this is where we'd want to live if we lived on the island). We could walk to Moloa'a Beach (one of the best beaches, in our opinion) in less than 5 minutes. The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful, and we were close enough to easily drive to other awesome north or east-side beaches and hikes. We could also get to Kapa'a for grocery shopping fairly quickly.
We didn't have any problems with bugs (surprisingly, since the screens aren't completely tight everywhere). A few little ones here or there, but nothing to make us feel uncomfortable at all.
We only met Christel on our way out, but she was delightful. Shook checked in on us and made us feel very welcome while she was away.
We would love to return to this spot someday!
We absolutely LOVED our stay in Christel's beach bungalow! It was exactly what we were looking for... A little dream come true. Our highlight was falling asleep at night to the sound of crashing waves and rain on the tin roof... Simply heavenly. The cool breeze coming through the screen walls was the cherry on top. We can't wait to go back to Kauai, and would love to stay there again. Christel was a great host and we felt 100% at home. Also, as mentioned in previous reviews, the shower was an exciting experience. Hot to cold to hot depending on how far to the right or left the water handle was pushed.. No in between really. We found it to be perfectly fine though, and rather refreshing actually. (We also loved the delicious shampoo and conditioner that was provided!) We are hoping to return to Kauai again in January and really can't wait! :)
Christel is a great host. All the supplies for a comfortable stay were provided or Christel provided them on a short notice. She was very accommodating within her means when we have requested earlier checkin and late checkout. The best part about the bungalow is the location-> Moloaa bay is fantastic with waves and calm areas. At times we had the beach all by ourselves and had a blast. We had rain during couple of nights and it was nostalgic for me to hear the sounds of the rain drops all around with the open window layout.
Tips for future potential residents
1) The first time, try to arrive when there is a light. It could be tricky to find.
2) Be prepared to see insects and mosquitoes. I am no fan of either of them but if the thought gives you creeps this is not the place. To avoid them I have tried the following things
Left the bathroom light on during the night since dealing with sight of cockroaches when I turn on the late late in the night would bother my sleep. Christel, I suggest an LED light here so it is low on the electricity bill
Mosquito protection - We used badger organic Anti Bug Balm Citronella and Rosemary liberally and burnt the citronella candles that the previous residents left over. They seemed to work 95% of the time.
Cockroaches - Don't leave edible food around. Put it in the refrigerator. We also used catnip around our luggage and that seemed to deter if any. It is non-toxic for humans and pets. We only saw one cockroach during our entire stay of 4 days in the bungalow! The neighborhood cat came to check us out once most likely because of that :D
3) Make sure you enjoy the beach. It is fascinating to see the crabs dig holes early on in the morning. The location is just fantastic
Overall I would not hesitate to recommend this location to singles and couples. The good things going for it are the open layout, rustic feel and location. Not knowing the neighborhood made me feel a bit insecure with a young one and we just had the young one sleep with us to get around it. She did enjoy watching the snails, the roosters and lizards outside the bungalow that came out during the night when we turned the lights on
Christel was great. The house was just as advertised. It is a rustic-style place, but with just the right amount of amenities to feel right at home. The short walk to the beach and the paddleboard Christel encouraged me to borrow were huge perks. Also, when i left the house to do some camping during my final days on the island, Christel immediately offered to lend me her camp stove, which was so helpful. She and the place are both great! Highly recommended.
Some reviews mention cockroaches - I did not see any. It's a jungle-like setting, but there were no bugs in the house during my stay.
Christel was lovely and gave some great tips for things to see on the island. The place was what we were expecting - cozy and open air with a basic kitchen set up. Had a wonderful cottage or cabin feel, Hawaii style. We kept mosquito coils burning because a few buggers snuck in.
The neighbourhood is away from the beaten tourist paths, which is great if privacy and a more local experience is what you're looking for (we were!) The nearby beach is lovely and not at all crowded.
I'd definitely recommend, with the caveat that you should be comfortable with a rustic/open-air feel.
We were quite happy when we saw the place at first because it seemed like a nice little hut in the jungle and that it has in inddor outdoor feel, but what you have to know here is that it is 20 to 25 minutes from restaurants and other main shops and drugstores. The toilet works pretty badly, the shower does not work properly: it burns you then it becomes cold and goes on and on. Plus, the biggest disagrement is : IT IS FULL OF CUCARACHAS (cockroaches). Some people don't mind, because it is nature. But we did! When eating at the table and something plays with your finger and it is a big cockroach.... or you go in the bathroom at night and.... you see them all over the place it is disgusting. Overall we would not really recommend that place.
We had a great time in Christel's beach bungalow - comfy bed, rain sounds through the screens, and easy walking access to an amazing little beach. If you stay here, take advantage of it as much as you can - it's a hidden gem.
We really enjoyed our stay at the hideaway beach bungalow. The surrounding area was beautiful and perfect for hiking around Moloa'a Bay to view sunrise or the stars, or for relaxing on the beach. The yard at the bungalow is also lovely and the street and neighborhood are secluded and quiet. Great place but don't be surprised by some insects inside, a weak-flushing toilet, and crowing roosters at 5am through the screen walls. We would definitely rent this place again though! :)
Had a great stay in this cute bungalow! Christel is very nice and accommodating. Don't forget your bug spray, as there were many mosquitoes - at least when we were there in March. Very short walk from the beach. Large yard to enjoy.
LOVE this place! I'm so happy we got to call this place home for the last week. It was absolutely perfect for us. The bed is comfortable, and I absolutely love the fact that all the walls in the main room are mesh. We didn't have any trouble with the wind pushing the rain through and it got really rainy at nights. So nice to fall asleep to the rain onthe roof and wake up to the sound of waves. I also loved Moloaa Bay location because it is close to Kapaa and the east and also close to Hanalei and the north. As we were driving down the road it felt like we were going back in time... all the houses are cute and not mansion-y. It felt mellow and local. We lived in Costa Rica for 3 years and this reminded us of that, Super happy we chose this place. Such a short walk to the beach, I wish we could've had more time! Internet didnt work the first day or two but started working and was really fast, even when it was raining! There are a LOT of mosquitos in this area which feasted on me, but I'd rather have mosquito bites than spray poison al over my body, but maybe bring a citrinella candle if you don't want to get bitten. Christel was super nice and friendly. House was clean, beautiful, big garden. Very private and secluded. LOVE Moloaa Bay and I love this house, highly recommended
