For shopping is Kilauea town about 10 minutes away and Kapaa 15 minutes away. ( by car) For wonderful smoothies, breakfast and lunch drive up the hill 5 minutes for the Moloaa Fruitstand.
Moloaa Bay is a minute walk away and is perfect for snorkling and swimming on both ends. There is also a beautiful hiking area up the cliffs.
The microclimate in this particular area is unique. It has much less rain then Kilauea and Kapaa, and even a little further up the hillside. Pretty much always nice and sunny but never to hot.
Beautiful quaint neighborhood. Quiet pristine beach. Beautiful hiking on the cliffs.
Bus stop about 35 minute walk up the hill.
Christel made us feel right at home. She was there waiting when we pulled up, and showed us the cottage. She lives across the street and told us to contact her if we needed anything. She was very welcoming. She told us about the close walk to Moloaa Bay, and told us we are free to have mangoes that grow on the property.
Christel's bungalow was an adorable retreat tucked away from the highway. It was a great location, and also right next to a secluded beach. The bungalow walls are mosquito netting, which let us hear the peaceful rain and also the birds waking up on the morning. Christel was responsive throughout our stay, even though she was away. Hope we can stay again with with her!
Christel's Beach Bungalow was the perfect place for us. We've traveled extensively around the world and like to stay in places that are unique, laid-back, and somewhat off the beaten path. The bungalow filled the bill. It is rustic to be sure, but if you like waking up to the sound of surf and roosters in a screened-in pavilion outside of which all you can see are native flora pressed against the screens, then you will like the Beach Bungalow.
For our money the location couldn't have been any better. A five minute walk takes you to a secluded cove in which swimming is safe and sunbathing is required. A half hour walk up a lush valley lane heading inland we found a wonderful stupa that was a great place to meditate, and further north the small hamlet of Kilauea was a good place to eat and shop. And Hanalei was only a little further north, and a great place to watch sunsets .
Christel herself was as laid-back as her bungalow, respectful of our privacy, and friendly.
We loved our stay at the Hawaiian Hideaway Beach Bungalow! Christel made us feel very welcome and managed to both be very accessible and respect our privacy. The location is incredible. The beach is never crowded, has fantastic swimming and snorkeling, and has great shade trees for taking breaks from the sun. We hiked up on the ridge and saw Albatross above and sea turtles below. We went all over the island and in the end realized Moloa'a Beach is our favorite on Kauai.
The bungalow is on a lovely, spacious lot, with its own giant mango tree and beautiful flowers and birds everywhere; and it's truly a 3 minute walk to the beach. Even better, you can hear the ocean at night because "as the crow flies" the beach is 1 minute away.
We cooked all our meals in the bungalow and found the set-up very functional (two burners, toaster oven, and large fridge and freezer). Everything we needed kitchen-wise was there. Likewise, the bed, bedding, towels, and rugs were all really clean and comfy.
We didn't have any issues with mosquitoes or any other bugs - except for ants! The ants were harmless but by the end we were happy to say goodbye to them :) I think it's just a function of the jungle setting and the screened-in nature of the bungalow.
As others have said, the bathroom sink didn't work -- but since it was another 3 feet to the kitchen sink we really didn't care about this.
One other thing to mention is that we found the small bedroom to have a strong mildew smell. Again, I think it's just the jungle setting having its way with a small, enclosed space. Because I'm very sensitive to mildew, we just left the door to that room closed and it was completely fine! I also see that other guests slept in there and/or had their children sleep there (and in the same month we were there), so this is probably something that only would affect someone mildew-sensitive like me.
All in all - we had a wonderful time and are very grateful for our stay at the bungalow! Mahalo, Christel :)
The Beach Bungalow is a wonderful Hawaiian experience unlike anything I've ever experienced before. It's very rustic, and it's the closest thing you can get to camping in the jungle. If you like the outdoors, and you like camping (and want to give sleeping outside a go), this place is for you! The fruit stand up the street is truly wonderful (try the acai bowl, banana bread and smoothies). There are also boogie boards and plenty of towels for your use.
Like the other reviews said, the bathroom sink didn't work, and there were a couple openings in the screens that some bugs got in. Nothing a outdoorsy person can't handle!
Christel's hideaway was just as described. From the pictures it looks like the room is little more exposed BUT I can say that there is more than enough privacy between the bushes and the greenery that border the entire plot. This is a rustic and charming place. We brought our 16 month old and loved having the separate bedroom for her to get a good night's sleep. The beach is 2 minutes away and is very quiet with a small and shallow lagoon for the little ones.
Christel checked in once and was happy to answer questions.
It was hard for us to find the place the first night (in the dark), you have to make a right turn at the fork to pull into the driveway. Once it was light we realized our mistake.
P.S. Skip the Safeway in Lihue and head to the BIG SAVE in Kapa'a or the amazing farmer's market (changes locations everyday): (website hidden)
