La Chapelle is a fully restored chapel dating back to the 13th century. The property also includes other farm buildings (corps de ferme) that stand on one of the 'route de St Jacques de Compostelle' or way of St James.
The Chapelle consists of a large living room with original stone walls and feature beams connected to a kitchen and dining room via a one meter thick keystone archway. The flooring is tiled throughout. There is also a separate toilet with a unique recessed hand-basin feature on the lower level.
The hand crafted staircase leads to the upper level bedrooms and bathroom with restored chestnut flooring in both bedrooms and a recycled railing completing the restoration. The first bedroom consists of stone walls and high beam ceilings. The second bedroom is larger, sleeping up to 3 people. Both rooms are light and airy with beautiful views over the countryside.
A unique stonewall frames the front eastern courtyard, great for when the heat is at its peak in the afternoon. At the rear is the terrace with views across the Cluzelou valley, all under a pergola, perfect spot to sip wine and relax at the end of the day.
Interesting facts: The Lot-et-Garonne area has the highest concentration of Bastide towns (42). La Fondouce is within the cluster of well known Bastides. (Monflanquin, Montpazier, Villeréal, Vianne, Puymirol.) The property is thought to contain underground tunnels and caves under the main house (yet to be excavated) that date back to the 'Cathare Period'. There is an original track running next to the well that was thought to be one of the original route to Santiago de Compostela during the Christian pilgrimages. (Way of St James).
The property is on the border of the Dordogne area, and close to many historic towns such as Monflanquin, Monpazier, Eymet, Villereal and Issigeac.
