Old Style Hawaii in Kula

House - Private room · Lower Kula Road, Kula, HI 96790, United States

Cristina & Matt live in upcountry Kula on Maui. 45 min. from Haleakala National Park. Within walking distance of a Post Office, Morihara store, Kula Bistro restaurant, and the Maui Bus system. Incredible views of the island. 2 cats and 11 chickens on the property. Room off the porch and bathroom. Outdoor shower. Clean.

The Space

This is an old farmhouse from the 1930's. Old ranch style Hawaii. Truly old style Hawaii. No hot water inside. Low water pressure. Heated shower in utility shed outside. We have lived on this acre of land for 9 years. We really don't have neighbors, and have access to over 200 acres of untouched Maui. Matt is an artist, and the house is filled with his vibrant artwork, as the house is also the studio and gallery. We are avid runners, and love to cook at home. Magnificent view of the central valley of Maui; panoramic view from Paia to Makena, Haleakala to west Maui, three islands visible from porch.

Guest Access

Wireless internet, outdoor utility shed shower, washer with line dry. Common kitchen. Room right off the porch with your own door. Second door of your room goes into shared bathroom. Scroll down to Extra Details under House Rules for more on access.

Interaction with Guests

Matt and I work from home. If you are into art, running or cooking we can hang out. We can make recommendations on stuff to do on Maui; Matt was born and raised on Maui. Yet you can always have your privacy when staying with us.

The Neighborhood

We are in the center of the small town of Kula. Walking distance from little store Moriharra, and Kula Bistro restaurant. Driving distance from two gas stations, and a Post Office. Convenience and beauty.

Getting around

In January 2013 the Maui Bus added a route up to Kula. There are two stops in town. One at the Kula Community Center, just below our house, and one at Moriharra Store. Walking distance 10 minutes to store, bus stops, and Kula Bistro. Store. We've had a guest that was able to rent a scooter, and have it dropped off below the house.

Other Things to Note

Matt and Cristina both teach, and coach. When we go for a run guests are invited to come. Matt is also a professional artist. His studio and gallery are in the house, and he works from the house. Art lessons available.

  • I really want to keep this a secret but I totally enjoyed my stay at Old Style Hawaii. It is truly as stated - a step back in time. The hosts are very thoughtful and willing to answer any questions.

  • Matt and Christina were great hosts - showing us around the house (and all of Matt's amazing artwork). We cooked dinner in their kitchen (which has everything you'll need for a quick meal). The guest bedroom is comfortable and attached to the bathroom. As mentioned in the listing, the shower is outside and while a bit cold, it was very refreshing. The location was perfect for driving up to see the sunrise at Haleakala (~35-45 mins) and then later exploring the rest of the park. Would highly recommend, Christina and Matt were great.

  • Cristina and Matt are awesome! They were both so sweet and accommodating when we stayed with them. The house is very rustic like the description states; it is also very charming.

The sunsets were amazing to watch from the porch and the shower view is awesome! We loved admiring all of Matt's artwork throughout the house. - we even bought a print at the grocery store down the road. Kula gets a bit chilly at night in the winter so you may want some warm clothes if you are staying during that season.

The cats an chickens were fun to hang with too!

We would certainly want to stay here again someday. Thanks Cristina and Matt!

  • I stayed with Cristina and Matt in upcountry Kula in November 2013. They are awesome hosts! Very accommodating, friendly and knowledgeable about the island. The room is super comfy, great bed, plenty of electricity and outstanding views of the countryside and most of the island. I particularly liked the "outdoors" shower (it's really enclosed but it has a nice sky roof and windows so you can enjoy views of the moon if you shower at night). The whole upcountry vibe was cool, I loved the location of their home right in the middle of the island. A great base to explore both sides of Maui and very convenient to get up to Haleakala (especially at 5am!). Only 20 mins from the north coast and you can pass through Makawao and get some mind-blowing donuts and cream puffs at Komodo's Bakery which is not too far away. Matt & Cristina told me about some great spots on the island and were happy to chat anytime. The cats and chickens were friendly too. :) I'd definitely stay here again. Aloha!

  • Cristina and Matt were nice hosts. They offered the access to their kitchen and they provided table cloth and flowers for our dinner with a view. The view is simply fantastic! Our stay was very relaxing. The environment is very quiet. It was very pleasant to walk to the general store and to the restaurant in Kula. The shower in the shed is the shower with the best view in the world. The room, the shared bathroom and the shower in the shed were very simple, as advertized. Great moments in Hawaii.

We had a very pleasant stay.

  • My stay was Cristina & Matt was totally unique, and all around awesome. This is a great place for getting off the beaten path and exploring the upcountry area, especially if for some hiking/running. They were both so generous and welcoming, sharing of both their home, and their time. Cristina, was very organized and made get there and getting about very easy, and Matt graciously shared his advice on running, and even some painting lessons with me.

Running Coach, Teacher, Artwork
Matt and I like to run, bike, and swim in the ocean. Music is on when we're working from home. We listen to everything from classical to dj mashup mixes. We cook all our meals at home. Watching movies, and shows online is a nightly routine. We have had runners stay at the house, and of course our friends. We want to share the beautiful place we live, and like hosting temporarily here on Airbnb. As guests we are clean, friendly, and busy.
