About this listing
Enjoy sitting on the porch, watching the boats go by, or stroll to many of the restaurants and shops within walking distance. You won't need your car once you get here, but if you do we have a parking spot to make it easy to come and go.
Quaint apartment is located on Balboa Island, three houses from the beach along the South Bay Front. It's minutes to Marine Avenue shops and restaurants, the ferry that takes you to the Balboa peninsula, as well as many bike, kayak, paddle board and boat rentals. We're also:
- 7 miles to John Wayne Airport
- 7 miles to 73 and 405 freeways
- 8 miles to Huntington Beach, "Surf City," to the north
- 9 miles to Laguna Beach to the south
- 20 miles to Disneyland
Our apartment is one of the first houses built on the island and probably the oldest remaining. It was built by our great, great grandfather who built it for his four daughters--one apartment for each. Over 100 years later our family still enjoys it.
We also have an upper unit if this one is booked (please search Airbnb for "Historic Upper Apt on Balboa Island" if interested.
Originally restored, this is a unique apartment (and hard to describe!). It's a studio apartment, of sorts, with a living room (with Murphy bed and sofa bed), dining room (with the main bed, a Hollywood bed that rolls in to form a couch in the daytime), kitchen, bath, front porch and parking space out back. The kitchen is equipped - not gourmet - and has no dishwasher. Take a look at the pictures - they do a better job than I do! The bathroom has a claw foot tub and shower. We provide wireless internet capable of downloading movies via your Netflix account, or other sites. We also have a small TV with antenna that receives some local channels. Please note, we DO NOT have cable TV, but you're at the beach with plenty to entertain you!
The house has a small covered front porch with patio furniture. As mentioned, a parking space is provided behind the house and has plenty of space in the side-yard to store any bikes or kayak you may bring. We have beach chairs and matts for you to use.
Because the apartment is small, we like to rent to two people max. We provide linens, towels, blankets and pillows. While Newport Beach has mild weather year round, it can get cold in the winter and hot in the summer. We supply a portable space heater and extra blankets for the cold and a fan and windows that open wide to catch a breeze in the heat. But I remind you, you're at the beach, go enjoy!
If you haven't been to this area, there are endless things to do: bike, boat, sail, walk, surf, lay on the beach, shop, dine--all without getting in a car!

Gary was very communicative prior to and during my stay. He also was very kind in extending my "out by" time because my flight home was very late in the day. The Island has many friendly people on it and was quite a quaint stay. The studio was very comfortable and the kitchen was great to cook in!
Having lived in OC and returning often this place is a Gem. A charming beach house in a great community close to the beaches, shops and airport. Gary is very attentive and helpful, not only on check-in but checking up during the stay to make sure all is going well. I will be returning.
My family's visit to Balboa Island was great. The apartment was the perfect size for myself, my husband, and our 1-year old. The location was perfect - close enough to easily access restaurants and shops and the water views from the front porch were an added bonus. Plus a quick couple minute walk to the water front was much enjoyed by my daughter who loved to people and dog watch. The apartment was fully stocked with the daily kitchen and bath necessities, which made the transition into a new space very easy for our family. The historic building's charm was also very appealing us. As noted in the property description, properties on the island are in close proximity so some neighbor noise is experienced, but we had no real issues and everyone around us was very welcoming and friendly. Gary was very responsive to our questions leading up to the trip. We can't wait for a return trip and would recommend the rental for a couple or small family.
Our host, Gary, stayed in touch with us concerning information needed. We found the facility just as it was described and it fit our needs, totally. The bungalow was well within walking distance to places of interest yet off the beaten path enough to be quiet.
We will recommend this location to others.
This little piece of paradise in the midst of busy Orange County is the perfect get-away and yet very convenient to everything in the area. Balboa Island is beautiful! I loved the security of the island—you can safely walk any time of day or evening—always lots of locals and visitors out and about. The apartment is just as described—historic and charming—with lots of interior renovations and everything necessary for an extended stay. Gary is a great host—very responsive via email. I look forward to a return visit!
I had an amazing time at the apartment. It was as advertised - simple, convenient, clean and in a great location. I used it as my work space for the week while there and found it very easy to come and go. The neighborhood was quiet and neighbors friendly.
This was the perfect little slice of paradise! My mom and I flew in for a long weekend, neither of us ever having been to Balboa/Newport Beach before, and had a perfect stay in this apartment. Gary was very easy to communicate with and prompt in returning my emails and messages. He was even kind enough to warn us beforehand of some construction happening in the apartment above (which, I believe, should be ending soon). When we arrived, we found it to be clean, cozy, and with all the comforts of home. The apartment is a comfortable size for two adults; we had no problems with space or feeling cramped but we also hardly spent any time in it - there is so much to do nearby!
We loved being able to drink our morning coffee on the front porch with the ocean in view, and walk less than a block to the waterfront to admire the sea lions, paddleboarders, and boats going by. It's quite near the ferry to the Balboa peninsula (just around the corner!), making access to the beach a breeze. The beach chairs, umbrella, and cooler were also a great touch and made beach days very, very comfortable. We appreciated having a designated parking space behind the building, as street parking could be difficult to find during the weekend. Also, the houses on the island are close to one another but even so, it was never too noisy even with all of the windows open to let in the glorious ocean breezes.
We had a fantastic time and were completely charmed by this apartment and island - looking forward to a return visit!!

About the Host, Gary
We are looking to share our family beach house with people that will treat it well and enjoy it as much as we do.
This house has been in our family for over 100 years and means a lot to us. Thanks for taking a look.
My sister, Cindy, and I tag team in renting, so you may get a message from either of us.
