About This Listing
We restored a 17th century home into a 7 room guest house where we love to welcome guests. We are at the heart of old Tunis -Medina- walking distance from many historical sites, restaurants, cafes and craft shops.
Our home was built in the 17th century, which we bought and restored. Restoration work took 3 years, and we just terminated in August of 2013. We are passionate about heritage revival, and hence we kept all ancient poles, tiles and ceiling craftsmanship. All furniture is either vintage or handcrafted by Tunisian artisans and artists coming from all over the country.
We are strategically located in the old 'medina' of Tunis surrounded by museums, art galleries, medrassas and souks. As soon as you leave our home, you can wonder around in the little paths where each turn hides a secret from history.
We are social entrepreneurs; as we want to encourage tourism with a socio-economic edge by creating opportunities for micro and small businesses based in the medina; artisans, traders, tour guides, and chefs (mothers) that mastered their 'cuisine' by cooking for their families...
Our home is a great escape for those that want to enjoy the Tunisian lifestyle with a touch of luxury. The house is calm, with a great roof terrace that overlooks the whole city and plenty of reading/writing spaces.
If you want to discover all of Tunisia, we could also arrange tours/cars/recommend sites upon request...
We provide breakfast to our guests and we have wifi access almost all over the home.
Upon request and at an additional fee, we could organise transportation and meals at home.
Interaction with Guests
We interact with our guests to ensure they got what they needed for their trip and could share with them a meal or a tour.
We are at the heart of Tunis old town -medina- at walking distance there is the souk (market) full of little shops selling crafts, perfumed, textiles, antiques, jewellery and souvenir products. Around us there are also many historical sites, such as palaces, medrassas, mosques and artisan workshops. At lunch time the medina is very animated with plenty of restaurants and cafes.
We are about 3min walking from Kasbah, where taxis, buses and public parking are readily available.
Since we are at the old town, the roads are narrow, and sometimes taxis prefer not to drive all the way to our home door; but if you call us we could explain to the taxi how to get all the way to our entrance.
Other Things to Note
Upon request we could organise travel around the country or tour guides.
The reservation was canceled 6 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.
Great place with beautiful rooms, rooftop, and very attentive staff. Highly recommended.
Leila's home is beautiful! Leila and her staff are so welcoming and helpful. They make you feel right at home and help with any questions about restaurants or travel. The house is perfect with local art, attention to detail and lots of history. There many cozy places to read a book (and great books too!) and drink tea. The neighbourhood is lovely and lots of fun to explore. I would stay here again anytime. Thank you Leila for your warm welcome.
The hotel situated in the Medina, a few minutes walk from the Souks. It is a traditionally Tunisian hotel and each room is individual.
We were made to feel very welcome, from the time we arrived to the time we left. The hotel had a calm atmosphere, the staff were friendly and quietly attentive.
We appreciated that the hotel was able to provide on request an excellent meal for 14 people.
Leila was very helpful via email prior to arrival. The home was beautiful and was perfectly located for exploring Tunis and the Medina.
Other staff on hand during the stay were also available and always happy to help.
Would recommend to those looking to stay in the old town of Tunis.
We spent a week at Dar Ben Gacem and loved it. The hotel is beautifully decorated, and it really is an oasis in the bustling medina. We loved having our breakfast tucked away in the 'pavilion' on the roof. Leila and her staff, especially Ayman, are very knowledgable and are always on hand to help you with your plans. The hotel is walking distance from lots of good restaurants in the medina, and is a great base to explore Tunis from. We'd highly recommend Dar Ben Gacem, and we will be back!
