My wife, daughter and I visited Grenada for Christmas and New Year and stayed at Smithys garden flat. This is a lovely two bedroomed self contained apartment set in a beautiful garden in which fresh fruit such as mangos and bananas grow in abundance. Our host Anne lives in the main house next door and could not have been more welcoming and friendly. She was extremely helpful when we needed anything sorting out from car hire to boat tours. As a visitor to Smithys you are welcome to be a part of the family or to be independant. The choice is yours. In our case we mixed with Anne and her family quite a bit and were even invited to a large family gathering on Christmas day at a fantastic villa with spectacular views and swimming pool. Anne's extended family and friends were also extremely welcoming and we ate from a splendid buffet lunch of traditional Christmas fayre. We didn't have a car booked in advance and Anne and her daughter Claire very kindly drove us to the beach for the first couple of days. The flat is located in Mourne Jaloux, a nice suberb of Grande Anse, and is about a 10 minute drive from the town and about 20 minutes from St George's. I would recommend car hire for flexibility and for touring but public mini busses are modern and run very regularly and taxis are readily available. On a number of mornings Anne or her gardener brought us fresh bananas or mangos straight from the tree. it was the nicest fruit I have tasted for a long time especially the mangos. there are really nice beaches close by and again Anne provided us with great recommendations for these and for restaurants and bars which are plentiful. We visited for 10 days but that was about 4 days too short. We will most likely visit the island again in the future as we didn't manage to see everything we wanted. If and when we do we will certainly stay at Smithys again. Thank you Anne for helping to make our stay extremely enjoyable and hassle free and one we will remember for a long time.
Up in the high grounds of Morne Jaloux, Anne's garden apartment is a very nice calm two-bedroom apartment. The hostess was very friendly and knowledgeable about the island. The service provided was exquisite, though we should have taken more advantage of the very friendly help. Our privacy was respected at all times and both the hostess and the service lady were readily available on demand.
The hostess can arrange tours for you, which I highly recommend - bring hiking boots. The locals are very friendly and their rapport with the hostess means they will go the extra mile to help you - all you have to do is ask the hostess and she will arrange it.
There's a TV, one of the rooms has an AC, the kitchen is very well structured and the furniture for the apartment is perfect. The lounging area overlooks a beautiful garden too, wins friendly gardener.
A bus ride to the city centre is very cheap and not long at all. The island has a lot to offer, I wish I stayed longer.
I will return to the island, though I suspect as it will be with a bigger group, to book a villa also owned by the hostess - look out for that bring advertised soon.
