This is a restored village house in a 'Village Classe' in the heart of the Parc Natural de Haut Languedoc. On 3 floors with the garage taking up the whole of the ground floor. The 1st floor has an open lounge/kitchen/dinning room. There is a bathroom on this level too. The 2nd floor has two bedrooms, one with shower room, and a mezzanine lounge area that can be used for additional sleeping.
The kitchen is fully equipped with dishwasher, electric oven and hob, microwave and new cupboards in what the French call 'American' style. The dinning area seats 6 and has open French doors onto a small Juliet balcony. The lounge has LED TV with satellite tuner directed to the UK. (French TV will be installed once the new TNT digital system arrives in the village) There is wifi available.
The garage has a summer kitchen and can be used to have impromptu meals etc. with the open doors you can feel as if you have the whole of the outdoors inside the house. There isn't a garden but you do have the entire square and the river is less than 250m away to sit beside and enjoy the day.
One of the reasons I bought the house was the views I have from inside it. They form the backdrop to many happy evenings entertaining friends and listening to the music festivals and other summer entertainments. This is a tranquil village and, as is so typical in rural France, it comes alive in moments flashing with colour and vibrancy only to meld away back into the cream coloured stones and resume it's gentle slumber.
The bedrooms are arranged as a double with en suite and a twin bedded room which easily makes a double. The mezzanine has a convertible L-shaped sofa which can be used for impromptu guests.
The village has a bar and 2 restaurants but there are many other's within a short walk or drive, some I would highly recommend and all are good value. There is a baker's van every morning and a grocers van on Tuesdays, but there are big supermarkets in the next village (3K) and excellent shops, Including the one visited by Rick Stein when he stopped by to sample the best boudin (black sausage a little like black pudding) in the area. Faugeres wines are only 8K away as well as more local varieties and my partner always comments on the size of the supermarket's wine area given that it is a 'small' French area. The wines are excellent here and one can still buy a good quality red for around 4€.
Villemagne has it's own book fair and produce market on a Sunday in the summer. (At least May to Sept). There is one particular local producer who has the most delicious old variety tomatoes and does boxes of produce out of the main season, if requested.
Lamalou Les Bains is the centre of local culture and entertainment. It is just over the hill and provides everything from outdoor performances,in previous years this has been everything from Les Miserables to Ballet. There is music in the streets every Thursday night. It has Belle Epoch villas on the streets and the best Salon de The (tea shop) I have ever encountered. Nicknamed 'Alain's' it is really called Temps du Thé. The patisserie are simply the best!!!
Still close enough for a day trip are Montpellier, Carcassonne, Beziers (nearest airport at 35 mins away) and the coast. In between you have Gorges d"Heric, Rocquebrun and water sports on the Orb. While it helps to have a car it isn't too far to the railway station in Bedarieux and we have lots of friends wiling to give lifts to and from the airport, it's always helpful to make a little gift though.
One of the best things about the area is the network of single track roads to wander with only the occasional car or van to watch for while checking out the butterflies and wildlife. Take care on Wednesdays though as the local hunters are often out looking for wild boar.
Other local amenities include the open air swimming in the municipal pool in Lamalou les Bains, men will need to remember not to wear short type swimwear though, only Speedos are allowed. Swimming is also possible from many of the beaches on the river banks and at Serignan Plage, which is in a protected part of the coast.
There is a local gym (Salle Masculation) within 5k where you can regain, or maintain your muscularity and pay on a daily or weekly basis. I'll give you further details if you feel this is something you would like to pursue.
2012 was my very first year for offering my house to people, previously I had reserved it to friends, and I have been delighted with the wonderful people who have stayed with me. Many have offered kind and rewarding comments, and some have become friends in their own right. As this is my home, which I'm happy to share, I hope you will feel that it is your home too.
If there is anything you want to know drop me a line and I will try to help as much as I can.

My family had a nice relaxed stay in Paul's lovely house. It was great to experience the small village and surrounding countryside.
Paul was very easy to communicate with and it all went very smoothly.
Paul has a fantastic place! Wow! Beautiful home, fantastic kitchen and amazing views! The stove proved excellent with the many meals we cooked. Huge windows leave the place well lit and nice and breezy. The furniture is excellent and comfortable! Great beds, great bathrooms!
The area is amazing and gorgeous. Very tranquil!!! There is near nothing for going out unless you drive to other towns and not much going on, but this is a wonderful place to bring some food and get away for a few days!!!
The surrounding area is fantastic, too! St. Gervais was a very cool find! We wish we had had time to hike up to the castle, but still enjoyed cruising the town. And the Gorge was excellent as well! It is a beautiful place to hike and has nice places to lay out by the river!
Paul's house was clean and charming and had everything we needed for a very pleasant stay. This is one of the few places where the photographs do not do the place justice as it was nicer than we expected. The kitchen was well equipped and he had even left us some lovely local cheese to sample. The first night the church bells disturbed my sleep but after that I used ear plugs and slept soundly. The area is well worth exploring with lots of interesting things to do within an easy drive and it was wonderful to get away from the crowds of tourists in the August heat. I'd love to go back to the area to explore further.
My boyfriend and me had a wonderful week in Villemagne. Paul´s house is a lovely place to relax. The kitchen is perfectly equipped and has everything you need to prepare a delicious meal. Also, you can watch great DvD´s or just hang around in the cozy living room. The bed ist comfortable and has a trendy bathroom ensuite.
The surroundings of Villemagne offer a variety of things to do: We went to the beach, visited some cities, did some hiking in the gorge d´orb and went swimming in some beautiful rivers. I can definately recommend Paul´s place. He was a perfect host and the communication with him worked without any problems.
This is a really great spot in a very charming small village. Paul is a great host, incredibly helpful and responsive. We stayed as two couples and the space worked out perfectly, the kitchen is a great space to work in, there is a GIGANTIC grocery store about a 15 minute drive away, vineyards galore in the region, and a fabulous Sunday market right outside the backdoor. A gourmand's dream!
It is a beautiful house. A mixture of design and tradition with all the details that you could need for a relaxed and confortable weekend! Paul is a very kind host. He reccomend us some interesting places for a romantic dinner, a delicious 'petit soirée' or some ' promenades' with amazing panoramic views, etc. We reccomend it specially for couples.
Paul has a lovely home in a beautiful area of the country. There's so much to do, and he provided an extensive, and extremely helpful, list of recommendations. We shopped at markets, visited some charming villages and cities, and experienced some stunning nature. Paul is a very thoughtful host; the month we spent at his place was a peaceful retreat, and a special time. Thanks!
We had a fantastic experience staying at Paul's house, the only reason the experience doesn't get 5 stars is because, for us, the location felt isolated but of course that is just because of our personal circumstances, not because of the house which is just as advertised, with everything in it that we needed. There are lovely walks around the village and surrounding country, including to a 12th century bridge and by the river. Paul was very helpful, staying in email and phone contact and responding to enquiries promptly. He popped in for a visit also which was appreciated. We drove over to the fortified Cite de Carcassonne one day which was a lovely drive through the hills with the leaves changing colour. Overall, we enjoyed the visit very much.
Comfortable and tasteful, highly recommended. Car essential, shops are 2.5 km away.
Paul is absolutely great; couldn't ask for a better host. And the house is perfect: a classic old stone building with a modern interior. I stayed for a full month and found the house to be pleasant in every way: clean, comfortable, efficient. The bed is really comfortable, and the kitchen is a fun, easy, practical place to cook. Paul’s house is located in the center of Villemagne, next to the church and the cafe; it literally sits in the heart of the delightful little village. The river is an easy stroll, just a minute away, through tiny lanes, bordered by lovely old stone homes. Throughout the Languedoc, the roads are in excellent condition, making for easy access to many nearby towns and attractions. This is a wonderful place in every way; highly recommended. (For an exceptionally good dinner, be sure to visit Ochre-Rouge - one of Paul’s recommendations - in Herepian, another tiny village just five minutes away.)
