Charlotte's beautiful house in Languedoc-Roussillon, in the south west of France, is in the small friendly town of Fourques. The town is surrounded by vineyards and orchards and overlooked by Mount Canigou, one of the highest mountains in the Pyrenees. Whatever time of year, the house is a welcoming and homely base from which to enjoy the pleasures of the surrounding area.
The house was originally a "grange" or a barn built over one hundred years ago - fully renovated into a large, comfortable home with original beams and thick stone walls. It is furnished and equipped to a very high standard. There are four good sized bedrooms: two double bedrooms, one twin bedded room, and one room with a single bed and cot. There are two shower rooms.
Ground floor - a large fully fitted, well equipped kitchen. Plenty of storage space for groceries and wine.
A very spacious living room with comfortable sofas and chairs, dining table for 8 and French doors leading onto the walled garden.
First floor - double bedroom with French windows and en suite shower room, twin bedded room with a further bedroom leading off housing a single bed and cot. Second shower room. Landing with stairs to the mezannine.
Mezannine - double bedroom, with beamed ceiling and exposed stone walls.
All the bedrooms are beautifully furnished with modern wardrobes and drawers, bedside tables, lamps, rugs and mirrors. Bathrobes are supplied.
Garden - a private walled garden with large built in BBQ ideal for outside dining and relaxing. Wooden table and chairs.
The house is a real home from home. I have lovingly furnished and equipped it to a high standard to ensure that you have a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.
Chez Charlotte is in an unrivaled position in the village of Fourques, situated in the Pyrenees Orientales department of the Languedoc Roussillon region. Famous for vineyards and fruit orchards, it is an area seeped in sunshine (avg. 300 days of sunshine per year) and culture. The Pyrenees Orientales is home to 5 of the award winning "Plus beaux villages de France" and offers everything you could want from your holiday in France. Fantastic Mediterranean beaches and resorts to the east, the magical Pyrenees Mountains to the west, Spain less than 30 minutes away to the south and the amazing fairy tale medieval city of Carcassonne to the north - exploring couldn't be easier.
The people in the area are proud of their Catalan heritage with the yellow and red flag fluttering in towns and villages.
Fourques provides endless opportunities to wander and sample local delicacies, such as the areas famous sweet wine, fabulous fruits and fresh sea food.
Fourques has a bakers, two grocery shops, newsagent, pharmacy and wine shops. There is a bar attached to the bakers. The shops are a pleasant 3 minute walk away through the narrow village streets. Making the daily visit to the Boulangerie an easy stroll. In the village there is a children's playground with slide, swings and table tennis.
Thuir (only 5-10 minutes by car) has a typically Catalan atmosphere (email hidden)ly market every Saturday morning where you can buy locally produced wines, cheeses, charcuterie, fruits and vegetable. It has a variety of good restaurants, bars and shops and supermarkets. There are tennis courts and a large open air swimming pool which is open throughout the summer.
There are many lovely small villages near to the house to explore, Tresserre, Llauro, Passa, Trouillas and Terrats.
A little further afield (30 minutes) is Ceret, a beautiful old market town. It's cobbled streets are lined with majestic tall trees and hidden away are old squares where you can while away a few hours over lunch. Over the years Ceret has been very popular with artists and has a small modern art museum boasting works bu Chagall, Matisse, Dali and Picasso, to name but a few, well worth a visit. Ceret market is held on Saturdays and takes over the cobbled streets. An annual Cherry festival is held in May and the Bull run in August are just two of the many festivals held in Ceret and the surrounding villages.
Nearby are miles and miles of Mediterranean beaches - some of the best being at St Cyprien and Argelès.
Collioure is a picturesque town further south on the coast. It's narrow streets are lined with restaurants and artists shops and is one of the most beautiful coastal towns in France.
Toulouse, Barcelona, Andorra and Montpellier are all within a two and a half hour drive. Carcassonne and its magical castle is just over an hours drive north. The Salvador Dali museum in Figueres is only 45 minutes away. (You may need to book in advance if visiting in summer). Nearer, just west out of Thuir is Castelnou, a lovely old village nestling on the hillside. The views of the surrounding countryside from the fort at the top of the village are fantastic.

Chez Charlotte is amazing! Located in a small village, there is plenty of things to visit in the area. Short distance from the coast and the mountains. Everything we need was provided in the house. It was very clean and had a beautiful garden. I will highly recommend this place.
I had a great time at the house. It was comfortable and clean, with everything we needed. Fourques is a very quite little town, but traveling to Ceret and Thuir is not a problem. On our way back to Barcelona we stopped by Collioure, another great place to visit while in Fourques.
Thanks for a great weekend.
