Mixed bag. I feel users accustomed to North American standards should be warned that the glowing reviews for Lodging House are somewhat misleading. It's possible that we were there at a particularly bad (busy) time (mid to late May), but the facility was anything but quiet. There were a large number of mostly South American twenty and thirty something global wanderers in residence. All were extremely friendly and engaging, BUT, they also liked to party noisily--pretty much all night long. The shared kitchen and eating facilities were more or less continuously covered with dirty dishes from the same crowd, and those facilities were quite small and limited compared to other Hostels we have used in other countries. There is no microwave oven, and the two-burner table-top gas stove was cranky and difficult to light or adjust. While "no smoking" signs are posted prominently, many of the resident crew when we were there were heavy smokers and mostly ignored the signs. The rooms and beds were adequate and met our expectations, given the price, but the showers could not be relied upon to provide more than about two minutes of mildly lukewarm water. Admittedly, the electric shower head heaters were a technology completely unfamiliar to us, and it's possible our ignorance prevented us from using them correctly. Note that it's quite chilly in Cusco in May-June-July, and, like all buildings in the city, no heat is provided--making a cold shower quite an adventure. Note also that soap and towels are not routinely provided, although Irwin did provide towels for us when requested, at no additional charge. Having said all that, Irwin was simply superb in his efforts to handle our concerns and scheduling needs. He never failed to bend over backward to accommodate any request we made, and was unfailingly friendly and honest in his dealings with us. It should be noted that for us poor ignorant North Americans that speak little or no Spanish, Irwin's English, while light-years better than our Spanish, is marginally adequate to communicate complicated requests if you speak little or no Spanish.
Irwin (email hidden). He came to the airport to get us and paid the taxi cost. He arranged taxis for us very early on two mornings. He even walked us the few blocks to the center where there were many restaurants. We felt very safe. The beds were ok and the shower was hot. You should have an open mind and speak Spanish as Irwin speaks very little English. Overall, it was a good experience.
This is a great value, hot shower, kitchen, private room, warm bedding, great location, and lots of friendly faces. Irwin is a wonderdul person, very generous, helpful, and friendly. I would absolutely recommend this place for anyone looking for a safe and cheap place to stay in Cusco
Very hostel-like feel. Comfortable, clean, had a kitchen. I enjoyed the additional people staying in the apartment and it never got too noisy/out of hand. The bathroom was a bit basic for $15 a night compared to some other hostels/hotels but not much to complain about.
Irwin est toujours à l'écoute de la moindre attente, très sympa, qui sait être là quand il le faut ! La maison est superbe, je pensais y rester quelques jours, j'y ai presque passé un mois !
Irwin is always attentive to the slightest expectation, very friendly, knows to be there when you need it! The house is beautiful, I thought I would stay a few days, I've spent almost a month!
Irwin está siempre atento a la menor expectativa, muy amable, sabe que es allí cuando usted lo necesita! La casa es hermosa, pensé que iba a quedarse unos días, he pasado casi un mes!
Irwin was great! He was really friendly and helpful getting me things I needed during the month I stayed. I had a bedroom and almost exclusive use of the kitchen, bathroom and laundry (hand-washing) areas. It was really quiet most of the time. The shower is warm enough. There are lots of plants and the house feels open and light. The kitchen and living room are bit old, but still cozy. There were dishes, one pan, a tea pot and some silverware to use.
The only problem I encountered staying here was when the downstairs neighbors were fighting and kept disconnecting the internet. This happened two times during my one-month stay. This was only a problem because my job is online and I was working at the time. Otherwise, the internet was super-fast.
I really enjoyed my stay here.
There is a great little family-owned (nameless), clean, cheap restaurant up the hill about a block away that serves great food--an entire meal of soup, main dish and drink for only 4 soles! I highly recommend them. They were super friendly and nice. I ate there quite a few times. (Go out the door, turn right, cross the street, go all the way up the hill almost to the next street, blue door on the left).
