About this listing
I am completely in love with our cottage in the Southern Door County area. It is in a quiet neighborhood surrounded by the beauty of nature that Door County is so loved for. Our location is the perfect place to relax, unwind, and reset.
House on a ridge on the shore of Lake Michigan. You will not find more beautiful sunsets anywhere in the world!
It is located in the Southern Door area, 5 miles from Brussels, WI where there is a great small town grocery store & local restaurant. It is 2.5 miles to a boat launch at Sugar Creek County Park and 8 miles to a 6-lane launch at Robert M. Carmody County Park. There is plenty of space in the driveway to park your boat & trailer so bring it along. I can also recommend a great charter fisherman if you prefer someone else to do the work. And of course it is close enough to everything that Door County has to offer, just a gorgeous drive all the way up to the tip of the Peninsula, with many lighthouses to visit and state parks, specialty shops, non-chain restaurants (as well as some of the chain ones located in Sturgeon Bay).
There are 3 bedrooms, 2 of them have queen size beds and one has 2 twin beds. There is also a futon in the basement which can be used for 2 add'l guests (#7&8) for an extra fee of $10 each per night. It is on a quiet road in a small neighborhood that lines the bay side of the Lake Michigan shore. The property has a large yard to enjoy, surrounded by woods and a wonderful view of the water.
The home is stocked with pots & pans, cooking utensils, dishes, coffee pot, toaster, microwave, stove, frig. There is a gas grill that can be rolled out of the garage and a fire pit if you prefer cooking over a wood fire. We try to keep a enough wood in the pile to get you started and there are many little roadside spots to buy additional in the area. We provide the bed linens, bath towels, beach towels, even a canoe (Jill's rule: all must wear the provided life jackets and use of canoe is at your own risk). There are also a few board games and a DVD/Blu-ray player, marshmallow forks. The lake shore (not a sand beach) is accessible by a set of 45 stairs (good for a great morning workout) and it is suggested that you bring suitable shoes (water shoes work great) to protect your feet from the shells when taking a stroll.
Interaction with Guests
We enjoy meeting with guests when possible upon their arrival but part of your journey includes the beautiful drive to Door County so I like to give you the flexibility of not having to plan for a specific time. You may want to stop and enjoy unexpected sights along the way--remember to "stop and smell the roses", have a cup of coffee, or enjoy a view you rarely have time to take in during the normal rush of life. One way I try to help you start with this relaxed mind set from the moment you leave your house is to have a key lockbox. I will give you your current combination a few days before your stay so you will have access to the cottage. If you do have an approximate arrival time planned and would like me to meet you at the cottage please let me know when making an inquiry or reservation. We can make every effort possible to coordinate schedules. I also carry my cellphone to stay accessible through texts, phone calls, iMessages. I never consider a contact from a future or current guest to be a bother.
There is also a notebook, that is continually being updated, on the desk in the kitchen. It contains information which is helpful during a visit.
The cottage is on a quiet road in a peaceful neighborhood which includes a combination of seasonal cottages and homes with year round residents. We have great relationships with our neighbors and ask our guests not to have parties, loud music outside, or speeding on the road~you understand I'm sure! :)
Please clean up after your pet, respect the quiet of the neighborhood, no off-leash unless your doggie can stay right by you.
There is a limit of 3 vehicles plus a boat.
Please, only small fires in the outside firepit--the breeze from the lake can carry ash and sparks. Wood is not included but there are many locals selling bundles on the roadside. And we usually have a small supply available to get you started so you will be able to relax around the fire from the very first evening of your stay!
The indoor fireplaces are non operational at this time, they are actually insulated to conserve energy for the central air conditioning and heating.
Please leave the premises in the condition you found them or leave a $75 cleaning fee, your choice, on the honor system. Cleaning supplies are in the bathroom cupboard.
Please limit showers to a reasonable length as the home has a holding tank so keeping water usage to a normal level is very much appreciated!! If the holding tank alarm goes off you may silence per instructions in binder and please text or call me as soon as possible and I will arrange to have it pumped.
Please keep the canoe chained up whenever not in use, life preservers(provided) are required when taking the canoe out on the water. Do NOT mix alcohol & canoe use.
2 bikes are available but you will need to bring your own helmets.
A gas grill is also available for your use, please clean it when you are done.
Now just bear with me for a few short no-nos: No firearms may be discharged on the property or surrounding properties, including but not limited to target practice. A violation will be grounds for required immediate vacating of premises.
Also, and you probably feel as I do that it goes without saying, no use of illegal fireworks, no use of chain saws, no cutting down any trees on property or neighbors' land.
Only intended use of lawn furniture is allowed, please do not carry or toss it down to the shore.
Please do not build fires on the lake shore as there is dry material under the zebra mussel shells that can ignite and spread very quickly, crazy as that may sound.
This cottage is not the place for parties with loud music, drunkenness, large bonfires, and noise at a volume that the neighbors can hear, they are all great people but for many of them it is their peaceful home neighborhood!
