A sense of peace and nourishment await you in this botanical sanctuary and cozy cottage, tucked into a quiet wooded community 10 minutes from historic downtown Pittsboro, 20 minutes from Chapel Hill/Carrboro, 5 minutes from the Haw River, and convenient to Highway 15-501.
* Please note that this listing is for a room and bathroom in the cottage with access to all the amazing shared space ammenities (detailed below). Sometimes the whole cottage is available for your stay on my other Air BnB listing: "Secret Garden Cottage Getaway" (check the calendar).
As you pass through the "yarden" gate, you’ll be greeted by vibrant flower and herb gardens, the calming sound of water cascading into the koi pond, and overall natural beauty. Enjoy a wooded walk on the gravel back road; ramble the lovely creekside trail in spring through fall. In the yarden, appreciate over 100 cultivated and wild medicinal and edible plants, picnic tables, backyard hammock, the 2-person horse trough for a cool dip in the summer, and shady screened in porch with hammock from where you might glimpse the neighbors' three horses (Izy, Cali, and Babu) grazing in the adjacent pasture.
Combined with this tranquil outdoor setting, the spacious and light-filled kitchen and living room create an ideal location for rest, reading (huge library of herbalism, foraging, and sustainability titles to peruse), yoga (two mats available for your use), writing (big lovely table to spread out for research and rough drafts), cooking delicious meals (well seasoned cast iron skillets, good knives, gas stove, and lots of counter space), taking time alone or sharing space with a loved one. In cooler months relax with a hot drink in front of the wood stove. Eat and be merry knowing your composted food scraps will be happily received by three friendly resident hens (Ellie, Henrietta, and Prunella whose coop and run are nearby) and I'll drop our recycling in town. For your sipping pleasure, I provide fresh (when available) and dried herbal teas, including caffeinated options. Breakfast is self serve with fresh fruit, sprouted grain Ezekiel toast, organic butter, fresh eggs from "the ladies", or organic oatmeal with dried fruit and nuts, teas, and coffee if desired.
Your cozy private room has an attached bathroom with tub/shower (refreshing outdoor shower also available and towels provided), comfortable queen bed with high thread count cotton bedding (enjoy a soft texture with the foam topper or remove if you prefer a medium firmness), reading nook, and closet with chest of drawers. Gaze from your incline out two tall windows into the dogwood, redbud, and mulberry tree canopy with slices of sky and afternoon sun. You have your own personal window AC unit if you want to cool down with your door closed; an energy efficient AC unit in the living room is sufficient to cool the whole 900 square foot cottage, aided by ceiling fans in every room (including the porch!). Also an electric blanket that you can turn on 20 minutes before bedtime to get everything toasty cozy, then unplug once you arrive in bed.
To expand your wellness experience here at The Sanctuary, for an additional fee you may treat yourself to an empowering medicinal/edible plant walk, foraging and wild food preparation, restorative massage, one on one yoga guidance, and/or healing outdoor herbal bath. Please include questions about healing arts offerings, cost, and availability during the reservation process.

Kim was a wonderful host! She really went out of her way to make us feel welcome and was happy to answer our many questions about the area. The room was cozy and very comfortable. Thanks Kim!
cute cottage tucked away in the woods. Make sure you go into the second driveway. on Ironwood....very private, if you're into nature this is for you.... Bed was very comfortable and pillows. Zen Center down the street the street.. full kitchen at your disposal very nice.... Kim is a very warm spiritual person. I bought some fresh eggs from her hens every day... I also purchased some natural herbs... You will enjoy your stay. at the cottage and also visiting with Kim. thank you Ethel :-).
I loved the peace and quiet. The house and host were both wonderful.
I was looking for a quiet place to research, reflect, and write and Kim's cottage provided the perfect spot. There was space to read in the screened porch (including a hammock), outside, in the spacious living room, kitchen, or bedroom. There is a little used trail by a stream and into the woods just outside her home. It was an ideal spot to get some quiet work done (and learn a bit about edible wild plants while sharing a meal with the host as a bonus!).
"From the lovely tibetan flags, to the frog pond among the butterfly bushes and the chimes and herbal scented cottage; it's an oasis of serenity and a perfect place to relax and recharge. It's all a perfect prelude to a taste of the host'sr exquisite teas.
We slept heavengly among the sounds of birds and the trickling of the pond. Kim is also very mindful of her guests' privacy yet she provides helpful information on local events, restaurants and concerts. Offerings include massage therapy and yoga. The renowned Fearrington Village, located on an historic farm, is just a few minutes away. Kim's flexibility regarding check-in time was also much appreciated.
I am sharing my experience with friends and colleagues so they too can experience this magical serene sanctuary in Pittsboro, North Carolina."
my stay with kimmy at her botanical retreat was truly peaceful, truly restorative. just pulling off the main highway onto the series of roads to her home felt like i was leaving the stress of the city life behind. as i walked in to the yarden of breath taking beauty the pond and sunning frogs made me feel like i was in a tropical paradise. so i splurged and signed up for some of kimmy's body work and yummy treats. after that my room was a quiet oasis, with my own private bathroom. i slept deeply and long, woke and made breakfast with some of kimmy's chicken's eggs i purchased as well as some delicious tea. next time i am coming for longer so i can tour around pitsboro and get an herbal bath! kimmy was an incredible host and i felt very honored to share her amazing space she has created.
