This darling little studio retreat has a bedroom with a sitting area, full bathroom, and a fully stocked kitchen. It is one of three cottages on the property. It sits behind the main house, The Steinbeck Cottage, and next to The Traveler's Cottage.

The Space

The most amazing part about this little place, is that it used to belong to John Steinbeck in the early 40's. He used it as his writing studio, where he worked on The Sea of Cortez. It has been renovated to pay homage to the period and history of the property. It has a masculine and sophisticated, yet romantic feel, with accents that speak to travel and hint at a woman's touch.

Guest Access

Guests will enjoy a private outdoor sitting area, beautiful views of the garden, peaks of the ocean, and walking accessibility to downtown Pacific Grove and Cannery Row, just a half-mile away.

Interaction with Guests

For larger groups, The Writer's Studio can be rented with The Traveler's Cottage which is next door on the same property (https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1003412), and/or with the main house on the property, The Steinbeck Cottage https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1909416.

The Neighborhood

Pacific Grove offers an unparalleled quality of life. Sharing borders with the Monterey Bay, City of Monterey, Pacific Ocean, and the Del Monte Forest, our town offers breathtaking views and recreational activities. The City provides services to the community including: excellent fire, emergency, and ocean rescue services; an award-winning natural history museum; the lowest crime rate of any city in Monterey County; a nationally-recognized 18-hole golf course; a monarch butterfly habitat sanctuary; sandy beaches; and, the oldest continuously-operating lighthouse on the west coast. We are known for our small-town hospitality and friendliness in a place we simply call 'P.G.' (from The City of Pacific Grove website)

Getting around

The Writer's Studio is centrally located and a short walk from many scenic destinations. It is located a half mile from The Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row. It is also a half mile from downtown Pacific Grove. Lover's Point beach is a short one mile away as well.

Other Things to Note

The Studio is approximately 350 square feet. It is original 1920's architecture and has short doorways throughout the studio. Tall guests will need to mind there heads when passing through the rooms.

  • We had a fabulous time in the Steinbeck cottage. It is as charming as we expected it to be, with many tasteful decorative touches. It was well appointed and comfortable, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. Check in and check out were very easy and it is a great location to explore that stretch of the coast from.

  • Perfect stay at the Writer's Studio to kick off our California honeymoon! The space is even more beautiful than in the pictures and Amy really thought of everything. It was a little chilly on our visit (well, for southerners!) so the cozy bed and heaters in the bedroom and bathroom were appreciated. When the sun was out we enjoyed the little seated area outside with some wine. Finally, the location is an easy walk to the aquarium, delicious restaurants, a grocery store, and the coast for seal watching. Steinbeck is my favorite author so the history behind the cottage was just the icing on the cake. Will absolutely return the next time we are in California! :)

  • The studio was so adorable and charming! Amy was an amazing host and was incredibly accessible and helpful during our stay. She was even kind enough to mail a charger back to us that we had accidentally left behind. I would definitely stay there again if I had the chance!

  • The Writer's Studio is perfectly charming and made a great spot for our honeymoon! Amy was really wonderful - super responsive and took extra steps to make our stay great - and the location couldn't have been better...it was great to be able to walk to so many things, and great to be in such a quiet, private spot. We loved it!

  • Our host contacted us in a very timely fashion, and at times even before the automated AirBNB messages. The cottage was exactly what we expected. The neighborhood was quiet and unassuming.

  • This place is a dream. Beautifully decorated and just the right size for two. A full kitchen. A gorgeous bathroom. Fantastic location. It is all just perfect.

  • This little cottage was lovely in every way. Small and cozy, yes, but there was plenty of space for two to (email hidden), lots of reading, watch a movie (thanks SO much for having a Blu-Ray player!), and sleep delightfully well in the big cushy bed. I didn't have a chance to take a bath, but the shower was great, and the kitchen was very functional for such a small space. Everything was very well stocked, from linens to coffee grounds in the kitchen. And the decor was really lovely, with lots of fun details but not oppressively so--I frankly don't know how a person thinks up all those little touches, but I'm glad some people can! It was delightfully quiet at this cottage, but we still heard some sea lions!

  • What a fantastic place to stay. So well-decorated and cozy - we loved watching movies from, and sleeping soundly in, the amazingly comfortable bed, and appreciated the luxurious bathroom and the ability to cook up dinner in the kitchen. It had everything we needed and was absolutely gorgeous. It was a very short walk to the aquarium and the grocery store, and about 15 minutes to Pavel's Backerei, which had enormous (and delicious) chocolate croissants. Would definitely love to stay again, and will recommend to others.

  • Utterly charming! The studio is thoughtfully and skillfully decorated so that it is a delight to the senses to stay there. The fixtures and tile floors and shower are all very upscale. The multitude of windows, mostly vintage, bathes the studio in light. There was nice water pressure in the shower. The kitchen is a marvel. As tiny as it is, there is everything you need to prepare a nice meal. Loved all the dishes--especially the bird ones from Cost Plus World Market. If they still carry that pattern, I might buy some for myself. The real draw for us was that this property was once owned by John Steinbeck. Although the Steinbeck home on 11th Avenue is the most well known, this is the house John Steinbeck bought after he and his wife, Carol, separated. They separated six months after the trip to The Sea of Cortez that they made with the Monterey marine biologist, Ed Ricketts. Our primary interest is in Ed Ricketts, with whom John Steinbeck spent much time, including that six week sojourn to the Sea of Cortez. They co-wrote the book by the same name, and John Steinbeck did that writing at 425 Eardley. It was very special being able to stay in the landmark.
