Pacific Grove has been called “Butterfly Town U.S.A.,” “The Most Romantic City in the U.S.,” “A Dreamy California Destination, ” as well as an idyllic place to get married, to honeymoon or to just hang out. Some of it is self-proclaimed, some the acclaim of people who have actually visited Pacific Grove.
You will find Pacific Grove on the very tip of the scenic, tree-shrouded Monterey Peninsula with a rocky coastline and an ambiance of charm, grace and beauty.
Founded in the 1870s as a Methodist summer retreat, Pacific Grove still bears the look and feel of yesteryear. As you stroll the residential streets admiring the charm of home after home, you will notice little plaques on many of the homes that bear the name of the original owner and the year in which it was built. To qualify for a plaque from the Heritage Society of Pacific Grove, a structure must look like it did when it was originally built.
Among its visitors are brightly colored orange-and-black Monarch butterflies, who overwinter in Pacific Grove after traveling up to 2,000 miles, arriving by the thousands starting in October, peaking around Christmas and departing by March.
Besides its scenic beauty and idyllic neighborhoods, Pacific Grove offers an eclectic downtown experience, with small boutiques, gift shops, art galleries, antique stores and more. Other vibrant shopping areas are along Central Avenue at the entrance to Pacific Grove from Cannery Row and at the top of Forest Avenue on Forest Hill.
The Writer's Studio is centrally located and a short walk from many scenic destinations. It is located a half mile from The Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row, as well as downtown Pacific Grove. Lover's Point beach is just one mile away and downtown Monterey is two miles away.
There are many fantastic restaurants, activities and shops in the area.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the historic Steinbeck cottage! All of the amenities you might expect were available, but our favorite was an incredibly comfortable bed. We appreciated the follow up by Kevin and Vicky both prior to our stay and checking in after we arrived.
Regarding Pacific Grove, we frequently walked to town enjoying the restaurants, retail stores and even the movie theater. We would definitely stay again and encourage any Steinbeck enthusiasts!
Everything was great! Kevin & Vicky left clear and precise instructions regarding how to get to the property, how to gain access, how to contact them if there were any questions, how things at the property worked and so on. The pictures and descriptions were accurate and everything was lovely. It is a nice, quiet, cozy dwelling in a perfect location for visiting the Aquarium and Cannery Row.
We absolutely adored this little cottage and our time in Pacific Grove! Kevin & Vicky were wonderful and checked in with me to make sure we got checked in okay & were so quick to reply immediately regarding any issues we had. The cottage was perfectly outfitted with everything we needed (although those low doorways are no joke! My 6-foot-tall husband bumped his head a few times, so he was happy for the padding they'd installed on the edge of the door top)! And the cottage is in a great location! Easy access to all of Monterey area, just 15 minutes from Carmel, and an hour from Big Sur! We would stay here again in a heartbeat.
Amazing space, location, and very helpful owners. Quick response to our few requests/issues and very friendly. The Studio is adorable, if a bit small (the low ceilings are no joke), but perfect for a relaxing break and cozy night's stay between activities. The hilltop view is excellent, though that spot renders the return walk from downtown PG a bit rough (if that's your thing, wasn't a problem for us!). Within an hour of Santa Cruz, Carmel, and all the amazing scenery in between. We were blown away by the beauty of this part of the country and the Studio was the perfect home base. It gets a little chilly at night, so be prepared to snuggle!
The Writer's Studio was such an amazing place to stay for the weekend. The location could not have been better, just a short walk to Cannery Row and many great restaurants. The studio itself was so charming and the attention to detail was very evident. It is perfect for a romantic weekend away and I highly recommend staying here if you get the chance! The hosts were awesome. They provided us a list of recommended restaurants and places to see and explore as well as checking in with us the evening that we arrived. They made themselves available should we need anything from them. I wouldn't be surprised if my fiancé and I returned to this studio in the future (especially because we got engaged on our trip!!). This place highly exceeded our already high expectations :)
I had a wonderful time staying at the Writer's Studio in Pacific Grove. Everything was clean and put together so nicely, and there was nothing left to want in the cottage. It's in a great location central to everything you could want to see and do around the Monterey Peninsula. Kevin & Vicky provided lots of information for great restaurants in the area. I wish I had more time to stay and relax in the studio. Hopefully I will be able to return to the area in the future, and I would definitely consider staying in the cottages again. Thanks for providing a beautiful home away from home!
It was like going back in time, like the old writer himself was working, beckoning you to join him, almost demanding but not as your own need to write compels you to the task. It was the most relaxing and productive vacation I've ever had. Far better than a beach, mountain or "place," it soon became home, this low ceilinged Gaudiesque structure divided into three separate but adjoining and each unique oases each with its own private garden sitting area to watch the day unfold. Great care has been made by the proprietors to maintain the original facade, fixtures, furnishings and feel that were contemporary to John Steinbeck during his lifetime. A truly memorable experience to be enjoyed by all enamored by history and literature.
