Built in 1841 as a Victorian gentlemen's folly, this castle is now a real family home with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Set in 15 acres of grounds in a rural setting the castle is best visited with a car. On the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and less than an hour from the centre of the Lake District. This is a great place to explore Northern England.
Perfect as a unique venue for a celebration, the castle has small doorways and corridors but all ground floor guest areas are wheelchair friendly and there is a ground floor bedroom with full wheelchair access.
Some bedrooms have four posters, roll top baths, fireplaces - all are beautiful, interesting and warm.
Breakfast is huge and late and evening meals can be provided for at a cost. Children are well catered for, with additional rooms and special children's suppers.
Sleeps maximum 30 adults & 10 children in 15 bedrooms.
EXCLUSIVE USE IS AVAILABLE AT INCLUSIVE PRICE FOR 30 PEOPLE, PLEASE ENQUIRE.
Access to the entire castle & 20 acres estate (private living spaces as clearly marked)
Interaction with Guests
Simon, Wendy & their teenage children live on site & run the castle with a local staff of up to 16 so there is always someone around.
The Eden Valley is the quiet side of the county, natrually beautiful quiet & away from the crowds . Its not remote but feels it.
A train station in Kirkby Stephen (6 miles) or Appleby (8 miles), a limited bus service (1 mile) so a car is useful.
Other Things to Note
Augill Castle is run as a small hotel in a B&B style
A very relaxed place : kick off your shoes by the front door without causing a stir!
Augill Castle is incredible and we couldn't have enjoyed our stay more. Would recommend to anyone without reservation
Simon and Wendy's Castle is out of this world, a fabulous place to stay in a beautiful location. Fay, one of the staff, was on hand and looked after my every need. I had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend this very special place. Everything is very relaxed and you can wander the castle rooms at your leisure, eat when you like (within reason), and for a short time live a fantasy.
Absolutely spectacular! This place is like nothing else. Totally magical. A must experience.
We drove 5 hours up from London to experience life in a castle and it was absolutely worth every second of the journey. Wish we had stayed more than the night. It was an enchanting experience wandering around the ground floor of the castle which sports several recreational rooms, a mini cinema, a self serve bar and a big dining room. It was a truly unique, homely and comfortable stay, can't recommend it more!
Wonderful place! Wonderful people! Wonderful food! Wonderful rooms! What else can we want? The castle is just beautiful as well as the grounds... And Wendy and Simon couldn't be better hosts!!! One of the best places I've ever been and 100% recommended! Thanks so much for this fantastic stay!

What an amazing place! Was made to feel very welcome and the whole experience of staying in a castle was perfect. The room and ensuite were superb and the meals devine.
Simon and Wendy were great hosts. The castle was amazing and the grounds were beautiful. It helped that we were the only guests in a massive place, but it could easily accommodate the 20+ people advertised and you would have trouble seeing everyone. Breakfast the next morning was tasty and filling. Thanks again!
Started life as a Victorian gentleman's folly built in 1841. It is now home to Simon & Wendy and their children Oliver & Emily, (plus Maisie the Cocker Spaniel, chickens, goats and pigs galore) who run it as a quirky, quietly groovy sort of hotel/B&B.
A real family home which welcomes guests to stay for a night or two, have supper or dinner, party or even get married. A seriously relaxed place - no false formality, but a place where you can kick off your shoes by the front door without causing a scandal!
It is an old building with small doorways and corridors but all ground floor guest areas are disabled friendly and there are two ground floor bedrooms - one with full wheelchair access.
