About This Listing
Exchange Cottage was once a telephone exchange that has been lovingly converted into a cosy artist's cottage in the village of Kirkliston, which lies approximately 10 miles west of Edinburgh. The cottage is a lovely quirky place full of paintings and artworks.
It is very close to Edinburgh Airport (about 10 minutes by taxi).
To get to the heart of Edinburgh city centre you can drive or take a taxi (journey time is around 35 minutes, depending on traffic) or get the number 38X bus which takes about 50 minutes. In the other direction, the 38X bus goes to Stirling, with its magnificent castle.
My cottage is single storey with a vaulted ceiling. It consists of:
- A compact centrally-heated living/kitchen room with a sofa, dining table and chairs, and a beautiful Victorian fire surround (decorative only). In the kitchen nook, there is a wall-mounted electric oven, a gas hob, a fridge, a microwave oven, a washing machine and a sink. There is also a full set of pots, pans, plates, cups and other kitchen utensils.
- One double bedroom with a double bed, flat screen TV and a hanging area for clothes.
- A bathroom with a bath, toilet and washbasin and constant hot water.
In the village of Kirkliston there is:
- a supermarket (5 minute walk)
- chemist (1 minute walk)
- bus stop for bus to Edinburgh city centre (bus stop is 5 mins walk)
Plus take-away food places, library, pub and church.
You are also a 15 minute drive from the village of Queensferry with its famous Forth Bridge that crosses the Firth of Forth.
If you would like to rent Exchange Cottage, my daughter will handle the email communications but I will welcome you to the cottage and provide information about the local area.
First impression of the location was a little daunting but need not worry as it was a quiet cul de sac. We used it for a base as we were away every day and it fitted our needs perfectly. 10 mins to airport, 5 min walk to the main bus route to Edinburgh, walk to shops, takeaway and pubs. Short drive to the Fourth Bridge area and it's lovely pubs, cafes and restaurants. The cottage itself far exceeds the area in which in sits but this says more about the cottage than the area. Warm, cosy, cracking shower, all you would need for a short break to enable you to tour the area if you didn't want B n B or a hotel. If it were in a little more picturesque spot then it would be easy 5 stars.
Vielen Dank Clive!
Clive was waiting at the cottage for us when we arrived. He went through where things were and even had a variety of travel maps and brochures for us to use while in town. We felt very welcome and though Clive was out of town while we stayed in the cottage, he assured us that he would assist with any problem at just a phone call. We had a great time and being able to cook for ourselves and have our own space made the trip much more enjoyable. I will definitely look up Clive if we take a trip to Edinburgh again!
A lovely quiet village. Clive met us and had a lot of information about the area and attractions. The Exchange was as the photos showed but the oven is too high to be used safely. Since we were relying on public transport, we found the cost of the bus very expensive as only 1 bus line services Kirklisten.
My mom's and my little vacation in Clive's cottage was really lovely. Clive stayed up late to welcome us, as we got in at 11pm and explained everything patiently and in detail. He offered information on the surroundings and things to do. The place is about half a bus hour from the city, which is very handy. The contact was established via Clive's daughter, who was also very quick in responding (sorry for the late call!). All in all we felt very welcome here and would recommend the little cottage. Thank you, Clive!
Dit was helemaal wat we ervan verwachtten. Mooie kleine cottage voor twee, heel comfortabel. Alles erop en eraan. Originele inrichting.
About the Host, Clive
As a retired artist/graphic designer, I am passionate about Edinburgh's art scene. I'm a frequent theatre-goer, painter and writer, and I belong to several art groups in Edinburgh. My favourite artists are Van Gogh and Leonardo de Vinci.
My favourite thing about living in Edinburgh?
The fringe festival that happens every summer - I love going to comedy, improvisation and drama shows.
What else do I do?
I enjoy renovating and re-inventing unusual spaces. The place that I am renting out on Airbnb is a former telephone exchange. I converted it into a wonderful cottage to live in about 10 years ago - it's filled with paintings and other quirky artworks.
