You can walk out from the living area to the terrace with views over the roof tops of Marquixanes (pronounced marki shan) to Mount Canigou.
The terrace has a table and chairs so that all meals can be taken al fresco. There is also a gas grill so that you can cook out on the terrace and make the most of the beautiful views and sunny weather.

Marquixanes is a fabulous village, quiet and tranquil but also with great amenities, such as a Post Office, corner shop/tabac/café and a tapas bar, people come from miles around to get their patisseries from the village boulangerie/café. There is also a local wine shop with free tasting. For the young at heart..there is an adventure park at the river where you can climb on ropes up in the trees over the river, with zip wires and cargo nets, you can also indulge in canyoning, kayaking and all sorts of other adventurous activities.
This house has been very tastefully decorated and furnished. The terrace on the top floor gives incredible views over the area, and even has a fantastic view of the the "Pic du Canigou" - the most famous landmark of the area - the peak of the sacred mountain of the Catalans... you have to see it to believe it!
Unusually for a village house, there is plenty of storage - each bedroom has fitted wardrobes.
The Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrenees-Orientales region
Languedoc-Roussillon is perfectly positioned between the Mediterranean to the east where the beautiful sandy beaches provide long days by the sea, and the Pyrenees to the west, which offer a wealth of walking and cycling opportunities, not to mention skiing in the winter!
This region is a delight; the Conflent valley provides lush green scenery, with Mount Canigou dominating the skyline and the Pyrenees visible in the distance. You can be swimming in the sea in the morning, and hiking in the mountains in the afternoon. There are even thermal hot springs, so if you would like to combine the two activities we can suggest a hike AND a swim in the mountains! It really does offer you everything!
There is a lake in the local town of Vinca, with beaches, from which you can swim, sail or wind-surf, or you could just visit the popular open air swimming pool in Prades or nearby Ille sur Têt..
Weather: We benefit from being in the sunniest region of France, more than 300 days of sunshine per year. Enjoy warm, sunny weather from March all the way through to October. November and December are cooler but still with sunshine. January, February and March are great skiing months (45 minute drive to the ski resorts).
The Prades / Marquixanes area
Marquixanes is a fabulous village, quiet and tranquil but also with great amenities. For the young at heart there is an adventure park at the river, where you can indulge in canyoning, kayaking, rope adventure, with zip wires, cargo nets up in the tree tops and all sorts of other adventurous activities in the summer there is also a Tapas Bar.
The nearest main town, just a few kilometres away, is Prades. A thriving market town, Prades has many great shops and restaurants as well as a lively market on both Tuesday and Saturday mornings, where you can buy local produce such as the peaches and cherries that are grown in abundance here, fresh vegetables, wonderful cheeses…. and of course the excellent wine!
There are events and festivals throughout the year. the world famous Spanish cellist Pablo Casals fled to Prades during the Spanish civil war, stayed and established the festival that now bears his name. The Catalan summer school takes over the town for two weeks in August, and there is dancing in the square every night during this period.
Places of Interest: For touring the area, Marquixanes offers an excellent base. Just a few of the sites of interest within easy driving distance are listed below:
* Villefranche de Conflent, a fine example of a medieval walled town
* Little Yellow Train, catch this train from Villefranche and enjoy the specatular mountain views right into the Pyrenees.
* Grottes de Canalettes, magnificent renowned caves with an incredible light and sound show
* St Martin du Canigou, 9th century abbey perched impressively high on the hillside with fantastic scenery and walks.
* St Michel de Cuxa, 6th century abbey that hosts concerts during the Pablo Casals festival but is also open for viewing most of the year.

* Medieval Walled Town of Carcassonne.
* Spain is only 45 minutes to the South
All we ask is that you respect our home and lets us know should anything get broken so that we can replace it for the next guests. We ask that you leave the house in a good tidy condition but mostly we ask you to enjoy it.
Great place to stay! Not only the big house with a lot of provisions, a welcome gift and a Sunny terrace as well as the neighbourhood. Marquixanes is a very nice little town with lovely neighbours :) Things to do we can recommend: visit Eus, Carcassonne and Villefranche de conflents (absolutely worth it) and for families or adventurers visit the river side where you can also do activities.
Thank you for your lovely comments, you are right it is a great base to explore this beautiful area. As this house is over 3 floors clearly there will be stairs but the stairs are wide and do have good solid hand rails. We would love to welcome you back when you are next in the area.
Really lovely and clean house in a charming village near to Prades. Great communication with Julie, who even let us the possibility of very late check in and late check out, too :)
Can strongly recommend!

About the Host, Julie
We, Jonathan and Julie, have been living in France since 2001 and we are still very much in love with this stunningly beautiful region of France. We are married with 4 children and 4 grand children. Spare time is mostly taken up with renovating our derelict house. The apartment advertised in Ria-Sirach as "lovely apartment - large terrace" is the first part of the renovation to be finished and we are very proud of how successful it is.
Our favourite pass-times are eating, drinking, gardening, looking after our 4 chickens and "relaxing". If you get to know us you will realise that "relaxing" is meant to be a joke, it is something that we aspire to in the future.
We help other local holiday home owners to manage their houses, we have a selection of properties that we manage from a one bedroom apartment to 5 bedroomed villas. We have an amazing team of house-keepers, gardeners and pool maintenance people to look after you. If you need anything during your stay in any of the properties we have the expertise to help.
Feel free to contact us with your questions and if you need help in finding the house that is right for you.
