About This Listing
We have owned this property for 30+ year and consider it unique. It is situated on 3 rural landscaped acres with a 180 degree ocean view overlooking the City of Refuge National Park.
Upon entering the cottage you are in the living room with two floating chairs, a queen hideabed, cable HDMI (2) tv, wifi and a closet. To the right is the full kitchen set up for four, and county water, and dining room overlooking the ocean. Beyond the living room is the bedroom with queen bed, TV, desk, storage with towels, dresser, bookshelves, back door and attached remodelled 3/4 bath (with a private soaking tub right outside).
Outside is a BBQ, seating for 4, lanai chairs and a private shed with your own washer/dryer and more storage.
But mostly it's all about the views! You are in your own little world with the birds and yet you are within 10 minutes of 3 beach parks, gas, small stores and restaurants, smoothie stands, post office. A local bus goes by but a car is probably necessary.
This cottage has privacy, comfort, ideal temperatures (75-85 everyday at 900' elevation) with tradewinds and ceiling fans. You can literally throw your keys down upon arrival and call it home! The owners live about half hour north so you are on your own and yet there is housekeeping and maintenance nearby if you need it.
check in 3pm. Pretty strict but check with us for earlier check in or later check out. Check out noon.
My first trip via Airbnb and my first trip to Hawaii were overall very gratifying. The cottage is right next to another house, but there's enough foliage in between that it feels very private, as there's not really line of sight to that other house. Our hosts were really welcoming without being there in person; there was a nice fruit platter, they had an arrangement in place when we locked ourselves out, and some recommendations on what to do in the area.
The cottage itself was very pretty, and the photo in listing is thankfully outdated- thats because my wife and I are lame enough that we watched tv on vacation, and theres a modern HD tv now in the living room. The kitchen was as stocked as we needed it to be. The bed was comfy and there are plenty of fans to stay cool even during warm weather, which rarely is warm enough to be uncomfortably anyways at the higher, cooler elevation the cottage is at. The view of the ocean was nice from the front yard.
The only negatives were the parking situation, and natural consequence of being in a remote area. I'd recommend getting a small car in Hawaii in general, and will do so moving forward, but here especially it was necessary to drive further down the drive to the other house to back in and turn around, and couldn't but feel I was intruding a bit for the people in that house- and those people were all lovely and didn't make me feel intrusive, but its still a bit disconcerting. The second was that there were a lot of millipedes and lizards with access to the cottage; however, I've seen warnings about that in other listings on Airbnb on the island that are away from urban centers, so I'm sure that is not unique to this cottage.
My familiy and I loved The Cottage. It is a magical place. Nancy and Burt were very responsive to our emails. If you are looking for a unique accomdation that is in an idylic setting and close to great stuff the cottage for you. The rural settting was really a nice break. Loved hearing the roosters in the morning. I would highly recommend.
Wow, where do i begin~!? Nancy and Burt and team, though we contacted each other via email really, all made us feel SO very welcome, I never felt i had to hesitate with any questions, and she was incredibly communicative and helpful and accommodating. Talk about amazing kindness and hospitality !!
I have now had the pleasure of visiting a handful of homes on Big Island - this cottage is truly a special place. And I don't usually say things like that and throw words like that around..!
Everything was very clean, cozy, private, spacious, excellent. We had the entire home but also the large beautiful surrounding gardens all to ourselves. Every corner and beautiful surrounding area left me speechless; especially the view - i woke every AM just to go out and breathE with the sea and the perfect air and sky [ speaking of which, CertainlY go out the door in the night to see the most amazing star-filled clear sky i have every seen next to being iN a planeterium show :! ]. I also very much appreciated the privacy and all the space we had outdoors to ourselves -- this is so important to us, to have a calm quiet space to regroup and rest at any time.
We stayed through the holiday season -- On Thanksgiving Day we were gratefully given delicious food to make meals of; On Christmas Eve we were happily surprised with awesome fireworks literally out the front door -- the house some ways down the hill were having a brief but fun time with them :]
We met a number of beautiful souls and kind hearts in the neighborhood; when you visit don't be shy to ask and speak and look and taste and breathe in everything that Big Island has to offer -- and, by the way --- do NOT miss out on the many amazing [ wAy better than Sbux -and i dO love sbux ] coffee farms and cafes in the area, especially the Coffee Shack for super fresh brunch and Kona Coffee House and Cafe for their 5-star espresso -- and espresso ICE CUBES-!.
I really cant say enough. I hope to return to this amazing home full of Life and magic sooner than later! THANKS AGAIN!!!
What a beautiful little cottage with fantastic views! This was a great location, an easy drive (except rush hour) into Kona. Allow extra time if you are doing a tour as we were, as a 30 drive turned into 1 hr leaving at 7:00 am!
Nancy and Bert were just wonderful. Loved having the washer and dryer and Kona coffee with cream was great. Beach chairs, cooler.,thank goodness! We enjoyed our experience and would like to return next year!
Just to let others know, although we had no issues climbing the steps from the driveway, the cottage is up a hill and the steps although rustic and lovely being constructed of volcanic rock, they are sloped and uneven which might prove difficult to climb for some folks.
Beautiful sweeping views of the ocean below, a quiet location and just up the road from great snorkeling at Two Step Beach or dolphin spotting at Kealakekua Bay. We had a wonderful time and Nancy was super responsive.

About the Host, Nancy
My husband and I have lived in Kona for over 30 years and have been hosting vacation rentals for 18 years. We hope to downsize our lives in the next couple of years when our two kids graduate college.
