Channing House is spacious, light, stylish on aprivate estate that was once part of Bette Davis’ house, Riverbottom. In the equestrian area in Griffith Park just minutes from Hollywood, Los Feliz and the major studios. Heated salt water pool, hot tub
Channing is the largest house available on the estate. The MASTER BEDROOM looks through arched windows to the fruit orchard and the unique round brickwork and shingled roof of the original gate to Riverbottom, Bette Davis’ estate. It is bright and spacious with a king-sized bed, all natural organic mattress and features a comfy custom headboard to snuggle into with your late night novel. A Moroccan chandelier casts soft light patterns on the clear bright walls. Watch the moon rise over the blue foothills of Mount Hollywood.
The stylish Moroccan LIVING ROOM/KITCHEN with the great round white chandeliers that pattern the white washed walls. The large Moroccan wood dining table is bathed in light from the arched windows. Open plan kitchen with dishwasher, because no one wants to do the dishes while on holiday:-) 32” flat screen television with both digital cable and Apple TV and a handmade Moroccan couch (that can also be used as another bed). The original art on the walls make this a great ‘home away from home’
The second BEDROOM also has Moroccan lights, dark wood floors and two comfy twin beds. The front windows look out toward the San Gabriel Mountains as they turn purple in the evening light.
The slate tiled BATHROOM has a built in shower room and a stackable washer and drier. The patterned hallway off the living room has the controls for the central heating and air conditioning.
We have a bonus room that can be set up in different ways; an office with the desk and a number of outlets for those on a work trip; or as a little baby room with a crib. (let me know when you book if you want to use this option)
Please don’t let the bucolic setting and the hooting of the owls fool you, we are still in the heart of the city and you should be aware that you can sometimes hear the freeway, helicopters, dogs and sirens typical of city living. I mention it because it seems out of place while you lounge in the sun on the lawn feeling like you are out in the country.
The grounds are huge with two gardens. The front area, where Channing House is, with the sandy fruit orchard, vegetable garden, gated parking, fountain and seating areas. The back garden is dominated by a large lawn to play games on, the salt water pool and spa, the sun bathing area and outdoor shower and loo, and of course the horse stables where Misty and Curly (horse and pony) and a pair of chickens live. Further still and you reach the back gate that opens onto Easter Field and all of Griffith Park.
Interaction with Guests
I live in one of the houses on the estate with my two young children. We have keyless entry and the grounds are large enough that the house feels very private. With the added bonus that we are right there to answer questions or fix any thing that may arise.
We share the estate with other houses that are available through airbnb. It is not uncommon as the sun is setting that we all gather to play or chat on the lawn or fruit orchard. It is a unique place and a little hard to describe how at times it feels like village on a summers day.
no body walks in LA, you can, but people don't. they drive to Griffith park and hike.
Other Things to Note
Boring Legal Things: A 10% Transient Occupancy Tax, imposed by the city of Glendale, has been added to the final cost of the rental room (which we pay to the city). This is supposed to stated separately as an additional cost to your room rental, however AirBnB does not allow for this option in pricing.
We charge a high cleaning fee. This is for the standard cleaning that we do before each guest and the small repairs, repainting, replacing damaged furniture, rugs, upholstery and minor fixes. We all break things and spill. Is isn’t very pleasant to have a lovely holiday only to get in to the nitty gritty of broken glasses or wall scratches at the end of it. These things happen and the second half of the cleaning fee goes toward the repairman.
Like in the country, if you see a gate open, leave it open, if it is closed, close it after you.
No smoking inside please. If you smoke, please do so outside and use an ashtray. Please empty the ashtray in the outside bins and not in the house
No more than two guests at a time on the property. If you have a group, please ask Amy (phone number hidden)
Please Use the pool fence gates. They can be a little tricky to operate as they are designed to keep toddlers out. Pull the toggle on the top of the gate up to open. If in frustration you take the fence down, please make sure you put it together again for the sake of the kids on the property. MAKE SURE THE GATE IS COSED AFTER USE and that the pool is secured once you have finished. Again, we have young children on the property and really like them and want to ensure their safety☺
To operate the spa, push the spa on button once on the puck mounted in the gray box in the wall by the fire pit. There are also buttons for the bubbles and the pool lights. Be patient, if you push the buttons repeatedly the pool gets cross and resets itself☺
Curly and Misty are new to our family; please do not feed them by hand (it can make them bitey). They both love carrots and apples and if you want to feed them just these treats place in their manger (where the hay is). There is a light switch for the stables just round the corner by the tack room door (watch out for spiders)
the estate is great for dogs and we do allow them (with a $100 cleaning fee). Please keep them on a leash in the pool garden (no pooping in this area please). You are welcome to let them off leach to run around in the front garden. There is a great sandy area out the back gate known as Easter Field and Bette Davis Picnic Area. Please pick up after your dog and place it in the outside bins. Please do not leave your dog unattended.
We share the grounds with other holiday homes. Please be friendly and courteous to our other guests. No noise, music or loud talking after 10.30 or before 7am. Whispering is okay as long as there is kissing involved or there is a full moon ☺
Trash is in the bins down the back alley behind the ping pong area. Trash day is Tuesday morning.
Redish for rubbish
Gray for recyclables
Green for grown things.
Please take care of the floors, walls and furniture; some of it is expensive and imported.
Hope this is not to frightening or strict. If you have any questions, issues, problems or recommendations, please let us know.
We were greeted by homemade (delicious) bread and citrus trees in the garden. The estate was lovely and we felt at home to roam and enjoy all it had to offer. The open floorplan was ideal for what we needed and we had some of the best sleep on the organic mattress! From a designer's eye the Moroccan textiles made the house extra special.
We couldn't have found a better location in the heart of LA to relax but also enjoy all that the city had to offer.
We stay in Amy's house for 4nights. it's a wonderful and unique experience for most of us. As frequent international travelers we're used to chain hotels and standardized service, stay in the "castle" with beautiful backyard and company by curious mule, peaceful night with real star fame, that's the whole point for this besties get away trip. Everyone enjoyed trip. Thanks to Amy's hospitality, she briefed us warmly even we arrived much later than expected, leave us a very clean, well maintained B&B. She even baked us great cinnamon muffin as arrival greeting. And the house is very spacious, with 5 queens 12 luggage case, it's still feel very comfy. Thanks to Amy to share with us her lovely house!
Amy's house is really attractive, well kept, and well decorated. Amy herself is amazingly accommodating and helpful. We stayed for three weeks, and she went above and beyond in accommodating requests. We have kids and dogs (note both plural) and I really appreciated how warm and welcoming she was to our whole clan. The yard and pool in back are gorgeous and peaceful. I would absolutely stay again--exceptional accommodations.
Staying with Amy was perfect. Her House and the garden were amazing. We had everything we needed. The house was comfy and stylish and the garden had a great pool. If I am ever again in Los Angeles I would love to stay at Amys again and would definitely recommend her house to my friends!
Everything about the experience at Amy's was more than perfect. She was a great host and her home and the land with the pool and the horses was so amazing for us and for my son. She was perfectly available when we needed her and it was such a magical relaxing experience. We will definitely be back.
Amy was a great host and her house was spacious, clean and very convenient and much more than we expected. Amy was very accommodating and nothing was too much trouble for her. The pool and garden facilities were excellent. I would have no hesitation in recommending Amy's home as a great base for a stay In LA.
