I call my home MangoHaus. I've lived here since 1999 when I bought the house as a fixer-upper. MangoHaus was originally architect designed and built in 1949, and had never been renovated. She was pretty sad when I found her in 1999. Yet, because she was never renovated, she hadn't been butchered with shoddy work. The essence of the MiMo (Miami Modernism) interior space remained in tact and still oozed that brat-pack cool. So my goal when I began renovating Mango-Haus in 2004 was to preserve her design essence while bringing her up to date. Although MangoHaus now has large new hurricane proof windows, central A/C, new roof, new doors, new bathrooms, and kitchen, the house still evokes the clean geometry of modernist spaces (think Bauhaus) set within Miami's tropical color, light, and coastal topography. It's sweet like a mango, but pure like a Corbusier building or a Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian house.
Mango-Haus is located on Miami Beach's Normandy Shores Golf Course. The house faces the course so all you see from the large living room window is green space. Most people are surprised how quiet and peaceful the home and Normandy Island neighborhood are. Quiet and peaceful are not normally virtues associated with Miami, yet here it is! Off the island you have cosmopolitan Miami; on the island, bird song and ocean breezes.
Layout is 3 bedroom/2 full bath. MangoHaus has wi-fi and internet and an audiophile sound system. I'm an audio freak so records, cds, and internet audio played through quality equipment are a key ingredient of the MangoHaus vibe. I'd rather be listening to well-recorded flamenco than watching the tube. (I make an exception for Miami Heat basketball and World Cup soccer matches!)
Art is central in the house and includes original paintings, photographs, textiles, and a 1968 Triumph motorcycle. I'm pretty much a geek over anything machine-age and modern.
Mango-Haus is in walking and bike riding distance to the beach. I walk to the beach most mornings where we have a new beachwalk that attracts joggers, bladers, bikers, etc. A lot of people also walk/jog/ride the golf course cart paths where you see lots of parrots, egrets, ducks, geese, and an occasional turtle, frog, or iguana. MangoHaus is on the northern end of Miami Beach which - relative to South Beach - is quiet, uncongested, less expensive, yet within short bus/car reach (or nice bike ride) of South Beach. In short, you are in the best location possible to explore all of Miami including Coconut Grove, South Beach, Aventura, The Design District, etc. while having the luxury of returning to a quiet, safe, comfy home.
Safe. Normandy Island is gated and visitors pass a guard on their way onto the island. We have the lowest crime rate on Miami Beach. The house has an ADT security system and new doors, windows, and locks.
Other amenities. In addition to the golf course, our island also has tennis courts that look out onto a bay in the inter-coastal waterway; a golf-course clubhouse with full bar and restaurant; a large children's playground, soccer field, and basketball court.
Bus, rental bikes, Walgreen's, restaurants, and grocery stores are all in walking/biking distance. We also have the best juice bar in the world in walking distance - family owned for over 60 years! If you like fresh mango, pineapple, oranges, coconut milk, papaya...you name it, they have it.
The surrounding neighborhoods are somewhat undiscovered modernist gems. Most people are aware that South Beach has great MiMo neighborhoods, but for most of Miami Beach's history, it was just one place -- Miami Beach was Miami Beach rather than North and South Beach. Thus, all of Miami Beach - including North Miami Beach - was built in the MiMo era and exudes the same tropical modernist vibe. So you can stroll among our cool buildings and shops on your way to the beach with the benefits of actually being able to park or get a meal and a drink without breaking the bank!
The MangoHaus welcomes all creeds, colors, nationalities, ethnicities, orientations, and family configurations including solo travelers!
Whether you are retreating to unplug, or need a base camp for clubbing, I'm here to support your tropical turn inward or outward and make your getting what you need possible in the least obtrusive way.
I am also here to support the creative professional who is producing work in Miami and needs an appropriate home atmosphere to nourish that work. Film, music, modeling, festival professionals welcome. Gallery staff, visiting orchestra and show professionals, and boat show vendors welcome. U.S. Sailing Center clients welcome including U.S. Olympic and visiting athletes. Flamenco troops participating in Flamenco week, more than welcome! In short, if you are contributing to Miami's creative life, I offer you my home and my support.
I look forward to sharing the MangoHaus with you.
This was our first airbnb experience and Erik truly exceeded our expectations. A great host, a very nice house in a great location, quiet and secure neighborhood yet close to all the activity...
This place was AMAZING! Eric was a great host, the place as super clean and the house was in true Art Deco form. Thank you Erik!!! If ever you wish to check out my music visit (website hidden)!
Great weekend at Erik's place : clean, convenient, and above all, Erik has been available and easygoing. I strongly recommend to stay at his place. On top of that, the neighborhood is absolutely charming !
Erik is a super host. His house is more beautiful than the pictures. He has a huge collection of books and music which I enjoyed a lot. I truly felt like home during my stay. Thanks Erik!
Great location and very friendly and helpful host. We did have some issues with the air conditioning though since, regarding to our preferences it was set to a too low temperature and both my boyfriend and I cought a cold. However, we would definitely recommend the place since it is the perfect combination of a quiet and peaceful accomodation close to the beach and not far from Miami south beach. Best holidays! :)
Thank you Erik! :)
We had a great couple of nights staying with Eric. His house is in a beautiful position in Miami beach and is so peaceful, which is a welcome change from the madness of South Beach!
We were only sorry that we didn't get a chance to spend more time with Eric, but hope we may be able to if we visit Miami again!
Thank you Eric!
I was a guest in Mango Haus for a month as a student and had a very positive experience during my stay. Erik is a friendly and approachable host. In addition to providing comfortable, clean accommodations, the neighborhood is safe and close to the beach/restaurants on Collins Ave, the Saturday Farmer's Market on Rue Vendom, and a reasonable driving distance to South Beach and University of Miami/Gordon Bldg. Thanks for sharing your lovely home, Erik!
Erik was a wonderful host. His house was clean and comfortable. It was a short cab ride to plenty of restaurants and the beach. It was a safe, affordable, homey alternative to a hotel.
Erik’s house is located at a wonderful location near Miami beach (20 min). The house provides the opportunity to enjoy the busy life in Miami and retreat to sleep in a quiet a safe neighbourhood. We really enjoyed our stay.
Thank you Erik
Really nice and confortable house in north Miami Beach, the house is in a golf court.
