About this listing
A studio apartment with King Bed, private bathroom & 'Bali Style' outdoor shower, mini fridge with tea/coffee & small sun room. Wi fi signal. Apartment is at street level and right downtown in Hilo - close to restaurants, market etc. Street parking.
Plenty of natural light and the architectural features of wood, tile and stone give this Apartment an old world feeling.
Enter from our garden courtyard, and hear the sound of running water from the stone pond beside the entryway. There is plenty of ambience and a feeling of 'sanctuary' here. This apartment is something a little exotic for your visit to Hilo. Charming architectural features include stone and teracotta tile floors, a timber wall and wooden beams. The Lohi features King sized bed.
'Lohi' is the Hawaiian name for the wetland taro that grows in clear running water. This apartment was formerly a 'Poi factory' where the staple taro vegetable was processed and was a much loved icon for Hilo locals for several generations and since the 1980's it was converted to a clothing store where two leading Hawaiian designers got their start. ..Fast forward to 'now' and you will find this is a self contained apartment with a bedroom, a sun room, private bathroom and outdoor shower area. A ceiling fan helps to cool the bedroom and due to the helpful suggestions of our guests we have added extra privacy by hanging a curtain on the rear door.
There's no kitchen here but there is a mini fridge and a tea & coffee station. This may work for travelers who don't plan on spending vacation time cooking. Once you step out onto the street, there are plenty of great restaurant choices for breakfast, lunch or dinner within one or two blocks of The Lohi.
PLEASE NOTE THAT TO THE TOTAL COST PER NIGHT GUESTS ADD 13.25% TAX WHICH IS PAYABLE UPON ARRIVAL. This apartment is part of a complex of several old homes which have been refurbished and restored and is called 'The Lotus Garden.' On the property is a two bedroom guest cottage called 'The Sugar Shack' and a three bedroom vacation home called 'The Lotus.' Both of these homes are listed with airbnb.com. Our guests continue to let us know that our central location makes their stay with us easy and convenient.
You can enjoy the convenience of being in the same block as some great budget cafes and restaurants as well as grocery stores and the Farmer's Market.
Travelers on a budget could do without a car here if it's a slow paced vacation they are looking for..Most visitors do hire a car however just so that they can see more of the remote spots on the island. If you are looking for an alternative to the major rental companies, just ask us for a recommendation for someone renting cars .. and thanks for stopping by and reviewing this listing. We hope this is a wonderful vacation for you.
Guests are welcome to spend time in our garden, sit and eat a meal or check emails in a lush tropical setting. Wi fi and all linens are provided including beach towels on request. No laundry facilities are offered but we are able to provide laundry soap and a free laundry card that guests can charge to do laundry at the nearby 'Express Laundry.'
Interaction with Guests
We try to assist guests who may have questions or want advice about places to eat, sights to see. It is up to our guests how much interaction they wish to have with us as hosts.
Hilo is a great town to walk about in and explore because of its small size. The heart of Downtown Hilo is only 3 blocks. In this area you will find wonderful restaurants and several great venues for live music. Keawe street is home to a wonderful crepe restaurant, a Kombucha bar, a Kava bar and two great sushi restaurants. There's also a farmer's market on Bayfront and plenty of little stores to browse in. We love the slower pace of life here and the many artists, musicians and eccentrics who call this home.
Hilo is a very walkable town with restaurants, live music venues, stores and a farmers market all within an easy walk. For those who choose not to hire a car, there are taxi tours and bus tour operators to several of the major sights on the East side of the island. A local bus service is inexpensive but also a less direct way to get around.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. There are not too many rules necessary. As with most Hawaiian homes, shoes aren't worn inside. Guests are asked to keep noise to a minimum after 9pm. As noted in the property description, there will be a 13.25% sales tax payable when you arrive by cash or paypal or credit card.
Within a few days of your arrival, it is appreciated if you get in touch with us and let us know an approximate arrival time. If you know you will be arriving late, it is appreciated if you can let us know ahead of time.
We hope you can relax and feel at home. Thank you for choosing to stay with us!
About the Host, Megan
Aloha I'm Megan. Meet Jasper also. We've been working to create a colorful atmosphere for visitors that reflects the beauty of the tropics. Both of us enjoy helping guests feel comfortable so that they can relax and enjoy all the magic of this wet and wild side of the island.
Hilo could become known as 'the town that time forgot' because it has the flavor of an older, slower Hawaii. In that way we are pretty easy going and relaxed ourselves. We have two guest cottages and a romantic 1 bedroom apartment here at The Lotus Garden. This is a property that features two garden courtyards, stone Buddha statues, a fish pond and an abundance of tropical plants and trees. . The Lotus Garden is reminiscent of the former 'sugar cane plantation days' when houses were clustered together so that there was a sense of community in the way people lived. Here Travelers meet other travelers in passing. Another wonderful feature of The Lotus Garden is that we are right in the center of town. Guests enjoy being a block away from the Farmer's Market and within walking distance of our cafes, restaurants, galleries and even Hilo's own Kava Bar.
Just ask us. .. we know some great little beach parks close by and some special things to do around Hilo..
... Our latest creed to live by? "Now is a really good time!" And so it is..
