The Space

Rooms for rent, I live on the property. For larger parties I will make accommodations for myself to be elsewhere so that you can have the whole apartment to yourselves!
A newly renovated, beautiful, clean, cozy apartment with artistic details.
Just a place to crash is a loft that has a queen size bed on a good size 10x14 loft that rents for $65.00 per night. The loft space is not a private room, but rather a comfy space with pleasant surroundings. If you need a spot for a good nights' rest this is the place! I am not quite sure how to describe this space because it is not shared with other guests, but because there is no door it is not a private room either. It is a space that is at the top of the stairs and right before the guest room behind a door.
A high end kitchen you can use if you would like to buy your own food and cook something, as well as a comfortable living room and a dinning room.
Safe area, one block from the police station and across the street from the court house and secured building with alarm system and video camera. Driveway available, first come first served. Right across from the house is a bus stop and a 5 min bus ride takes you to downtown Boston. Also across the street is a convenience store, nice restaurants and coffee shop.
Since this is my home and not a hotel I will not be able to insure quiet during the day. People get up and go about their day at a fairy early hour around 9AM it will not be possible or fair to other guests to request quiet during afternoon hours, so if you need sleep during the day this might not be the place for you.

Check In
  • When I came in, I thought I was in the wring building! The front door was broken. The pictures must be very old or reworked. With a lot of stuff sitting around made a very chaotic impression. The air was really bad, although I had the window open the whole night it didn´t get any better. To enter our room we had to walk by another person seeping on the hall way. Nothing seemed to be cleaned. The drain in the sink wasn´t working. We had no kind of Internetaccess. I wasn´t able to inflate my matraze enought, because the air pump wasn´t working well enough. The blanket didn´t seemed to be fresh washed. The close location to the airport (13$ Cab ride) made the night very noisy, aircrafts were flying over the house every 5 min. It was complicated to get to downtown because the you never know when the bus comes. One time we waited 45min.
Would not recommend it unless you don´t care that dust and dirt covers everything.

  • It is cheap and has a good location which only need 5 min to the bus stop. Johan didn't really show up. All who community with us is her mom, Michelle, she is friendly and nice. She lent me her sweater cus I forgot to bring my jacket.

The place is different from the pictures. The front door had a bid hole which looked like somebody try to got in by force. and no wifi.

  • First of all, as everyone else has said, the place looks nothing at all like the pictures. These must have been taken years ago. Michelle doesn't even look like her picture anymore (it is Michelle in the picture, not Johna). All of my communication was with Michelle. According to Michelle, Johna, her daughter, does not live there. Michelle texted me and asked when we would arrive at the place, and I estimated around 2pm. She informed me that she would not be there and that someone would let me in. We got there around 2:20pm, rang the doorbell several times, and knocked loudly on the door. There was no answer. I texted Michelle that we were there but no one was answering. She had her downstairs neighbor ring the doorbell and knock on the door as well (not sure why him doing it would help any differently). Still no answer. Finally, a man answered the door who was putting on his pants and buckling his belt. There was a woman upstairs (Johna) who started yelling and cursing at us. She was also in the process of getting dressed as well. She called us ignorant and said we never rang the doorbell or knocked, and that it was our fault that Michelle was getting upset with her for not answering the door. She wanted us to leave and go find a hotel and said she hated that Michelle ran this bed and breakfast. When Michelle finally got home, she begged us to stay although we were quite ready to leave after that "welcome". She insisted Johna would not stay there and would be at a friend's house. Since the place is cheap and in a good location, we agreed. Unfortunately, we saw Johna at the place again later that night. Michelle ended up calling the cops because Johna was having such extreme verbal outbursts. A police officer came and took statements from us. Michelle claimed she filed for a restraining order on Johna. We didn't see her for awhile, but Michelle once confronted us saying that us whispering was making her uncomfortable in her own home and that we should leave if we keep whispering. Also beware if you stay here there are three rooms to rent, so you could have potentially have up to 10 guests staying in this place at once. Michelle had many random visitors in and out of the place quite frequently. We had the displeasure of seeing Johna around the neighborhood several times. Michelle informed us that the room upstairs (the Beautiful Room which is right next to Just A Place to Crash) was being rented out, but it was just Johna staying in there with a friend. They were loud all night when we had an early flight the next morning and could be heard having sex repeatedly. Basically, the price and the location (which were awesome) were not worth the drama and trouble we encountered. It's your choice as to what matters more.

  • Johna is a great host, there's a huge private space for an affordable price!

  • bad....

  • This is exactly what we needed! As a group of students down in Boston to work by day and party by night, Johna was incredibly accepting of our early departures and (very) late arrivals.

The place itself is quite simple and does the trick for someone who just needs to get some descent rest 10 minutes from downtown Boston. There is a mild cigarette odour that does linger around, but being with a party of smokers myself, we took no offence to it.

When some of our party members got lost in Chelsea, Johna did an excellent job to help us feel back at home!

  • Because of car trouble, we arrived extremely late (around 1:00am), and I was very appreciative and grateful that the hostess let us in with no complaints.

That said, there were several things that happened that made our stay unpleasant:

    1) The phone number given to me by the hostess doesn't accept incoming calls. Therefore, when we realized we would be arriving in Boston several hours later than planned, we were unable to reach the hostess from the road to inform her of our late arrival. We became very worried about meeting up with the hostess, on top of the problems we were experiencing on the road. I feel that all hosts should provide guests with a working phone number.

    2) Because the house description says "smoking in designated areas only," we were under the assumption that our sleeping space would be smoke-free. We assumed the smoking areas were out-of-doors. Wrong. People were smoking throughout the house. We smelled like smoke when we left the house. We were very much bothered by it while we were there. My husband has asthma and we were traveling with our 10-year-old son. We would never have reserved this space had we known about the smoking.

    3) There are major problems with the plumbing. The bathroom sink doesn't drain, which presents a problem when the host is accommodating approximately 7 guests plus the other members of her household. When I mentioned the problem to the hostess, she said she was aware of the problem, but had decided it was too expensive to fix, and had decided to live with it as is. That's fine, but you shouldn't charge someone for a room/bathroom if they're not going to be able to adequately bathe in that bathroom.

    4) We stayed in the loft. A door from another sleeping space opens onto the loft. We were unaware this was the case when we made our reservation. The two persons in that room had no choice but to enter and exit their room through our sleeping quarters. This meant privacy was at a real minimum for us.

Finally, the house needs a good cleaning. The space is not cluttered, but it isn't clean, either. The toilet was dirty, and so was the carpet. I'm not immaculate at home, myself, but I'm also not charging people $75 a night to sleep in my home. I've stayed in a clean, smoke-free guesthouse in the Back Bay when I've come to Boston in the past. The rooms there are only about $30/night more than this place. I've decided I'd rather pay more in the future if it means I can stay in a smoke-free space where I can also bathe.

I'm sorry to have to leave this review, but I feel honesty is the best policy in this situation. Otherwise, on a personal level, the hostess was pleasant and non-intrusive. However, I would NOT stay here again.

I am a professional, friendly person who enjoys meeting new people from all over the world. I lived in NY, NJ and NH but for the most part I've lived in Boston and call it my home. I am a creative, honest person who loves wine, warm weather and the company of friends. You only live once, maybe more :-) I look forward to meeting you!!
