The Space

Abalone Cottage is perched on 25-acres of Greenwood Ridge, in Mendocino County. This hexagonal, hand-crafted cottage offers rustic-charm and sweeping vistas of the forest and distant ocean views. The upper main level houses the large sleeping area with queen bed (comfy feather bed mattress topper and down comforters), wood burning stove, sofa, toilet/sink, ipod/phone dock/radio, and expansive views from three large windows. Your private downstairs (exterior access) includes a large tiled shower and bathroom sink, and a complete kitchen with full-size refrigerator, gas stove, microwave, coffee maker, blender, dishes, table and chairs. Views from the kitchen/dining area.

The entrance to the owner's home is 50' from the cottage entrance, but your total privacy is assured. Enjoy the large redwood deck with views of the distant sea (see photos); garden and koi pond surround the deck, which is the perfect spot to enjoy your favorite beverage and the often picturesque sunsets, or sip your coffee in the morning with the birds and other forest life. You also have the cottage's private deck with koi pond beckoning you to sit and enjoy the sun. For your morning we provide coffee and tea, and a light starter to prepare you for an exciting day of adventure on the Mendocino coast!

This special property is 10 minutes from Elk and the Pacific Ocean, 30 minutes from Boonville and the many wineries of the cutting-edge Anderson Valley, and 40 minutes from the famed village of Mendocino. Although only 2.5 hours from SF, the cottage offers a soothing respite amid the vastness of nature. If you're in need of a real break, and enjoy - night skies teeming with stars, wind rustling in the trees, rain on the roof while you're sleeping - Abalone Cottage might be the place for you. Note that cell phone and related network access is good for most carriers (but is carrier dependent) and the cottage has limited access to wireless internet and there is no television.

Visit our guidebook on this site for a taste of our favorite restaurants, wineries and bars and an idea of the many offerings of the county, and if this sounds like the spot for you, we hope to hear from you soon!

  • Abalone cottage was a lovely place to stay for our anniversary trip. The cottage is off the beaten path, but very accessible to both the Mendocino coast and the Anderson Valley. Mike was an excellent host with very good attention to detail. He was friendly without being invasive and gave us excellent ideas about the area. The cottage was beautiful and cozy with wonderful views and a very relaxed vibe. I would highly recommend this cottage for one or two people looking for a relaxing retreat.

  • The location of the cottage was amazing, up on a ridge overlooking the valley and with a small glimpse of the coast. The sunsets in the evenings were breathtaking and perfect time to enjoy a glass of wine on the deck or coffee in the morning and enjoy the solitude and quietness of their property. Mike was very charming and welcoming gentleman. I felt like I could talk to him for ages because he has so much knowledge and so many stories about the surrounding area. Who needs a guidebook when you can ask him questions!
The cottage was adorable, plenty of space for two people. Kitchen had everything you needed, we cooked both breakfast and dinner there several times with ease. It truly was a great spot to get away from the city and relax, enjoy nature and drink the wonderful pinot noirs of the Anderson Valley.
I was sad to leave and head back to work because it truly was a gem.

  • Laura and Mike were wonderful hosts, and we had a great time in Abalone Cottage. The cottage is comfortable and cozy (we stayed warm in May even without a fire), and there is a full kitchen where we cooked dinner. The mountain ridge is such a peaceful place to relax, with views all the way down to the Pacific and a great deck to take it all in when we weren't exploring Mendocino county. We hope to come back sometime!

  • We had a lovely, relaxing time at the Abalone Cottage. It was a comfortable space with a gorgeous view from the deck. It is definitely is a comfy bed with nice sheets, comforter and pillows. Mike was a very helpful and extremely friendly host. Where else can you be sung to sleep by your own personal choir of frogs? Delightful. Thanks so much for the peace and quiet!

  • Lovely, everything! Mike and Laura were not only responsive in the planning process, but also gave us a warm welcome as if we were old friends! The cottage is cozy, kitchen is equipped, wood burning stove is a plus, and views from atop the ridge with the ocean peaking in the distance blends a perfect retreat! A short drive to Elk for delightful small town charm and beautiful beaches and close enough for a day trip to Mendocino, Anderson Valley wineries and more... Loved the area, the cottage and the hosts!

  • We had a wonderful stay at the Abalone Cottage. The setting is ideal, with stunning views facing out toward the ocean and close proximity to the coast as well as beautiful Anderson Valley. The cottage itself is cozy, well-designed, very comfortable (the bed is GREAT!), and feels quite private. We brought our dog...he so enjoyed romping around in the fully fenced in yard and exploring the surrounding woods and beaches. Mike was there to host us and did an incredible job of making us feeling truly at home and welcomed. He was super gracious, helpful, and an interesting person to share time with. Many thanks for a great weekend!

  • Abalone Cottage is a cute little cabin in the middle of the woods with beautiful views! The property (cottage plus Laura and Mike's house) is up an 8+ mile mountain road and feels wonderfully secluded. Even though the house is close to the cottage, Mike and Laura will give you your space. The kitchen has everything that you would need and the sleeping area is cozy and comfortable. Mike lit a fire for us in the wood stove which was really nice. The bed was comfortable. This is a great spot to relax in the woods and enjoy the fresh air and scenery.

  • WOW ~ Words cannot describe the amazing experience we had at Abalone Cottage thanks to Mike and Laura! But I will try my best:
Communication was a breeze. Emails were answered promptly and anything else we needed to know was conveniently in a few guidebooks that the hosts provided.
A fire was waiting for us when we arrived, made by Michael. Thanks for that! Such a cozy and beautiful cabin. They also provided a light bagel breakfast in the fridge and some coffee.
We took their advice and drove a short while to Manchester Beach, where we walked miles without the presence of any other people! It was great! Beautiful coastline with amazing views from ocean to forrest to mountain.
Mendocino town isn't far north and a nice place to walk around, although if you like your solitude we suggest driving south if anything.
We could have easily just relaxed and read by the fire in the cabin. It really is a gorgeous property. And Michael and Laura are truly wonderful people. No complaints or requests here!
We will definitely be coming back to Abalone Cottage in the near future.

  • My girlfriend and I had a very relaxing stay at Mike and Laura's cabin. It is nestled in the hills with fabulous views of the forested valley and ocean from the deck. Remember to pack a variety of clothes and layers... the temperature can drop 20 degrees if you head west to the Mendocino Coast or rise 20 degrees if you head east into Anderson Valley.
