Relax and enjoy yourselves
Old polyester sheets. Worn out, crushed mattress with 2 cheap pieces of foam on top to compensate. The cheapest, lightest weight-cookery ever. Three plastic drinking glasses for four people. Non-existent internet during holidays. No one welcomes or checks in with you. Sheets cleaned and beds made by whichever tourist preceded you, along with entire house cleaning done by whomever stayed before you, unless that tourist was short term. Unless you stay short term, when you arrive you find out you're the maid for the next guest and you pay for two bottles of propane no matter how much you use. You pay whatever Chris says for electricity but with no meter readings. You pay for trash pickup, $10 for half of a ten gallon plastic bucket. Your wilderness home is five feet from another house, and they're building a house in your back yard with so much noise you have to shout at someone a few feet away. The pictures cleverly disguise the actual setting. Chris lives elsewhere and his family whose house is above yours offers no hospitality. The dirt road is so steep that when it's wet or not recently graded, lots of tire spinning and fish tailing for many vehicles. No food or drink or flowers are placed to welcome you. For us it was a very cold reception with a guest book full of unhappy surprises, no help from the owner and manager, and five hours of cleaning towels and bedding, making beds for the next guest, mopping floors, hosing away bullfrog poop from the pool area, cleaning toilets, showers, sinks and refrigerators after we packed and before we were allowed to leave. Does that sound like a vacation?
The villa was lovely. It was a great value for the money, and was one of the nicer places we stayed in Costa Rica. We loved having the private pool. The kitchen was well equipped. We enjoyed walking to the "neighborhood" waterfall. There was a small snafu with check-in, but it wasn't a big deal and both the owner/host and the on-site property manager were extremely apologetic. Chris was very friendly and always very quick to respond in all of our communications.
What I didn't realize from the description on AirBnB was that it's essentially a duplex...even though the two villas don't share a wall, they're really close together. It was still very private as there is a concrete wall separating the two patio areas. It wasn't a problem for us, but just thought other potential guests might like to know. Our neighbors were a quiet family. The internet was pretty slow, even compared to other places in Costa Rica...maybe this is because it was the busy season. Again, not a problem for us since we weren't working, but it would've been very hard to do anything more than send a simple email.
Overall we had a wonderful experience...the valley and views are beautiful and we enjoyed the sunsets and wildlife. I would recommend this villa to a friend for sure.
