I arrived promptly at 3PM check-in. Gate was unlocked. I walk in to see someone using a broom to clean up spider webs among the trees. Her name is Roxanne (I think). She's pleasant and calm.
Nick comes out to advise me that the beddings were just drying and that the room wasn't quite ready, but he would give me the tour of the property. I was shown the outdoor kitchen, which didn't seem "usable." Nick assured me everything was there, pots/pans/utencils, to create a meal, but the oven was busted. I had actually hoped to cook my first dinner there, but decided in that split second to pass. 3 total toilets, all with their accompanying sinks adjacent. Of the 2 outdoor showers I loved how cozy the bamboo walled one felt, with the clawfoot tub. During my stay, it just so happened to be 2 nights of below freezing temps, and day time temps of only in the 40s. The thought of showering outside in these conditions intimidated me. Next the hot tub, pool table, books, movies, the CHICKENs, meditation platform, fire-pit, and the bikes. It was as the listing described.
I left so that Nick can finish preparing the room. I came back at about dusk, and all the property lights were on: The chandelier above the fire pit, Christmas lights (white) twinkled; all lighting a dim and created a cozy ambiance. Kind of like walking through a dim version of Disneyland's New Orleans Square. It was cold already at that time of the day. I knew I had to soak in the hot tub.
The jets were already running in the hot tub. It's one of those soft tubs. It was dark and I knew there was "stuff" floating in the water with me. I didn't want to know what it was I just got it out with the net. The water smelled weird, like old furniture. I knew I'd have to work hard to wash it away. The shower post was a bit frustrating with the poor water pressure.
Oh, I have to mention the towels were really thick and smelled freshly washed.
In my room the electric heater perfectly maintained a warm environment that I was comfortable enough to sleep with minimal clothing. Getting into the bed, it had a 4" memory foam pad and shredded memory foam pillow. The sheets were soft, of high thread count. IT WAS SO COZY! I got into bed and it cradled me like a yield cocoon. I slept so deeply that night...
My second night was very similar to night one except, instead of soaking in the hot tub, I filled the claw foot tub with HOT water and stared up into the dusky sky that was slowing filling with stars. I would say that that was the best 40mins of my stay... the tub area was out in the open but very private. I am now considering installing an outdoor tub in my own backyard.
Husband and I went for a weekend getaway. The place was smaller than imagined but just as relaxing as we hoped for. It was the perfect place for a weekend to just enjoy nature. There are trees all around, chickens roaming the space and a little cat who is the sweetest, friendliest cat ever. The outdoor (cold) shower was nice after sweating in the hot sun all day. The area by the fireplace is the best. It was so quiet there. However, if you're a light sleeper, we would suggest to rent another space there besides the hidden cabin in the back since that one is located right next to the chicken coop. We thought it was funny waking up to chickens clucking at 5AM but that could be only because we are city folk (hailing from NYC) and we don't really get to experience that. We would definitely go back!
It's a charming and quirky place to stay. It was very quiet and peaceful. The cabin is tiny which was fine for me as I was hardly there during the day.
The cabin was quite charming...friendly folks...chickens just outside our door...Deer Lodge around the corner...hiking trails and restaurants close by. I would highly recommend!
Absolutely lovely! The retreat is, simply put, a work of art. Getting to experience the genius and design skills of individuals is the main reason I opted for Airbnb over a traditional hotel room. Mark's propertry did not disappoint. Sara, the caretaker, is extremely sweet and helpful. We stayed in the hidden cabin and had a wonderful time. We spent are two days in Ojai exploring the town and hiking, but we could have just as easily spent that time lounging around the common areas of the property- including the hot tub, the outdoor kitchen, and the outdoor gaming area with a pool table. Everything inside the fences (and even the beautiful weldwork fences themselves!) tell a story about the inhabitants. If you're going to stay in the Ojai area, I cannot recommend staying with Mark and Sara highly enough- I certainly would again.
As a bonus there is a bar right around the corner (literally right around the corner) and another down the street, the Deer Lodge and The Hut respectively. But you'd never know it unless you actually wanted to go there. It made for a great way to unwind after most of the other places in town closed at 5:30pm.
Thank you for being such a great hostess, Sara!
For my first ever solo vacation, I took myself to Ojai and chose to stay at Meiners Oaks retreat. And it WAS A Treat.
Mark is magical. He has set his land up to be truly a retreat and a rejuvenating, whimsical haven. Claire who greeted me upon my arrival, was warm, generous, and happy to share about Ojai and all of its glory…from where to take the most lovely Yoga classes, to where to catch the best food, music, and hiking.
I loved my cabin. Cozy, and comfortable. Loved my lovely clucking chicken neighbors (their pen is right next to Hidden Cabin). Loved the assortment of books on the property. LOVED the outdoor bath and the chalkboard walled bathroom and the hammocks. I stayed two glorious nights…and will stay longer next time I check in.
Highly recommend Meiners Oaks. What a joy.
I appreciate Mark's hospitality. The place was clean and he even gave me some local honey for a cough I had at the time..
It was nice to have my own space to come home to.
It was a little loud on weekend nights.
