This charming, west-facing, ground floor, one-bedroom apartment is located on the north west of the island known as The Barbados Riviera’. ‘Bajan Blue’ is in an upscale, quiet residential area, only a 3 minute stroll to sandy beaches and the renowned Fishpot (website hidden) Elmo’s supermarket/sports bar is a 10 minute walk away and close by is the fabulous (email hidden) Charles marina and the historic town of Speightstown with its charming buildings, banks, supermarkets and waterfront restaurants. The apartment is modern, clean and well-furnished with views over a large, tropical garden planted with palms and fruit trees (pick a lime for your rum and coke) and adjacent to a gully. The location affords a great deal of privacy, apart from when the monkeys visit the fruit trees! Bajan Blue has ceramic tiles, ceiling fans and the bedroom has the benefit of air conditioning and a queen sized bed. The open plan living area has a kitchen which is furnished with an electric cooker, microwave, fridge, toaster and kettle; it is well-equipped with crockery, pots and pans plus a coffe-maker for your morning beverage. All linen and towels, including beach towels, are provided. The patio is equipped with a table, chairs and umbrella and a large umbrella, table and chairs are situated in the garden for al fresco dining. A hair dryer, iron and ironing board are available on request. Free WiFi. If you are looking for peace and quiet away from the tourist traps come to ‘Bajan Blue’; take a stroll to the beach or simply sit here and soak up the sun and wait for the amazing sunsets when you can sip your sundowner in the cool of the evening. In this part of the island you will enjoy a real taste of the Caribbean and meet the people of Barbados and experience their culture, try the local food and drink and dance under the stars to calypso.
The British ex-pat owners live on site and can offer help, advice and island tours.
The beautiful garden which the apartment faces. Sun if you want it but plenty of shade too provided by the trees and also a large umbrella. Sun loungers and chairs are available on the lawn.
Interaction with Guests
A great deal. We live on site and delight in showing our guests Speightstown and the north of the island.
Not in the least bit 'touristy'. We go where the locals go, eat local food and enjoy quiet beaches.
Good local bus service. Not necessary to hire a car. You can travel anywhere on the island for the price of just US$1. For example you can catch a bus from Speightstown to Oistins/Silver Sands/Rockley/Bathsheba.
Other Things to Note
There is a minimum booking period of 4 days. Checkout times by prior arrangement.
Smoking is allowed outside but not in the apartment - this is a Barbados Government ruling.
We would appreciate if it if you would let us know if you are bringing visitors into the apartment.
Jan and John have a beautiful home in the nicest of locations.
The apartment is completely separate from the main house with its own entrance. It is spotlessly clean and beautifully furnished and equipped.
Jan and John were very welcoming and great to chat to. They are on hand to answer questions or offer tips for restaurants and days out but they also respect your privacy.
I can absolutely recommend Jan and John as AirBnB hosts. I hope to return to Barbados and will be re-booking with them.
Our stay at the Bajan Blue was far better than we could have ever expected.
John kindly offered to pick us up from the airport when we arrived , this was great because we got a comfortable ride to the house , while also getting an informative tour of the area for a cheaper price than a taxi .
The house itself is gorgeous, and the guest apartment is lovely - it's clean and spacious , nice bath room, nice kitchen stocked with utensils if cooking is on your agenda. The best part about the house is the access to your own private terrace and then further into the garden, which is green and lush with palms and flowers - just beautiful! The house also has a great location , close to beaches and the town. Also close to the North Point of the island , which has breathtaking views and a great spot to have lunch! And ask about Good Times catamaran day sail.
Enjoy your own private beaches: even though they are public, you would rarely see more than 2 or 3 people, and that's on packed day.
Want to try local food: From sophisticated dishes at the Fish Pot to home style meals in Moontown. Try Jac's Pizza -- delicious for dinner or breakfast ;)
Enjoy interacting with the locals: Just say hi to the people in the vicinity. They will recognize you just after a couple of days. Everyone was so friendly , it was very refreshing!
If you are for clubs and trendy party, Speightstown is not the place : No clubs, no loud music, no trendy stuff. The party close to the Bajan Blue is laid back, local style, with a mix of tourists and locals hanging out enjoying live music with a couple of rums by the beach !
Sharon and Ozzy -- ooops I mean Jan and John ;) are wonderful hosts. They were so informative on the area and will tell you what's worth seeing -- of course they will understand if you choose not to listen to them ! But we found their advice to always be spot on! If it wasn't for them telling us about certain restaurants or beaches to visit -- we could have easily missed out on some of the best food and the best snorkeling. The two of them are also a hell of a good time !!! And enjoy a good Ozzy Osbourne impression -- Ha Ha!
John and Jan : Oscar and I just want you to know how much we appreciate the experience we had in Barbados - with you , with our turtle friends, the beaches , and all our local friends we made. Thank you for taking us in and showing us your island and sharing your stories -- so many laughs -- great memories -- thank you!
If you are looking for a carefree, comfortable vacation : Bajan Blue is the spot for you!
What an amazing holiday. All thanks to my great hosts Jon and Jan. Jan and Jon were wonderful hosts in a stunning home.
From the minute i booked and starting communicating with them, they offered to get some essential shopping in for when i got there, and then they picked me up from the airport, and showed me some great spots and introduced me to some of the local restauranteurs on the way to the apartment, to the moment they returned me to airport, everything was perfect.
They are great hosts and great ambassadors for their adopted home country. They say the people in Barbados are the most friendly in the Caribbean and they are true to this.
The Bajan Blue is exactly as it shows in the photos. The apartment is very clean and comfortable, with everything you need for your trip. Its tranquil bliss, away from the bigger resorts down the coast.
Jan and John live in the house connected to the apartment, and they are there as little or often as you want them to be. They always checked I had everything i needed, clean towels etc.
I enjoyed many a late afternoon sat in the beautiful garden with them both having a chat and a drink whilst the sun went down and i miss that back home.
The house is a couple of minutes walk from a lovely beach and great restaurant The Fish Pot. 5 minute walk away is a great place to go snorkeling and see the turtles, without the crowds further down on the west coast. There is a bus stop at the bottom of the road that will get you anywhere, most times I enjoyed a leisurely stroll instead of the bus into the local town Speightstown. I also enjoyed a couple of meals at the local fish fry up the road in Half Moon.
Whilst I was at home I was researching a catamaran trip, again they came to the rescue booking me onto one that they highly recommend. I enjoyed it so much I went on it twice.
I travelled solo and not once did I feel lonely or unsafe. Jan and Jon took me out with them to local nights at the pubs and to see a great live band. We also went upto the gorgeous and dramatic north point one afternoon. I met so many new friends and this was all thanks to the great hosts. Staying here gave me the holiday I wanted and that was a true Bajan experience, in comfortable, clean accommodation. The little gems of advise, tips and hospitality from the hosts made this holiday a trip to remember. I never go to the same country twice, but I will be back to the Bajan Blue to see Jan and Jon again. Thank you for making it a trip to remember.
Thank you John and Jan for your hospitality over our 10 days at Bajan Blue. I can't say that I'm ready to go back to work tomorrow - in fact a few more days of sunshine and rum sours would be very welcome, but we have had a truly relaxing and stress free holiday.
We came looking for peace and quiet and the real Barbados that sits beyond the west coast hotels, and that is what we found.
The information provided through your Airbnb listing was really helpful, and the reviews provided by your other guests were spot on. They by no means over-state the quality of accommodation in the apartment, the delightful surroundings, or the wonderful and supportive welcome you provide.
Highlights for us - wandering down to the beach in the mornings and sitting under our tree, watching the turtles at Six Mens, dinner at the wonderful Fish Pot, and scrumping limes from your garden to slip into our evening cocktails.
Advice for anyone else coming to stay with you - take up the offer of the lift to and from the airport (and the supermarket), don't miss out on dinner at the Fish Pot, don't be put off if there is nobody on the beach - we hardly saw another sole on the beach over 10 days, and if you don't manage to do anything other than chill and relax - don't worry, you're on holiday!
A warm welcome, beautiful & comfortable living space... Jan & John were wonderful hosts , helpful when needed... a quiet retreat to relax and enjoy
Jan & John are really wonderful hosts! Welcoming and helpful, giving us advice about the bus system, transportation and the best spots to visit, provided us with everything we needed for a day at the beach (not only towels but mats and chairs) and helped us to get the very best table at the Fish-Pot Restaurant as they are well-known there (you should not miss to go to this excellent restaurant which is only a 5 minute walk away – good food and a georgeous location!).
The apartment has everything you need, it is spacious und nicely furnished – with a balcony to the beautiful tropical garden, where you can sit and relax as well. John gave us a lift to Speightstown a few times and brought us to the bus station the day we left. It was really a pleasure meeting the two and staying in their lovely house.
We really liked the north of Barbados as it is not as touristic as the south, calm and friendly and you can experience a more authentic bajan lifestyle. There is a really nice beach just 15 minutes walk from the apartment (Heywood Beach). To go to Speightstown – which is very cosy – it takes a bit longer (about 25-30 minutes) but you can catch a bus to go there.
We totally recommend this place!
We really enjoyed our entire stay at Jan & John's lovely place. We took them up on their offer to pick us up from the airport and we are so happy we did. The ride back to their place evolved into a little tour of their side of the island which helped us to get a sense of the west coast of Barbados and they generously helped us out by stopping en route to pick up grocery supplies for the self catering we planned on doing. This saved us so much hassle in the end. The place is exactly as shown in pictures and quite comfortable environs. There was a lime tree in the back yard and we were told to take them as we needed. Our mornings here were nice and peaceful, which we greatly appreciated. It was one of our first mornings when we were even visited by some green monkeys! We made use of the wifi available and found it fast and easy. I was worried beforehand that I would miss the presence of a couch, but in the end it wasn't an issue at all. There was nothing that we wanted that wasn't there, and frankly, if there was something we know we could have counted on Jan & John to provide it! This was also the first rental we did where the hosts were on site and it was a great experience. John & Jan are such wonderful, thoughtful and generous people. They do provide a binder filled with lots of advice and suggestions (which we did peruse) but it was really great getting some of the local knowledge and advice directly from them. This definitely improved our experience. We got the impression that our hosts would have provided us with as much solitude as we wanted, but honestly our frequent chats and our one night drinking wine with them became part of the trip highlights! We did not rent a car and found it relatively easy getting around with the local transit (and a few lifts here and there from our gracious hosts). Also, we most definitely had the best fish of our entire trip at the fish fry at Moontown just north of Bajan Blue. Go to Oistins for the experience but go to Moontown for the food! (and a more local experience). As long as you are not looking to be in the high tourist, busy, "happening" area of the island at all times, you will not be disappointed in your choice to stay here.
John and Jan Shaw are originally from the UK but have lived on the beautiful island of Barbados for the last six years. We enjoy the laid back Caribbean lifestyle and can show you the 'real' Barbados.
