This charming, west-facing, ground floor, one-bedroom apartment is located on the north west of the island known as The Barbados Riviera’. ‘Bajan Blue’ is in an upscale, quiet residential area, only a 3 minute stroll to sandy beaches and the renowned Fishpot (website hidden) Elmo’s supermarket/sports bar is a 10 minute walk away and close by is the fabulous (email hidden) Charles marina and the historic town of Speightstown with its charming buildings, banks, supermarkets and waterfront restaurants. The apartment is modern, clean and well-furnished with views over a large, tropical garden planted with palms and fruit trees (pick a lime for your rum and coke) and adjacent to a gully. The location affords a great deal of privacy, apart from when the monkeys visit the fruit trees! Bajan Blue has ceramic tiles, ceiling fans and the bedroom has the benefit of air conditioning and a queen sized bed. The open plan living area has a kitchen which is furnished with an electric cooker, microwave, fridge, toaster and kettle; it is well-equipped with crockery, pots and pans plus a coffe-maker for your morning beverage. All linen and towels, including beach towels, are provided. The patio is equipped with a table, chairs and umbrella and a large umbrella, table and chairs are situated in the garden for al fresco dining. A hair dryer, iron and ironing board are available on request. Free WiFi. If you are looking for peace and quiet away from the tourist traps come to ‘Bajan Blue’; take a stroll to the beach or simply sit here and soak up the sun and wait for the amazing sunsets when you can sip your sundowner in the cool of the evening. In this part of the island you will enjoy a real taste of the Caribbean and meet the people of Barbados and experience their culture, try the local food and drink and dance under the stars to calypso.
The British ex-pat owners live on site and can offer help, advice and island tours.
The beautiful garden which the apartment faces. Sun if you want it but plenty of shade too provided by the trees and also a large umbrella. Sun loungers and chairs are available on the lawn.
Interaction with Guests
A great deal. We live on site and delight in showing our guests Speightstown and the north of the island.
Not in the least bit 'touristy'. We go where the locals go, eat local food and enjoy quiet beaches.
Good local bus service. Not necessary to hire a car. You can travel anywhere on the island for the price of just US$1. For example you can catch a bus from Speightstown to Oistins/Silver Sands/Rockley/Bathsheba.
Other Things to Note
There is a minimum booking period of 4 days. Checkout times by prior arrangement.
Smoking is allowed outside but not in the apartment - this is a Barbados Government ruling.
We would appreciate if it if you would let us know if you are bringing visitors into the apartment.
A warm welcome, beautiful & comfortable living space... Jan & John were wonderful hosts , helpful when needed... a quiet retreat to relax and enjoy
Jan & John are really wonderful hosts! Welcoming and helpful, giving us advice about the bus system, transportation and the best spots to visit, provided us with everything we needed for a day at the beach (not only towels but mats and chairs) and helped us to get the very best table at the Fish-Pot Restaurant as they are well-known there (you should not miss to go to this excellent restaurant which is only a 5 minute walk away – good food and a georgeous location!).
The apartment has everything you need, it is spacious und nicely furnished – with a balcony to the beautiful tropical garden, where you can sit and relax as well. John gave us a lift to Speightstown a few times and brought us to the bus station the day we left. It was really a pleasure meeting the two and staying in their lovely house.
We really liked the north of Barbados as it is not as touristic as the south, calm and friendly and you can experience a more authentic bajan lifestyle. There is a really nice beach just 15 minutes walk from the apartment (Heywood Beach). To go to Speightstown – which is very cosy – it takes a bit longer (about 25-30 minutes) but you can catch a bus to go there.
We totally recommend this place!
We really enjoyed our entire stay at Jan & John's lovely place. We took them up on their offer to pick us up from the airport and we are so happy we did. The ride back to their place evolved into a little tour of their side of the island which helped us to get a sense of the west coast of Barbados and they generously helped us out by stopping en route to pick up grocery supplies for the self catering we planned on doing. This saved us so much hassle in the end. The place is exactly as shown in pictures and quite comfortable environs. There was a lime tree in the back yard and we were told to take them as we needed. Our mornings here were nice and peaceful, which we greatly appreciated. It was one of our first mornings when we were even visited by some green monkeys! We made use of the wifi available and found it fast and easy. I was worried beforehand that I would miss the presence of a couch, but in the end it wasn't an issue at all. There was nothing that we wanted that wasn't there, and frankly, if there was something we know we could have counted on Jan & John to provide it! This was also the first rental we did where the hosts were on site and it was a great experience. John & Jan are such wonderful, thoughtful and generous people. They do provide a binder filled with lots of advice and suggestions (which we did peruse) but it was really great getting some of the local knowledge and advice directly from them. This definitely improved our experience. We got the impression that our hosts would have provided us with as much solitude as we wanted, but honestly our frequent chats and our one night drinking wine with them became part of the trip highlights! We did not rent a car and found it relatively easy getting around with the local transit (and a few lifts here and there from our gracious hosts). Also, we most definitely had the best fish of our entire trip at the fish fry at Moontown just north of Bajan Blue. Go to Oistins for the experience but go to Moontown for the food! (and a more local experience). As long as you are not looking to be in the high tourist, busy, "happening" area of the island at all times, you will not be disappointed in your choice to stay here.
Jan and John are the perfect hosts! Very kind and available for any need 24/7 ,they will recommend you the best spots to see around the island and will even organize for restaurants upon request and a peaceful relaxing sailing trip on a splendid catamaran that is real value for money!!! The falt is gorgeous and the whole house is a piece of paradise very well embellished. A big hug and thanks to Jan and John for the time spent together.
This was like no airbnb we have ever had! We intended to stay with jan and john for only five nights but ended up staying the remaining ten days of our holiday! Not just because of the location - peaceful, convenient - it was because jan and john were amongst the most wonderful people we've met!
They advised us on places to eat and were always spot on, john went out of his way to make sure we got a table at our favorite place on our last night and we spent many evenings chilling out with j&j and the lovely dogs / cats over a rum or ten...
I can't recommend this place enough. They built the house and you feel the care and love that's been put into it throughout. It's truly a piece of paradise.
We didn't hire a car so j&j either drove us around and joined us on an island tour, or we took the local buses up and down the coast which was super easy and cheap.
After a grueling Canadian winter, Jan and John were tropical angels who guided us to wonderful beaches, vendors, and restaurants around Speighstown, Barbados.
Against their advice, we took the local bus service from the airport to Speighstown. Take the taxi! Even better, if offered, please accept Jan and John’s ride. Do not be tempted to be frugal. After a long flight, an immediate and direct route to their wonderful home in paradise was much needed in order to start relaxing and enjoying this incredible locale.
Once you’ve dropped off your luggage and shed your winter shell, the bus system is an excellent way to get around the island. Bajans are friendly and very helpful. If you’re not sure where you’re going, you can trust Bajans to point you the right direction.
The photos of the suite do not do it justice. It’s simple and elegant. It’s quite accessible from the front gate. The kitchen will have everything you will need. The patio is wonderful and spacious for two people where you can bask in the late afternoon sun while sipping beer or rum punch. The bedroom has large wardrobe with plenty of room. The bed is comfortable. You can open two windows in the evening that can provide a cool cross-draft while you sleep. The big beauitful backyard has palm and coconut trees with a bird pool. Throughout the day you’ll see a variety of animals (birds, geckos, dogs, cats, and monkeys!). The yard also has variety of chairs, lawn-chairs, and tables. You will not need an alarm because you can trust the Caribbean Elaenias, Carib Grackles, and other various birds to chirp and cheer your morning rise.
Bajan Blue is located in a safe, quiet, well-lit neighbourhood. It’s close to a beach with a string of vendors, bars, and restaurants along the water. There’s an incredible local fish market (on Six Men’s) which we regretfully did not take advantage of.
Jan and John are courteous, charming, and quite welcoming. They did everything they could to make us feel comfortable and happy. For a pair of slightly timid Canadians, we could not ask for better hosts.
Thank you, Jan and John, for a delightful week. We hope to see you soon.

John and Jan Shaw are originally from the UK but have lived on the beautiful island of Barbados for the last six years. We enjoy the laid back Caribbean lifestyle and can show you the 'real' Barbados.
