You’ll love the serenity of our secluded location and gorgeous views of the rain forest and river. Delight in taking photos & videos of the abundant & diverse wildlife such as birds & monkeys that live in trees around our house. Hand-feed bananas to wild kinkajous. Enjoy a delicious home-cooked dinner. Sleep in comfort and wake up to bird songs and a hearty breakfast. We are confident that you'll find River Wildlife Sanctuary to be an excellent choice that offers high value and happy memories.

The space
The nearby river, rain forest, and open habitats around our house attract a variety of wildlife. Crickets will lull you to sleep and bird songs provide a morning wake up call. As a birding hotspot you can enjoy a myriad of wild birds around our house. In season, you can also view many over-wintering and migratory birds eating bananas from a feeder tray. During Spring and Summer nights, bio-luminescent click beetles ("fireflies ") flash their signals to prospective mates. Also check out the amazing night sky, where the darkness is clear of pollution by city lights.

To get a preview of our adorable, cute, & gentle kinkajou visitors, search for the short video that we posted on YouTube: "Feeding Wild Kinkajous In Belize". You can take photos and videos of these very adorable and friendly “night-walkers” as they eat bananas right out of your hand! No other guest accommodation in Belize offers this experience. Also see photos of kinkajous in this listing.

Our spacious house on a bluff overlooking the Belize River affords a comfortable living area for you and family. From one guest bedroom and the guest bathroom you will have a view of the river. You can hear the soothing sounds of river riffles while you drift off to sleep.

From the sidewalk you might see howler monkeys draped over a nearby tree branch taking a nap while young ones play nearby. Or you may be lucky to see them only 20 feet away crossing a rope bridge that we installed for their access to their feeding areas.

Guest access
Guests will have access to the lower level of our house, including two bedrooms, a bathroom with a river view, living/dining areas, limited kitchen use (microwave, refrigerator), and laundry. There are three exits on the lower level, one a private entrance. There is unlimited high speed internet throughout our house.

Other things to note
A flat screen TV is available for viewing movies and materials on Maya or photos or videos that you may want to view on a large screen. We do not have access to TV programs via cable or antenna, but we have unlimited high speed internet.

You are expected provide your own drinks. If you fly to Belize you can buy liquor and wine at the duty free store at the international airport. Prices there are appreciably lower than in local markets.

Water from our household taps is treated by the Belize Water Service and is drinkable. However, we provide bottled water because of it’s superior taste.

We have a back-up generator in case of a power outage. However, such events are very infrequent.

A chain link fence encloses 3 acres (1.2 ha.) surrounding our house.
We have four dogs (all friendly to our guests): two German shepherds, who stay outdoors, and two lap dogs who sleep indoors at night.

Access to the Belize River (90 feet below) is by a trail from the house.

Tropical trees surrounding the house provide homes and food for the wildlife. Wild orchids of many species, including vanilla, adorn trees around house. Peggy is very willing to show you her orchids if you request.

Much of the time our banana plants and fruit trees provide plentiful fruit for your breakfast fruit plate. This is supplemented by local markets.

We can also provide guidance to Belize attractions. We have kayaks for your use on the Belize River and can drop you off at a launching point for a two hour trip down the river to our property.

We have wireless internet and fans in most rooms. A cell phone with local SIM card is available for loan. A patio with barbecue provides a shady and appealing sitting area.

Like other guest accommodations in Belize, we are required to pay a 9% accommodation tax to the Belize Tourism Bureau. Because there is no automatic payment of the tax during the booking process, it is necessary to collect that amount from our guests.

Location

Teakettle, Cayo, Belize

Secluded, quiet and safe. Belmopan is about 15 minutes away and there is a small convenience grocery store about a mile from us. Many of our guests enjoy the dinners that we provide as an option, instead of driving to the nearest restaurant about five miles away. On Sundays, we highly recommend a nearby restaurant that is only open on weekends.

We are about 5 minutes away from Teakettle Village, where tour companies pick up passengers for the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave. We are also central to numerous other attractions reached via the Western and Hummingbird highways.

My wife Peggy and I enjoy meeting travelers and learning about where they live and have traveled. My goal is to facilitate a comfortable stay and enriching experiences for our guests at River Wildlife Sanctuary. I like to help guests plan their trips and, where possible, arrange for small discounts on adventure tours. With 32 years as a national park ranger naturalist, I know how to assist guests in having the best possible experience during their limited time in Belize. I am an experienced photographer and like to advise guests about getting great photos. As a special experience for our guests we provide kayaks for use on a two-hour float down the Belize River to a dock at our property. Peggy is an excellent cook and enjoys preparing breakfasts and delicious dinners for guests.
