This well-known 'Georgian Townhouse' is the home of Steve McPhilemy, Ireland's renowned travel-writer and professional tour-guide. Refurbished 3 years ago by a local interior-designer friend. Therefore this architectural gem is not only uber-funky, modern and luxurious; it is also a haven for travellers and an oasis of local tourism info & tips! (ps did I remember to mention the Jacuzzi?)
This truly is one of Derry's finest family homes, slap-bang in the city centre!
Located on the quiet and exclusive 'Lawrence Hill' neighbourhood, which connects the Strand Road & the Northand Road.
Everything is nearby. 1 minute walk to BBC Radio Foyle, Universtiy of Ulster (Magee) and the North West Regional College (45 seconds walk to their side entrance!).
Glorious views of the river Foyle and the Peace-Bridge. Pretty-much 5 minutes walk to everything of interest in Derry city-centre!
6 bedrooms (4 ensuite). With an extra long living-room and the biggest Leather sofas youre likely to encounter on all your travels!
Super fast WiFi, cable TV, outdoor parking, gorgeous modern kitchen.
Most of the other homes in Lawrence Hill are family-occupied, the homes of Lawyers, Doctors, Teachers, other professionals and their children. There are also some student-houses and one or two retired couples enjoying their retirement in this peaceful river-side oasis in our otherwise bustling and active city-centre.
So we are NOT party, party, party, but more of a quality, authentic and relaxed place to stay.
Our views are the BEST, especially from the rooms beside the Jacuzzi, overlooking the Peace Bridge and the river Foyle as it meanders to towards the Atlantic.
Occurs at Paddys Palace Hostel, 1 Woodleigh Terrace, Asylum Road, Derry, BT48 7ED. Open 8am-10pm. The staff here will bring you to the apartment and give you a warm welcome, instructions and assistance.
Or if previously arranged with apartment owner, Steve McPhilemy, the staff-member can meet you at the 'Georgian Townhouse'.
Remember we have a great central location, Lawrence Hill. It is between the Northland Road and the Strand Road, the main west-bank city-centre road running north-south and parallel with the River Foyle.
This was my first airbnb experience and I had such a great time staying with Stephen. He was a fantastic host, giving me loads of info about Derry and even upgrading me to a waterside apartment! I was a lone female traveller and I felt very safe and comfortable and would highly recommend it to anyone.
Where do I even begin? This was such a fantastic stay and a great opportunity in so many ways. The house is simply splendid with great vibes. I only wish I had the time to strike the fireplace in the downstairs living area. The kitchen was a blessing, large open and full of all amenanties you need to make a serious meal or a quick bite, or simply store food. I used it daily- buying food in nearby Tesco is a breeze, and many times I had the kitchen to myself and other times it became the meeting point to get to know other guests visiting from all over the world. His manager Eileen was indispensable as I ended up employing her for some work while there. The city was vibrant and full of energy during the Lumiere festival but Derry Londonderry in general is just really a fantastic beutiful walled city that has a rich history, a hard past and bright future. The people of the city, are amazing. The Irish are known for their hospitality and they are just plain beautiful and friendly people. The house is situated on one of many Derry's hills so as you step outside you get a fantastic perspective of the city from on top! It is fairly close to all locations and if you get tired from walking there are plenty of city taxis you can ring -for just a few pounds you will be home. I only wish I could have stayed longer to catch one of the many tours offered from the city. Next time! Last but not least, the best part of the stay was the host- Stephen he was amazing help and he was communicating with me throughout the process and hooking me up in so many ways! Thanks Stephen for all your help, your kind hospitality and your fantastic home you offer to us travelers. Ring me if you are in NYC!
Maria is an AirBnB stalwart. An experienced AirBnB host and and ideal AirBnB guest!
I enjoyed her stay so much, we shared ideas on hosting and what AirBnB guests look for, she never complained but gave invaluable constructive input. She even hired my hostel manager Eileen to help her film her documentary on the Lumiere Festival, which was good for Eileen financially but more importantly provided her with invaluable experience on her path to becoming a film-maker and fulfilling her dream.
It was an honour to have an American documentary-maker and a prolific AirBnB host choose my Townhouse as a place to stay for an entire week!
Lawrence Hill ticks all the boxes. It is a beautiful house with views of the city and river. The location is central, being only a short walk from cinemas, theatres and the famous city walls. The kitchen is well appointed and the sitting room is welcome after a busy day sightseeing. The bedrooms are well appointed and spacious. The house has a wonderful positive energy and we enjoyed our stay immensely. Stephen was very accommodating and communicated with us regularly. I would recommend Lawrence Hill without hesitation. Go and stay enjoy the house and enjoy the beautiful city of Derry.
Thanks Justin, for staying and for being an excellent guest. You represent what the AirBnB community is all about - enthusiastic travellers who are looking for interesting and refreshing accommodation-spaces at an affordable price. Very welcome to come back at any time in future! Glad you enjoyed the Lumiere festival and our historic city.
It was inexpensive and the location was good but other than that, don't expect too much. The walls and floors were thin such that I heard everyone walking around all the time and the rooms were cold in November. If you just want to save money, this is fine, but other than the price and the friendly staff, don't expect anything.
Hi Eyal, you made 3 positive points about my 6-bedroom Derry Townhouse that every AirBnB host would be delighted to hear
2. good location
3. friendly staff
BUT you then tel the AirBnB Community 'dont expect too much'?? Im slightly confused. What did you expect exactly for £25 per night?
Oh, and Eyal, you forgot to mention one important point, YOU decided to stay an extra night. So the 'thin walls' cant have been that bad if you voluntarily and happily stayed an extra night.
ps Im sorry Eyal, but with respect, once you wrote in your review that the the floors were 'thin' I really could not take the comments seriously anymore.
Stephen was an amazing host. He gave us a complimentary upgrade to his riverfront apartment for all 3 nights. Even though we didn't get a chance to meet him, we stayed in touch daily via email and he gave us clear instruction on check-in and check-out procedures. His team at the hostel was very friendly and helpful, especially Eileen, who welcomed us on our arrival. Definitely recommend!
Thanks Karbo and Jason, glad you enjoyed the upgrade! ;)
Best wishes with the rest of your Irish adventures and remember to continue to email me should you have any more Irish travel questions, as a professional tour-guide - giving Irish travel-tips is what I do best!
hope to meet up with you in Vancouver one day.
Is mise le meas/from me to you with respect
We are a couple and we stayed at Stephen's place over night. It was very pleasant experience, Stephen even not being there, was very responsive and managed things to our full satisfaction. The room was simply decorated, but clean, tidy, spacious, the bed was big and comfy. We used the huge and fully equipped kitchen for a breakfast. The city centre is in walking distance. I cannot recommend this place more, fantastic value for the money.
Staying in. Stephens place is bang for buck. You get a lot of space for a small amount of money. The townhouse is big, and we had it all to ourselves. It is situated really near downtown-derry, and close to lots of cultural places we wanted to visit.
There were only minor things to take note of. It was warm at night, but leaving the window open will make you hear busy streets, with lots of sirens as the fire department is pretty close. Also, cooking in the kitchen takes some improvisation as some cooking gear is absent. That being said, cooking can be done and the kitchen is quite spacious with a good oven and big fridge.
The jacuzzi mentioned in the ad did not have a plug unfortunately, but again, with some improv the water stayd in. Sadly, there was not enough hot water to fill it up, so you would sit in a cold bath.
We would definitely recommend this townhouse though, since hosts are superfriendly and relaxed and the townhouse is still being renovated. We're sure it will get better and better over (website hidden): the pooltable and piano present are very cool!
