The Space

A comfortable, huge Georgian bedroom with gorgeous wooden floors. This bedroom has a shared bathroom.
The room has a leather sofa-bed and a very nice Kingsize bed.
It has a very unique piece of furniture : the 'Dr. Who' wardrobe!

The Townhouse has a full-time live-in Manager and is home to tour-guide Stephen McPhilemy, it is also a haven for travellers and an oasis of local tourism info & tips!

This truly is one of Derry's finest family homes, slap-bang in the city centre!
Located on the quiet and exclusive 'Lawrence Hill' neighbourhood, which connects the Strand Road & the Northand Road.

Everything is nearby. 1 minute walk to BBC Radio Foyle, Universtiy of Ulster (Magee) and the North West Regional College (45 seconds walk to their side entrance!).
Glorious views of the river Foyle and the Peace-Bridge. Pretty much 5 minutes walk to everything of interest in Derry city-centre!
With an extra long living-room and the biggest Leather sofas you're likely to encounter on all your travels!
Super fast WiFi, cable TV, outdoor parking, gorgeous modern kitchen.

Most of the other homes in Lawrence Hill are family-occupied, the homes of lawyers, doctors, teachers, other professionals and their children. There are also some student-houses and one or two retired couples enjoying their retirement in this peaceful river-side oasis in our otherwise bustling and active city-centre.

So we are NOT party, party, party, but more of a quality, authentic and relaxed place to stay.

Remember we have a great central location, Lawrence Hill. It is between the Northland Road and the Strand Road, the main west-bank city-centre road running north-south and parallel with the River Foyle.

Guest Access

Shared bathroom (shared between 2 bedrooms) with shower and a freestanding bath-tub.
Massive modern Kitchen.

The Neighborhood

Quiet and peaceful, safe street with on-street car-parking. Perfect location in city-centre right beside University and North-West Regional College.

Check In

  • Large spartan room in extremely noisy, hostelstyle house.
    Not particularly clean or comfortable.
    Very handy position

  • The house is beautiful. The room very spacious. The parking was easy. The location is very good, quiet and good for walking around or to the city center. We felt it was kind of a university neighbourhood, like Cambridge, very cute city.
We had some good recommandations for restaurants but already all booked, so we couldn't try them but they looked very good and not too expensive.
The place was cosy but the bed a little firm for our taste, kind of like a futon mattress.

  • Not quite what we expected, however I see Stephen has since updated his listing.
If you want what is listed then you will get it.
Clearly used for students accommodation, the contact details were updated however I had booked a while ago and AirBNB had not made allowance hence my reservation contained the old information.
The room makes no attempt to block any light at all including street light so that you can see clearly 24/7 (an issue for me trying to sleep).
More like a youth hostel than a BnB.

  • Very large room, probably the largest I've stayed in while in Europe. Location is far from main areas but derry is small enough to maneuver from most places.

  • We stayed for 2 days in Room 2 at the 1. Floor and we loved it. It is very spacious and the old substance of the house is nicely preserved. Also the bathroom is a jewel and equipped with a good shower. Steven is a very informed, open-minded and captivating personality, a real networker and a perfect host. We got from him many interesting glimpses into recent local history. We would have liked to stay for longer.

Mick was a wonderful guest, I really enjoyed welcoming him and hosting him and discussing the history/politics of Northern Ireland with him for ages in my huge kitchen...

  • Great big room. Great light. Was very quiet when I was a guest. Could be the perfect spot for banging out a bit of writing if there was a desk or some such. I didn't use the kitchen 'cepting to make tea but it was very very roomy. On a very pleasant hilly street with some Uni buildings at the end.

    Response from Stephen:

Thanks sir, we actually have writing desks in 4 of our 7 bedrooms, so next time you come back to our accommodation, we will definitely provide you with one. Its always VERY exciting to have writers come and stay (and write) at our beautiful city-centre townhouse in Derry.

  • "Deluxe" is a bit of an exaggeration. It was a lovely big bare room in an "under construction" townhouse. What has been completed is quite nice and the period personality has been preserved where possible. The bed wasn't very comfortable, though we were plenty warm. Getting in late was convenient, as one of the tenants had our keys. The location was convenient to the city so we could leave the car and do a walking tour.

    Response from Stephen:

    Hi Debra,
Thanks for the mostly positive comments and thank-you for choosing to stay with us.
    Just need to clarify
    1. we are not under any construction, Im not sure what you mean by this, we havent had construction or workmen in the house since 2005 (I think we travellers in the airbnb community need to choose our descriptive words properly to ensure they are accurate for other travellers)
    2. Sorry about the bed, I have always found it impeccably comfortable
    3. The 'tenant' who gave you the keys, works for me, Marcus.

Im happy you enjoyed our city-centre location, it really is handy for everything my fantastic hometown of Derry has to offer

    Happy travels

  • Nice and clean. Walking distance to pubs and restaurants. A bit noisy. I can't remember the name of the girl who worked there (from Bowen Island, Canada) but she was so kind and helpful.

  • Lawrence Hill in Derry is a nice quiet street. The house looked ok from outside but the front door could do with another coat of paint. We were not greeted by the host, however, the girl was very pleasant and showed us to our room. We did not get the room that we thought we had booked as it was initially not free Friday night but it was free Saturday. However, we did get an email late Thursday night to confirm that the room was free both Friday and Saturday which we then booked. The room we got was a family room with bunk beds and double bed and sofa. I would have liked a bedside locker with a lamp, however on the plus side we did have an en suite (but with no toilet paper). Pillows pretty poor quality as well. The room was a good size but it also had no curtains, just pull down blinds so we were awake very early with the sun shining in the windows. To be honest the place felt more like a hostel than a townhouse. We were able to book a bed only in a B&B in Galway for the Sunday night for 39 euro which was good value compared to what we got in Derry.

I was born in Derry and have runsuccessful and award-winning tourist-accommmodation for over 10 years. I am lucky enough to own a luxury river-front Apartment and also a 7 bedroom Townhouse, both in the city-centre; which I rent out to couples, familes and vacationing professionals on short-term stays. Sometimes (website hidden) guests who are Students, Professors or Professionals come and stay for longer at my properties, one even booked for 3 months! The apartment is very high-end and and luxurious. It really has the 'wow-factor'. You pay more and you get more! I work as a professional tour-guide with US travel TV star, Rick Steves. This year I had the honour of being one of 4 judges in a very high-profile competition organised by our national newspaper, the Irish Times - my job was to use my expertise to decide "The Best Place to Holiday in Ireland!" To stay true to my backpacking roots, I decided to open up my 7 bedroom Townhouse in the exclusive 'Lawrence Hill' area (city-centre, 1 minute from the University) to budget-conscious visitors, who basically want a cheap room with a great location. These rooms are £25-£50 depending on whether it is 2 or 6 people in the room, some of the rooms are HUGE, and ensuite. The Lawrence Hill property is quite lovely in my honest opinion, but several of the guests there have proved a little harder to please. Most think it is a great place and excellent value for money, i just need you to know that it is a room for a cheap price, it is not Buckingham Palace, nor does it have the wow-factor of my riverfront apartment, But for the price, most guests think its great, check out the pics on my listing. I will be happy welcome you to any of my lovely properties and to help introduce to you my beloved home region of Derry/Donegal. Needless to say, free Travel tips/advice is my speciality Le meas (with respect in Irish Gaelic) Steve McPhilemy
