738 Chestnut @ Squid Row. Santa Cruz CA (phone number hidden)
The parking: There is street parking available and a covered garage located one block away on Cedar st. If you arrive via train, plane or rocketship we can send a shuttle for you from any of the surrounding airports: San Jose is 45 min way, Monterey 70min. If you need wheels while in the area Zipcar offers cars right near us. In a pinch we'll lend our mini cooper convertible, tandem bicycle or unicycle.
The environ: Industrial in nature the Enterprise Ironworks once contributed historically as an early manufacture spot for gold rush pick axe and shovel.
It's always been a creative space, and the charming Alley of Squid Row is adjacent to the building.
The history: As mentioned the gold rush prompted a brisk business of pick axe and shovel, later on the building served as warehouse/workshop for early Santa Cruz developer Max Walden. The Cooper House was also a Walden Property. The iconic Cooper House spirit still resides here, with a few doors and light fixtures serving as functional history and art. The artist Michael Leeds work is featured throughout the building.
The location: A quiet street of residential sprinkled with a few great health and beauty services, three yoga studios including Body & Soul located in the building. Our local is in close proximity to downtown, yet we offer a world away feeling with easy access to Hwy 1, 17, and 9. The ocean and redwoods offer a backdrop.
We are in a quiet enclave of historically significant Santa Cruzian wonders. The Mission Hill train tunnel just across the street is backdrop to a 1903 snap of then President Teddy Roosevelt en route to Big Basin, historic Victorian homes line Walnut avenue and of course the best slice of downtown Santa Cruz is simply a street away. Cedar St is home to the Penny Ice Creamery, Gabriela's, Planet Fresh, The Limelight Cafe, Jack's Burgers, Cafe Bene and Kuwumba jazz.
The location. Quiet enough to hear nearby frogs. Bike to Neary Lagoon, the beach and the Redwoods of Hwy 9. We are ten min to UCSC, walking distance to the downtown Farmers Market, Sunday Antique Fair.
Our walkable neighborhood offers you as much/little as you'd like to explore. The event space 7 Squid Row is a working art studio and creative space that hosts community, and private events, First Friday Art openings and educational offerings thru Art duJour. If we can offer any other local knowledge for an authentic travel experience please call or email.
What to pack: We are located within a Banana Belt of sunny skies or is it a Banana Slug with a sweater? Both really. Bring a sweater or wrap for chilly coastal evenings, and sun screen. It's always a little of both typically.
What to do: We are big fans of all things local. A few things worthy of your time might be Friday Mornings at the Flea Market (short drive) the butterfly park, redwoods along Hwy 9, Warriors Basketball just down the street.
Roaring Camp railroad, The Big Dipper roller coater at The Boardwalk. A stroll thru Bookshop Santa Cruz.
Wonderful place. The description, photos, and previous reviews are a very good reflection of what to expect. This is NOT a traditional accommodation, so if you are looking for that, you should look somewhere else. But this place is a great experience for those looking for something unique. It is private and quiet. The bed was very comfortable, the hot water was plentiful and the water pressure great, the kitchen stocked, and it was very clean. The location was perfect for exploring downtown, and the overall experience was special. It was chilly in the morning, and I didn't see a thermostat - so bring warm PJs. The street parking pass is a great bonus. The WiFi was fast and reliable. Christine was responsive and helpful. Definitely recommend.
I took my girlfriend on a weekend getaway in Santa Cruz and Christine made it extra special. She was very accommodating and the space was exactly as described. We loved the little details that were put into creating such a unique home. From the beautiful signage and woodwork to the ornate bathroom. In particular we really liked relaxing on the porch, sipping mimosas, and basking in the all-day sun.
Christine's place is absolutely amazing! I took my girlfriend there for a valentines day retreat and it was perfect. The roof deck with a clear view of the stars was very romantic, and you can really get lost in all the wonderful details of the artwork / woodwork / interiors. It was just a short walk to anything we needed in funky downtown santa cruz. I'd happily stay there again.
The photos do not do this place justice, this home is STUNNING!! I cannot wait to book this location again!
I planned a birthday weekend with my dear sister here. It is a sweet place, full of character! The workmanship is really quite amazing! Christine gave me enough information up front to get us situated and feel welcome.
Awesome stay at the Stage Coach! Would definitely recommend staying for longer (we could only do 1 night) but we had a great time - so many nooks for lounging and the place itself is so interesting and so well-situated. Thanks, Christine!
Beautiful, characterful apartment! As expected from the pictures. Good location close to shopping, coffee, restaurants, yoga.
