The neighborhood

El Raval is a neighbourhood in the Ciutat Vella district of Barcelona, Spain. The area, especially the part closest to the port, was also informally known as Barri Xinès or Barrio Chino, meaning "Chinatown". El Raval is one of the two historical neighborhoods that border La Rambla, the other being the Barri Gòtic, and contains some 50,000 people.

An area historically infamous for its nightlife and cabarets, as well as prostitution and crime, El Raval has changed significantly in recent years and due to its central location has become a minor attraction of Barcelona.

The northern border of the neighborhood is marked by Plaça Catalunya and Plaça Universitat, and the street which connects them, Carrer de Pelai. It ends in the east with La Rambla, and in the west and south, the neighborhood is delimited by Ronda Sant Antoni, Ronda Sant Pau and Avinguda del Paral·lel.

There are a few historical monuments such as the Monastery of Sant Pau del Camp, as well as newer additions such as the Rambla del Raval, and the MACBA (the Contemporary Art Museum of Barcelona) or the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona.

In the southern part of the neighborhood an old wall and gate of the medieval city called Portal de Santa Madrona still exists as part of the Maritime Museum. The Raval is also known for its large statue of a cat by Fernando Botero, located on the Rambla del Raval. The city's most famous market, La Boqueria, is also situated in the Raval.

In the east of the neighbourhood, Antoni Gaudí's Palau Güell is located on the Carrer Nou de la Rambla.

I never met Richard, but phoned him when we arrived, we were able to check in 1 hour early, which was nice. We took the Aerobus then walked a good 10-15 minutes with our luggage. Thank God we walked during the day. El Raval has a Hipster vibe, lots of immigrants, and many streets are seedy. I did not feel safe walking at night, which is why during my time in Spain, I used a taxi, only for this location. maps also provides a warning and advises you to "Use Caution". There was also a sign on the door that there have been multiple "attacks" in the building and against guests in this building. Seems like there are multiple units here being rented out to AirBnB guests. This made me feel very uneasy, I texted Richard and he assured me all was safe. Fortunately, nothing happened, but I would not stay here if I had brought my children. There was plenty of noise to keep me up. The apartment was very clean and all of the pictures are accurate. The apartment is quite roomy and the furnishings are up to date. I do wish, however, that there were extra pillows, but it wasn't a deal breaker. All in all, it was okay. We survived Barcelona. :)

Nice place but we weren't made aware of the building work above our heads. We were told upon entry it was going to stop the next day (when we arrived there was constant hammering) but at 8am the next day intense hammering commenced above our heads. We had to book in elsewhere for the following night because it was unbearable and my pregnant wife could hack it no longer!

Great location, quite noisy at night and early morning but that's probably standard for Barcelona city centre. Nice, clean apartment, and great view from balcony in one direction. Shower was uncomfortably hot, despite our best efforts to reduce the temperature. View from other side of balcony less impressive. Check in process far too complex compared to our other experiences with airbnb. Very difficult if you do not have a local phone. Overall we had good time staying here, and loved Barcelona. The apartment looks nice and it's just a shame it was tainted by some easily resolved issues.

Great location and plenty of room. It was a bit loud which is to be expected given that it's near everything but just something to think about if traveling with kids. Pretty basic set up and like some of the other reviews mentioned no real warm homey feeling but it's good otherwise.

The apartment is perfect for those who want to experience the city culture to the fullest... The host and his team are the most kind and supportive people ... we had a bad experience during the visit to the beach and they help us inmediately ... amazing loving people ... you won't find this anywhere else. Thanks

Had a pleasant stay in Richard's apartment - clean, comfortable, and accurately described. Neighbourhood is super convenient and right by La Rambla. One thing to note: the apartment is quite dim during the day and not much light gets in due to the surrounding buildings - sunlight only really hits the apartment for an hour in the afternoon. Otherwise had a great stay. Thanks Richard :)
