El Raval is a neighbourhood in the Ciutat Vella district of Barcelona, Spain. The area, especially the part closest to the port, was also informally known as Barri Xinès or Barrio Chino, meaning "Chinatown". El Raval is one of the two historical neighborhoods that border La Rambla, the other being the Barri Gòtic, and contains some 50,000 people.
An area historically infamous for its nightlife and cabarets, as well as prostitution and crime, El Raval has changed significantly in recent years and due to its central location has become a minor attraction of Barcelona.
The northern border of the neighborhood is marked by Plaça Catalunya and Plaça Universitat, and the street which connects them, Carrer de Pelai. It ends in the east with La Rambla, and in the west and south, the neighborhood is delimited by Ronda Sant Antoni, Ronda Sant Pau and Avinguda del Paral·lel.
There are a few historical monuments such as the Monastery of Sant Pau del Camp, as well as newer additions such as the Rambla del Raval, and the MACBA (the Contemporary Art Museum of Barcelona) or the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona.
In the southern part of the neighborhood an old wall and gate of the medieval city called Portal de Santa Madrona still exists as part of the Maritime Museum. The Raval is also known for its large statue of a cat by Fernando Botero, located on the Rambla del Raval. The city's most famous market, La Boqueria, is also situated in the Raval.
In the east of the neighbourhood, Antoni Gaudí's Palau Güell is located on the Carrer Nou de la Rambla.

My wife and I enjoyed our stay in Barcelona at Kristian's apartment in El Raval. Kristian and his associates were helpful and timely in their responses to my questions. The apartment was spacious and well appointed. The location to Barcelona sights like La Rambla, MACBA, and the Sant Antoni metro stop made this apartment desirable. The neighborhood felt very local--we enjoyed not being surrounded by tourists. That being said, there was loud street noise late into the evening.
Great apartment on a central location.
Me and my parents felt safe and relaxed. It was clean and had everything we could ask for - washing mashine, blow dryer.
Super nice! I would definetly recommend this apartment.
The flat is located nearby ramblas and metro station. So it is very convenient to go anywhere. The apartment is a bit old but inside space seems to be recently renovated. It was clean in good condition. It has little terrace with small table. Even though it is small, It was very nice having it. I enjoyed drink there after the end of day. Kristian is very kind guy and helpful. He makes me think that Barcelona has very nice people. One thing that I felt uncomfortable was ouside of house is a bit loud at nighttime. But I was very tired and come back home at late night It was not very big deal.
Kristian's place was very nice and just as in the pictures. The place was clean and the balcony was great to sit and people watch. It was close to the metra and nice places to eat. We had a problem with the WiFi and Kristian had it fixed right away.
Our stay in Barcelona was fantastic. The apartment was very clean and very well situated. It is well equipped with everything we would need. We requested a late check out due to our flight only leaving at 5pm. Kristian instead recommended a luggage storage facility which worked out very well for us as they had another booking for that day. Thank you for a great stay!
L’appartement est super bien placé, très bien équipé et très propre.
Nous avons été accueillies en sortant du taxi et le départ était très facile, sachant qu’il fallait juste sortir de l’appartement et fermer la porte. Nous recommandons vivement cet appartement.
We were handled by Kristian's service in regards to the apartment. Several people served to complete the process by which we eventually found ourselves in the flat.
The pictures were accurate and we were happy with the information provided but for the fact we seemed to not understand the particulars of the WiFi, however once we contacted Kristian we were connected easily to what is by far the best WiFi we have ever had at an Airbnb.
The bedroom was small but had storage enough for us and our three bags. The bed was comfortable with simple bedding provided.
There was a large living room and big table for eating. The kitchen was simple, a very good fridge, kettle and microwave. Not a lot of cooking utensils or pots and pans but plates a day cups enough.
The bathroom was nicely renovated and the shower had good supply of water both in pressure and hot water. There is a washing machine but no dryer however drying rack is supplied on the small balcony accessed by the shuttered windows in the living area and the master bedroom.
The third room held a single bed and dresser, it was well insulated and provided the most peaceful rest from the hustle and bustle of the Raval area which is a consideration for those seeking rest without the use of earplugs. In fact we were awoken by jack hammering inside the building one morning at 8:30.
With that being said this accommodation is ideally suited for exploration of Barcelona and served as a good base as it had access to many goods and services, restaurants and the metro transportation network.
We felt safe and the building had a very new looking elevator which was of great help with our bags.
