The Space

This listing is for the furnished room with two beds known as the TANGO ROOM.

Our adjacent homes house scientists, researchers, writers, engineers, graduate students and summer interns for the telescope community, observatories, university and college of pharmacy. As such, we often host an international mix of residents from many countries.

I often host the same scientists over and over, and they feel this is their home when returning to Hilo. We love making new friends, and the conversation here is never boring.

Oh! And the avocados! If you hit it right, there are amazing butter pear avocados right outside your window. Hence the name "Avocado Room".

  • I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Robin’s place on E Lanikaula.
The atmosphere is friendly, the rooms are clean and well maintained. Fresh fruit is available from plants on the grounds which produce daily.
If you are looking for a comfortable, centrally located place of rest, then look no further.
Thank you Robin, you made me feel right at home during my stay.

  • My stay with Robin was variable. When I first arrived she had many things to do and it was a bit difficult getting things organized. However things didn't improve dramatically especially towards the end. The tango room is mediocre but apparently had I stayed in the other house I would've been better. I'm not quite sure why I was not scheduled there I think it was due to availability. Location was was good and I wound up enjoying my time with the gal that actually lives downstairs in the house in which I stayed.

    Response from Robin:

I'm sorry you did not enjoy your stay with me. That's too bad especially since i thought it did improve perhaps that is a typo?
I now that Mapquest can be confusing and that island directions are a challenge but
I think you are confused tho about where you were, you never set foot in the Tango Room.

  • I immediately felt at home in my spacious, airy room. Everything was provided, and my housemates were delightful. Robin thoughtfully provided morning refreshment during my stay, and although I was out and about most of my visit, it was easy to stay in touch with her at all times. She was very accommodating of my goofy schedule, and her flexibility helped to speed up the decompression/de-stressing aspect of my stay on the island. I look forward to a return to the Big Island and Robin's hospitality in the near future!

    Response from Robin:

Maybe during your next visit we get to spend more time getting acquainted!
I'm glad you enjoyed Hilo, it really has a charm all its own and can be a wonderful place to live. Who knows when you may be back!
    Until next time!

  • Robin was just delightful, so friendly and bubbly. She provided us with coffee, juice and fruit and chatted to us on the second morning (and would have done so on the first had we not had an early start).
The house we stayed in was old but it was big and it's charm grew on us while we were there.
There was plenty of space in the room and lots of windows. Robin was very kind to let us check out late as I was unwell and really appreciated the opportunity to lie down for longer. Later we returned to stay another night when we came back to Hilo. Robin was very responsive and easy to communicate with. She has a lovely nature. Overall staying with Robin was a lovely experience.

  • This property is a piece of old Hilo history. Its a 3 house compound on old sugar plantation land, close to airport and town. We stayed in casual, homey doctors family quarters that Robin graciously upgraded us to as the room we had requested was not quite ready. The house has extensive library, sumptuous bed with beautiful Hawaiian quilt. Foremost, Robin herself! She welcomed us with family and community stories, delivered platter of Belgian waffles, variety of fruit syrup and maple syrups, starfruit, strawberries and bananas. We were grateful to leave our bags at Robin's while we explored Hilo the next moring. Definitely a place to visit and leave time to get to know Robin and her spot.

  • Robin was amazing. She was welcoming the first night that I arrived. And even texted me the next morning about places that are great to get food (<5 minutes away).

    Response from Robin:

Glad you enjoyed your night here - hope you made it home safely!
    See you next time!

  • We only stayed one night to explore Hilo and Mauna Kea. Our room and the house in general were lovely and clean. Robin is a charming and social person. Breakfast was ok. We recommend and would return without hesitation.

  • Our stay at Robin place was very pleasant. The place is beautifull and very warm. The Room was very charming and very clean. The location of the house is not so close to Hilo (15-20 min by feet) but if you have a car it's very convenient. Robin is a very friendly and helpful host. She even bring us to the airport when we needed it. We definitely recommend to stay at Robin place. You will not be disappointed.

  • Robin's property is very comfortable. Quiet, cozy, nice, beautiful. The room in purple color made me calmed down very well. I'm glad the bathroom has a small tab.
