We enjoyed our week in the Berkshires. Unusual setting and contemporary spacious home and very convenient to the Bakery. We had a few questions and issues when we arrived which were dealt with promptly and reasonably. Bee was always pleasant to deal with and available to respond to our requests and questions.
My wife and I stayed here for eight nights with our 7 year old daughter. The interaction with Bee, the owner's daughter-in-law, is wonderful. She is very responsive, and get's back to you in a very timely manner. And she's very interested in your feedback.
Peg, the owner, is terrific! We called her about 30 minutes before our anticipated arrival. She met us with the key and showed us around. Peg lives upstairs and is available if you need her, but otherwise keeps out of your way. If you're staying for the week, she'll also have your laundry done, which is a real nice perk. Peg's a very interesting woman with a great story. There's an article about her and her son, who is the architect, in a magazine on the coffee table. She may be eighty-five, but she has the look and stamina of someone at least ten years younger.
The apartment is just as advertised. The bed was extremely comfortable, and our daughter slept at the foot of our bed on the mattress that was provided. Because the bedroom is large, this didn't present any problem. The bathroom is very large with a stall shower and nice, modern sink. There are plenty of good quality towels.
The kitchen is well appointed, so you can do some serious cooking if you're inclined. We ate most breakfasts there, as well as a couple of dinners. However, there are a number of really good restaurants in the vicinity that should be sampled. Try Martin's in Great Barrington for breakfast and Castle Streeet Cafe for dinner. We also had a nice dinner at Aegean Breeze across from the Price Chopper on Rt. 7. Once Upon A Table in Stockbridge is a special place for dinner. We had one dinner in the courtyard at the Red Lion Inn. The ambiance is really nice, and the service was excellent. The food was good, although not exceptional. There's also a market/breakfast and lunch place in Housatonic. We had a great lunch there, and I'm sure the breakfast are equally good.
The apartment is set back from a main street. We had absolutely no issue with the noise. As mentioned in previous posts, you can hear Peg's footfalls when she's walking around. This never really bothered us, as she's not usually walking around when you're trying to sleep. She does provide a white noise machine, but we never felt the need to use it.
I would definitely recommend this place. It's so comfortable and in a wonderful location.
- Both Bee and Peg are hospitable, responsive, and friendly. Lovely hosts.
- The apartment is airy, bright, modern in a fun way, and extremely well kept. It is as advertised.
- We loved the location. Convenient to Tanglewood/Lenox, center of Great Barrington, Norman Rockwell Museum . . . the best of the Berkshires.
- There is significant road noise, so this is not the place to stay if you want pure quiet.
- You can hear all of the footsteps and activities in the upper part of the house. The host is aware of this and keeps noise to a bare minimum, but again, not an ideal place to stay if you want total serenity.
So sorry you found the Rock Garden less peaceful than you expected. It is located about up a steep hill in the boulders of Monument Mountain about 75 yards from the road so there is some traffic noise when it is so quiet at night. We recommend closing the windows and using the fabulous central air conditioning if you tend to be a light sleeper.
We have tried to be as transparent as possible that this is the downstairs unit in a house with the owner living upstairs. There will be sounds of living as it is not a private, single family home but my mother-in-law's home (who is 85 years old) and goes to bed with the sun. You can be assured there will never be any excessive noise from upstairs! She is very aware to be sensitive to guests below and there is a white noise machine now available for those very sensitive.
We feel our rates are well below market for this area and the quality that we provide. We set them at this low level to offer excellent value for a new one bedroom apartment, including full kitchen facilities. It is very peaceful and private yet very conveniently located to all activities and restaurants. For total serenity, you may need to go much further outside of town.
We thank you for choosing to stay with us and hope you and your family will return. Thanks also for taking the time to post a review.
We enjoyed staying at the Berkshires Rock Garden Apartment. Bee and Peg were helpful and responsive leading up to and during our stay. The apartment was clean and well maintained. We were just minutes away from a wedding and reception that were held in Stockbridge. The only drawback was that on our first evening there, we discovered that the lock to the door of the apartment was broken, and that our key wouldn't work to let us in. Bee pointed out that (unbeknownst to us) the sliding door from the bedroom to outside didn't lock either, so we could just let ourselves in and out through that door. On the 2nd day Peg installed something so that the sliding door could be locked while we were in the apartment, but it still had to be left unlocked during the day while we were out in order for us to gain entry back into the apartment. I realize that the community is safe and many people don't lock their doors in the first place (my friends who were getting married there over the weekend agreed), but it made us uncomfortable, and we wished the situation had been resolved in a different way.
Otherwise, Bee and Peg were friendly, the apartment was nice and we had a good time.
This was our first experience with an AirBnb and we were completely satisfied! From the initial booking with Bee Dietemann to our arrival and meeting Peg, everything went very smoothly. Peg was a wonderful host and very accommodating. The apartment is absolutely gorgeous! Everything is new and very clean. My husband and I stayed there on Memorial Day weekend to see our daughter run in the marathon. Our daughter stayed at an apartment across the street that was wonderful as well! The location is perfect and easily accessible to all the local areas of interest. There was plenty of room to enjoy our family as we sat on the patio, cooked on the grill, or socialized in the living room area. We would definitely love to come back and stay here again! Thank you, Peg!
Beautiful apartment in lovely setting, better than described. Light, open & airy even on a grey Berkshire day. Modern, tasteful design makes this a unique space. Loved all the windows, snowy view to the Housatonic and woods. Details like great lighting, lots of outlets, well-placed hooks, nice linens, comfy bed were much appreciated. The kitchen is really well designed with everything we needed. Nice furniture and lovely artwork. Peg was a welcoming host. Hope to return.
We had a great weekend in the apartment. It was perfect for my wife and 2 kids (8 and 5). It was only 10-15 minutes away from Butternut for skiing. When we got rained/iced in on day 2, we used the comfortable space to make pizza, pasta, and have family game day. Peg, who lives above, was awesome. She let us borrow a pizza pan, called to get the driveway sanded, and gave us local recommendations.
Having stayed at local motels for the same price, this is such a deal and is a true getaway in the woods. I also recommend the quiet places in Housatonic for going out instead of fighting the crowds in Great Barrington.
