About This Listing
Finca Tierra Food Forest & Eco Lodge is a special place for travelers who want to explore sustainable living, connect with nature and eat off the land while on vacation!
Finca Tierra is a permaculture education and demonstration center that opens it doors to guests when courses are not being held. Constructed with jungle farm resources, like bamboo, wood and leaf thatch, the structures and layout of the farm take into account patterns, sun, wind and water. The buildings cool and power themselves as well as harvest all of the water and are surrounded by organic gardens, spring waters and a small river. Ecological Design with a rustic elegant finish!
We are a 30 minute beautiful jungle walk from the beach! The farm is design into areas. Area 1, is the Farm kitchen and two gardens with fruits, edible leaves, veggies, herbs, natural medicine and roots. In this area you can also find four cabins, two campsites, dinning/chill out space and a lounge with hamocks. Area 2 to area 5 includes the nursery, free-range chickens, main crops, the food forest, timber and bamboo, and giant rainforest trees, home for a variety of animals.
Campsites are outfitted with a covered outdoor living area, a large tent with screened ventilation, a comfortable queen size bed, hammocks, lounge chairs, and a solar lantern. Each campsite has a private, modern bathroom with shower, made of bamboo and concrete, and supplied with bio-thermal hot water.
WiFi is available in communal areas.
The kitchen serves three daily farm-to-table meals. Fresh fruits, vegetables, chicken eggs and river prawns are produced just a few feet away from the bamboo kitchen.
Access to beautiful beaches for surfing, for diving, snorkeling and kayaking in a 30 minute walk. If you are coming by car make sure is a 4x4 or you would have to walk the last 300 meters.
The river is a 10 minute walk into the jungle. We also have springs with fresh crystal clean water!
You will have access to our food forest and organic gardens, also communal areas for hanging out with fire and music. The farm kitchen is always open with delicious snacks and tropical fruit juices.
We are located in the jungle surrounded by private rainforest reserve. Tours to the rainforest are also available!
Interaction with Guests
We live onsite, and are always available!
Guests will receive an educational tour of the farm (optional). You are invited to work along side our team and participate in all aspects of farm life and literally, feast on the fruits of your labor! Or, just enjoy a peaceful leisurely time in the jungle being served with delicious healthy fresh meals!
We’re located near Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, a lush Caribbean beach-rimmed jungle community, and are close to the most fabulous beaches in the south Caribbean of Costa Rica! We are so lucky to have other organic farmers in our neighborhood with which we share knowledge, seeds and fun times! Located up in the hills above the beach we have the fresh ocean breeze and fewer bugs!
Surrounded by jungle, you will see a variety of plants, trees and animals like agoutis, sloths, monkeys, armadillos, anteaters, wild cats, toucans, parrots, and crazy looking insects! Every morning you will hear a beautiful concert of all kinds of colorful birds and every night you will sleep with the ocean sound!
There are coffee shops and restaurants, supermarkets, soccer field, a beach club, the animal rescue center, a few hotels and the bus stop in front of the beach on the bottom of our road. Our road is located between two beached, playa Cócles to the left is a popular surfing and socializing beach, to the right is Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva, with coral tide pools, it’s a great spot to swim in calm waters and snorkel.
Parking spaces are available on the property. Bicycles can be rented near the entrance of our road and are a common mode of transport in the area. The public bus stops at the entrance of the road and goes to other local beaches and San Jose. Taxis are also available.

Ana and Ian we great hosts. Very accommodating and gracious. They're property is very beautiful. Definitely for the more experienced nature lover.
Ian and Anna are charming and caring hosts.
Ian has taken the time to explain the hows and the whys of what he has done to create FincaTierra, which is an incredible self sustaining farm. They are very careful to respond to my eating needs as they gave me attractive meals.
They definitely enhanced my trip to Puerto Viejo creating in me a desire to return.
Thank you Ian, thank you Ana,
We had no idea what we were getting into when we linked up w/ Finca Tierra but we were so thankful we did! My wife and I loved our time w/ Ian and his wife Ana in Puerto Viejo. We stayed in their bamboo cabin and were fed some of the best and freshest meals we've ever eaten, seriously. The food was insane. Everyday we went out to the beach to surf and hang out and we'd come home to a fabulous farm fresh dinner. Ian has an incredible wealth of knowledge about sustainable farming and his permaculture farm is very inspiring. Every night eating dinner at their big table w/ Ian and Anna was like going to school. That man is a genius. Make sure and ask lots of questions and have him take you on his farm tour, endless things to talk and learn about. You will leave smarter than when you arrived.
We stayed in their bamboo cabin. We slept on an air mattress under the mosquito net and were woken up in the morning by the howler monkeys (perfect alarm clock). It was more like camping than a hotel experience but it made the trip all the better and more interesting. They have private showers, bathrooms, and a sink 20 feet from the room so it was no big deal it wasn't in the room. There property is about 10 minutes up a dirt/rocky road from Puerto Viejo so when we'd leave for the morning we'd usually stay out for most of the day and than come back to spend the afternoon/evening w/ all the people.
Overall we had a great experience and couldn't be happier w/ our new friends. Think about volunteering or helping out on their farm instead of just beach bumming it like we did. It's a incredible alternative to staying down in the busy town and bustling around w/ the rest of the tourists. Stay in the jungle w/ Ian and Ana at Finca Tierra!

About the Host, Ian
My wife Ana and I run Finca Tierra a small destination lodge and educational farm located in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. When we're on the farm we love cooking, animal watching and beating the midday heat at the river with farm dog Bruce. On the weekends you can find us at the beach fishing, snorkeling or kayaking. We also travel a lot always in search of interesting food, traditional culture, and as a change of pace the hustle and bustle of a big city.
