The Space

It's location, location location! Near the beach, two blocks from the roller coasters, a ten minute walk to downtown or your surf lesson!...This is the rear unit of our home (listed on as Sand Surf and Roller Coasters) It's a small one bedroom apartment, that is the converted rear porch on our 1905 bungalow. It has one little bedroom, tiny living room, minuscule galley kitchen. (stove, full size refrigerator, stocked kitchen) Bathroom with shower. It sits above the ground on a private, locked, rear porch. (alley facing-no view) Yes, we have a table top grill, yes we have an oven. Need to whip up an egg white omelette, blend a green smoothie-no problem! This is not the place you will want to chill for hours on end. This is the place to collapse after conquering THE CRUZ.

You, the perfect renter will arrive with your well worn running shoes, your surf board, SUP or your volleyball. You will love that it's a ten minute stroll to downtown and a mightier 20 minute jog to the really cute strip in Capitola. You are here for the BIG KAHUNA Tri, the Santa Cruz Marathon or the Wharf to Wharf race. IF you want a place to lay your weary head, lock your gear and keep your grub cold then you WANT the SURF SHACK!

The bed is comfy, queen size-memory foam, the sheets are cotton, we have two foam mattress camper style cots for a third person or your two kids if you are a couple. High speed Internet/Wi-Fi and a TV with DVD player...

With the free Friday Night concerts at the Boardwalk(80's Big hair bands) $1 Tuesday rides after 5, Wednesday is movie night at the beach, Bowling, PeeWee Golf and Laser Tag or the Catalyst downtown for live music, are you really going to watch TV?

The bus to UCSC is across the street, the main transit station is a ten minute walk and located downtown. Surf, SUP and kayaking lessons are offered nearby, a five minute walk to the Wharf and Cowell Beach.

The Surf Shack is clean, simple and comfortable. My summers were spent between two lake houses. One grandmother had a 1000 foot, two bedroom cottage with hand me down furniture. We piled up to 14 cousins into the cottage using various cots and beds. The other was a home covered in plastic where we had to shower before entering and never, ever could flop on the couch in a soggy swimsuit. Having five kids of my own, I never wanted to stress over damp bathing suits or sandy feet, that's not what summer is about! Everything is washable and sand doesn't freak us out.

SUMMER 2015-The City of Santa Cruz levies a 11% tax for the privilege of occupying a room or rooms or other living space in a hotel, inn, tourist home or house, motel or other lodging wherein living accommodations for periods less than thirty days are customarily offered for hire. The tax is paid by the occupant and collected by the operator. The operator then remits the tax to the city. The 11% will be added to your reservation and you will be issued a receipt for the tax at the time of your stay. this will add approximately $9.35 a night to your reservation. To offset this I will keep my room rates flat from 2014 and other than the 4th of July there should be no weekend differential.

The $10 surcharge after two people is simply to cover water usuage. As with most of California, Santa Cruz rations water. We wash our linens, beach towels and bath towels onsite and the $10 covers the difference between what we use at a regular rate and what we use at a higher rate because we are over our allotment. If your party number changes, simply leave the difference on the kitchen table, it has worked well for us on the honor system.

  • Everything went really smoothly. I would have liked if the communication was a little more proactive, but otherwise the place is in a great location and is a really good value. We were there during a holiday weekend and I still felt like the it was a great price.

The surf shack is near the beach/boardwalk. It's a very quick walk and we enjoyed the convenience of it. Sydney makes sure that everything is well stocked. The kitchen has everything you would need for making meals during your stay and there's even a little grill on the patio.

It's definitely an awesome little rental and is great for a little beach getaway.

  • Although we did not need to contact Sydney during our stay, she responded to emails prior to our arrival quickly and all went well. Her directions were clear and she left a thoughtful welcome letter. The surf shack is small but it was perfect for my small family. It looked as pictured, cute beachy style.
It is super close to the beach. As others reported, you can hear neighbors but it was not a problem for us.
We had a great time in the shack and hope to return for spring break. Thanks!

  • The surf shack was just the perfect spot to stay in Santa Cruz. It was very clean, spatious and private. The bed was also very comfy. Sydney provided us with all we needed and was a great host overall. The location is also pretty awesome! Highly recommended :)

  • Sydney's Surf Shack was just perfect for us. We arrived late ate night, but that's been no problem at all. The shack itself is big enough for 2 maybe even 3, lovely setup in surfer style. Linen and towels were provided and kitchen has all you need for simple cooking. Even some basics as spices, oil, coffee, cereals, butter were there also charcoal for the outside grill.
Nearby Boadwalk did not bother too much, although it's only 2 blocks away. The shack is not perfect for people searching total quietness as walls are very thin and you might hear your neighbours - depends on who is living next to you and how they behave! WIFI is a little weak sometimes.
After all we will be back if we went to Santa Cruz again. Sydney is very helpful even when she's not in town. Unfortunately we only met twice but we had the impression that she was easy going and relaxed. Wish we could have got to know her and her family better!

  • We had a great time at Santa Cruz and Sydney's apartment. The apartment has great location. Close to everything: Boardwalk, rides, downtown. Sydney arranged apartment very practically you will find there everything you will need: extra beach towels, extra items in the kitchen & bathroom in case you forget something. She takes an extra mile to make her guests feeling comfortable - almost like at home. She is very easy to communicate with and arrange arrival and departure. She even had a bottle of organic vine for us. Thank you Sydney for great experience at Santa Cruz. California is trully beautiful.

  • The surf shack is a great affordable beach accommodation in Santa Cruz. Super convenient if you're in foot as you can walk downtown and to the beach very easily! Really enjoyed my stay here! Plenty I'd towels and the deck and BBQ are extra perks! Sydney even left us a bottle of wine!! Thanks for a great stay in Santa Cruz! Highly recommended!

  • The place is a very cute, cozy and clean 1 bedroom apt towards the back of a much larger house. You can hear thru the walls, but this didn't bother us, maybe because it was family staying there. The patio outdoors is also very nice, though there's not much of a view. Its a little ackward to get to and you have to lock the door at the bottom of the stairs which is kind of weird. Those are the only drawbacks. But i would definitely stay there again. Its a fantastic place for the price and so near the beach! DIdn't get to meet Sydney but the whole process was very easy. Highly recommended!

  • Sydney was prompt with information and easy instructions making the Shack super user friendly. And, it was more than a "shack". It was very cute and the bed was ridiculously comfortable. Thanks, Sydney

  • We came here for Wharf to Wharf. The house is literally a block from the start. I could warm up and then skip the ginormous lines at the porta potties... huge if you are a runner! The house had everything (and more) that we needed... and SO quiet, Zzzzzzz. Will be rebooking for my next race soon.

    Response from Sydney:

So glad the Surf Shack worked for your race start. I'm with you on skipping the porta potties :)

Lucky enough to have lived in France for a few years and traveled extensively throughout Europe. Many of my adventures were with three small children in tow so I'm fairly well versed in all things children and how to vacation with kids successfully. I still have two boys underfoot(11&13) so while we were putting our beach home together I was trying to make it comfortable and functional. I spent many summers in a lakeside cabin in Michigan and never once worried about whether I had sand on my feet as I traipsed through the house. We have a slew of furry friends and while WE DON'T TAKE them to Santa Cruz, not a dog friendly town, we do travel with them. Therefore, I understand folks who schelp their four-legged friends along. To that end most things in my house are washable and we simply ask you to keep your furry friends off the furniture and beds. My idea of a perfect vaction is to be able to walk everywhere, life as a mom requires far too much driving! Our girl in Santa Cruz allows me to stroll to Pacific Avenue(groceries, restaurants and movies) as well as a one block stroll to the sand. In my opinion if I can avoid getting in my car, it's a WIN! Currently I'm outnumbered and live with all guys so my movie habits seem to involve a lot of exploding robots or superheroes. I'm also more apt to be found at the pizza place with the Samurai wielding pizza thrower than I am at the "new place." My youngest is an avid hamburger fan so currently we are eating are way through the Burger Joints. Currently, Betty's Burgers are ranked the highest in Santa Cruz. (one location up the hill and one on Pacific Avenue) Keep in mind the food critic is an 11yo boy-he will agree that the Buttery on Soquel Ave. with their outside picnic tables is still our top ranked destination to eat breakfast or lunch in the Cruz.
