Our home is located in Matapalo, on Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula, considered to be one of the most biologically diverse places on earth. Visitors can expect to see monkeys, toucans, scarlet macaws, hawks, agoutis, and other wildlife without setting foot out of the house! The beach is a one minute stroll away and the waves can be heard from the house.
Although a popular tourist destination, Matapalo is unique to other locations in Costa Rica. The area is "off-grid" and homes are powered by solar energy. Visitors come to enjoy the rainforest, the waves and a slower pace of life.
The house has very few walls and is open to the sights and sounds of the jungle. The spacious main floor has a living area with large comfortable couches, a dining table and fully equipped kitchen, with stove, oven, fridge, and freezer. Screen curtains can be drawn to protect from the rain.
The main floor bathroom is a separate bath house, attached to the central living area by a covered bridge. Completely private, the bath house incorporates an outdoor garden shower and bathtub, as well as toilet and sink.
The upstairs has been designed to take advantage of the beautiful jungle and garden views, but accordion shutters can be shut to enclose the sleeping areas. The master bedroom has a king-size bed with a panoramic view of the jungle canopy. The smaller bedroom has a bunk bed with a double bed on the bottom, and a single on top. All the beds have mosquito nets. There is another bathroom on the second floor.
Come and experience jungle living with all the amenities!
When you start booking accommodations for holiday, you often have a preconceived vision of the property you would like to stay in, where it's located, how it's built, decorated, etc. Usually you meet one of two criterion; rarely are all criteria met in reality. With this house, we hit the jackpot! It couldn't have been more perfect for us! We stayed here for 4 nights with our 3 children (ages 4, 7, 8). The completely open air construction, including shower and bathroom, and the beautiful hardwood floors were the prime attraction. Having no walls truly lets the outdoors in (as we discovered at 5am when the howler monkeys decided to park themselves in the tree just next to the house and start their soliloquies!). There were no shortages of howler, capuchin and spider monkey sightings right in the garden. No walls also made tidying up with a broom remarkably easy (says the mom with 3 kids) and we enjoyed having the random feline or other visitors stop by. This was certainly my favourite of all 5 accommodations in Costa Rica and I would definitely recommend. The only tip I would offer is to stock up on cash as the few local restaurants don't take credit card and the nearest ATM is back in Puerto Jimenez, about 1 hours drive.
Just returned from another great stay at this beautiful house! This was my third year in a row staying here, spending three weeks this time. My girlfriend visited her first time this year, she loved it too.Have been all over Costa Rica earlier, but this is where I want to go back.
A beautiful garden is surrounding the house, with monkeys, toucans, macaws and all kinds of wildlife on the doorstep all the time. The open style house makes this really enjoyable. It is also just a 2 minute walk down to the most beautiful beach where we have spotted whales every day.
The house has everything you need with solar powered lightning, heated water, a well equipped kitchen, with fridge, gas stove, etc. Very nice outdoor shower/ bathroom. Everything is nice and clean, and a maid is cleaning once a week or more often on request.
This place and the house is highly recommended. We are going back:)
